Do We Have Enough Bibles Yet? English Bible Translations And The Transitions Through Time, Allison C. Stephan
Do We Have Enough Bibles Yet? English Bible Translations And The Transitions Through Time, Allison C. Stephan
Selected Honors Theses
The Bible is read in a variety of contexts, but with the hundreds of translations in English and controversy over which is “most accurate” or “best,” this thesis examines a brief history of Bible translation, a few translation theories such as formal and functional equivalence, what to look for in a Bible translation, and some of the most common English Bible translations. A study was conducted with college students, focusing primarily on the purpose of each translation and the people who read a specified version. Finally, this thesis supports the usage of different translations in different contexts, according to the …
Humanity's Unlikely Heroine: Examining Eve In John Milton's 'Paradise Lost' And "Paradise Regained", Alyssa V. White
Humanity's Unlikely Heroine: Examining Eve In John Milton's 'Paradise Lost' And "Paradise Regained", Alyssa V. White
The Criterion
This essay explores the biblical world of John Milton’s poetry through the eyes of the only woman given dialogue in his most famous works, Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained. Eve has often been read with scrutiny and judgment, with many readers and scholars dismissing her character as weak and uninteresting. The paper draws on sources from several scholars, but it works primarily with the actual text of Milton’s epics themselves. The argument of this paper seeks to counter those beliefs and provide a thorough analysis of Eve’s character and development throughout Paradise Lost, as well as her impact on the …
Ancestral Queerness: Normativity And Deviance In The Abraham And Sarah Narratives, Gil Rosenberg
Ancestral Queerness: Normativity And Deviance In The Abraham And Sarah Narratives, Gil Rosenberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Interpreters of the Abraham and Sarah narratives in Gen 11-21 often focus on the importance of the line of inheritance, through a particular biological child. While they also note the many irregularities in Abraham and Sarah's familial relationships and activities, there has been no sustained attention to the combination of deviance and normativity that characterizes these narratives. I argue that, due to their particular combinations of normativity and deviance, Abraham and Sarah are Queer, where Queer is a general, cross-cultural category which includes but is not limited to contemporary forms of queerness (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, etc.).

Le Détective Biblique: Daniel, "Le Festin De Balthazar" Ou Une Histoire Souterraine Du Roman Policier, Rebecca Josephy
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

“Landscapes Of Seduction: Terry Tempest Williams’S Desert Quartet And The Biblical Song Of Songs”, Boyd J. Petersen
“Landscapes Of Seduction: Terry Tempest Williams’S Desert Quartet And The Biblical Song Of Songs”, Boyd J. Petersen
Boyd J Petersen
Like the Song of Songs, Terry Tempest Williams's Desert Quartet submerges its reader in a highly erotic landscape. And both use that landscape—a garden in the Song and a desert in Desert Quartet—to create eros in the text. Yet while the Song of Songs uses metaphor to transform the body of the beloved into a garden of delights, Desert Quartet uses personification to transform the desert landscape into a passionate lover. In the Song of Songs, the body becomes the landscape where seduction takes place; in Desert Quartet, the landscape becomes the body which seduces. Both works also invite allegorical …
The Unreliable Narrator Of Job, James W. Watts
The Unreliable Narrator Of Job, James W. Watts
Religion - All Scholarship
This essay by James W. Watts provides analysis on the book of Job, questioning previous interpretations of its narrative. Watts also compares the book of Job's narrative style to that of modern and historical authors. Watts argues that the author of the book of Job employed an unreliable narrator in the form of an omniscient charatcer, which attacked literative conventions of the time, but ultimately proved difficult for readers to understand.
Metaphors And Similes For Yahweh In Hosea 14:2-9 (1-8) : A Study Of Hoseanic Pictorial Language, Bernhard Oestreich
Metaphors And Similes For Yahweh In Hosea 14:2-9 (1-8) : A Study Of Hoseanic Pictorial Language, Bernhard Oestreich
Dissertations
Problem.
Compared with the effort to interpret other parts of the book of Hosea, especially the first three chapters, the final chapter has been rather neglected. Additionally, the variety of explanations offered for certain biblical images in Hos 14 indicates a necessity to clarify the methods of interpretation of biblical metaphorical language.
Method.
Chapter 1 clarifies the theory of metaphors on which the study is based.
Chapter 2 determines the limitation and the structure of the passage Hos 2:2-9 (Eng. 1-8). In chapters 3 to 6 the metaphors and similes of this passage which refer to Yahweh, i.e., "healing," "loving," …
