"One Soul Shall Not Be Lost": The War In Heaven In Mormon Thought, Boyd J. Petersen

In this essay I look at the war in heaven from five different angles. First, I examine the historical antecedents of the war in heaven, its origins and evolution of the narrative in Western religious traditions. Second, I explore the development of the narrative in Mormon thought and its literal level of interpretation. Third, I discuss ways Mormon use the war in heaven to convey a moral message. Fourth, I examine in some detail the ways Mormons employ the narrative as an allegory to explain current events, illustrating the Mormon worldview engaging in increasing conflicts about agency. First, Villier's L'Eve future employs a poetics of confusion, calling into question binary oppositions and destabilizing the narrative. Second, the novel is concerned with the production of art in a technological age, calling into question the notion of an "original" in a world of technological reproduction. Third, the novel is concerned with the ethics of male desire and the construction of women's bodies. Finally, the text critiques the emerging scientific worldview as an alternate religion, requiring faith, administering sacraments, and officiating rituals.

Like the Song of Songs, Terry Tempest Williams's Desert Quartet submerges its reader in a highly erotic landscape. And both use that landscape—a garden in the Song and a desert in Desert Quartet—to create eros in the text. Yet while the Song of Songs uses metaphor to transform the body of the beloved into a garden of delights, Desert Quartet uses personification to transform the desert landscape into a passionate lover. In the Song of Songs, the body becomes the landscape where seduction takes place; in Desert Quartet, the landscape becomes the body which seduces. Both works also invite allegorical …
