Translating Heimat In Multilingual Dortmund, Kristin Dickinson

Named for the people of 132 different nationalities photojournalist Peyman Azhari encountered in northern Dortmund over the course of a year, the photo collection Heimat 132 (2014) stands as testament to the many ethnicities, religions, and languages this neighborhood is home to. In my paper, I read Azhari’s photographs as sites of translation capable of reclaiming a critical understanding of Heimat (home or homeland) that is fundamentally multilingual. I do so by first exploring the link between racially and ethnically exclusionary definitions of Heimat and the all-too-common assertion that Heimat is an untranslatable word. In her article, “A Tree as a Record: On Translating Mahagony by Edouard Glissant,” translator Betsy Wing recounts how Martinican writer Edouard Glissant expressed his disinclination to respond to translators’ questions and justified his intention by saying, “I wrote it once, now it’s your turn to write it” (124). According to Glissant, translating and writing are similar in nature. The art of translation therefore does not lie in the process of translating words into another language but in the skill to compose a text anew, that is to say to develop unique ways of ‘writing’ and therefore to deconstruct the …

“Since When Is Steve Urkel White?” – Vocal Blackface In The German Dubbing Landscape, Patrick Ploschnitzki

Dubbed (i.e., lip-synchronized audiovisual translation of) movies and television are ubiquitous in German-speaking countries and often consumed without active reflection of their production. Due to this inattention, the domestication / replacement of cultural references in US media translated into German often goes unnoticed. Translational decision-making becomes highly problematic, however, when entire cultures are replaced or disregarded as a result. In 2004, applied linguist Robin Queen demonstrated that Black actors were dubbed by white voice actors with German dialects and sociolects traditionally read as “blue collar.” There has not been any follow-up research to her crucial contribution that remains topical: the …

Feeling Beyond Words: Ineffability And Haptic Translational Praxis Of Black German Writings, Adrienne N. Merritt

In this article, I focus on selections from Black German essayistic and creative writings that center experiential knowledge that is personal and often multisensory. My case studies are excerpts from Farbe bekennen: Afro-deutsche Frauen auf den Spuren ihrer Geschichte (1986), its English translation by Anne V. Adams (Showing Our Colors 1992), and Natasha Kelly’s collection of interviews from her documentary film, Millis Erwachen (Milli’s Awakening) (2018), which Kelly herself translated. These texts, I argue, explore the ways in which words fail to fully express the visceral reaction of living while Black in Germany, particularly those that seek …

This article compares Agnès Agboton’s memoirs Más allá del mar de arena: Una mujer africana en España (‘Beyond the Sea of Sand: An African Woman in Spain,’ 2005) to Najat El Hachmi’s novel, La filla estrangera (‘The Foreign Daughter,’ 2015) to illustrate how these seemingly dissimilar works serve to make space for their author’s first languages in peninsular letters. Applying Rebecca Walkowitz’s conception of born-translated literature to the case of these Spanish and Catalan texts, it argues that the migratory tales of these two women writers constitute a contribution to the Global Hispanaphone. This article demonstrates how literary walks can evoke myth in a meaningful way for contemporary life. In particular, through a close reading of Esther Kinsky’s Am Fluß [River], I argue that the landscape experienced on foot can articulate and give access to the transcendent component of myth. I begin with a survey of how magic and transcendent experience is configured in related literary forms (namely new nature writing, the post-secular, new materialism, and the literature of re-enchantment) but remains bound by material reality. I then define the meaning and function of myth in relation to contemporary literature. These …

Going back to previous modes of travel, such as walking or sailing, to ensure a future, is currently being engaged by everyone from ambling environmentalists to scientists and technologists. In Germany and in Sweden, scientists are working to develop large cargo sailing ships. These ships of the future hearken back to the past of ocean voyaging. They dovetail with contemporary literary reflections on ocean voyaging and slow travels, such as Judith Schalansky’s Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Never Set Foot On and Never Will (2009). This article compares a selection of recent German literary representations of cycling in the context of contemporary discourses of slow travel, with a particular focus on themes of happiness and emotional authenticity. Dismissal of the pastoral as naïve and hostile to progress echoes the critiques which Bruno Latour, in We Have Never Been Modern, makes of what he calls the “antimodern” sensibility. Rather than advocating for an abandonment of the past, however, Latour puts forth a position he calls “nonmodern,” one that allows for recognition of the value of the past and of the natural without idolizing it, that does not demand the forward motion of the modern impulse. Reframing Jewish Forms Of Speaking To God: The Use Of Apostrophe In David Rosenmann-Taub’S Cortejo Y Epinicio, Raelene C. Wyse

In his first published collection of poetry, Cortejo y epinicio (‘Cortege and Epinicion,’ 1949), Chilean author David Rosenmann-Taub (1927) depicts speakers experiencing crises of faith. They question what God is and what it means to believe, as they seek out pagan, earthly, Christian, and Jewish forms of relating to the divine. My analysis foregrounds the distinct presence of Jewishness in Cortejo y epinicio to analyze how Rosenmann-Taub represents cross-cultural spaces, heterogeneity, and heterodoxy as part of Chilean poetry and culture. “The poem fell like a shell into a munitions depot”: with these words Stefan Zweig recalled the impact made by Ernst Lissauer’s Anglophobic poem “Haßgesang gegen England” (A Chant of Hate Against England) upon first publication in August 1914. The poem’s success derived from the rhetorical power with which it encapsulated a national emotional response to the outbreak of war. In Germany it initiated an outpouring of Anglophobic verse, but lost favor as it became clear that the patriotism it epitomized would not carry the Central Powers to a swift victory. Soldier-Poet Or Écrivain-Combattant: How The French Trenches Of World War I Defined Witnessing, Nichole T. Gleisner

This paper explores how the French trenches of WWI defined the act of witnessing. An examination of Third Republic grammar textbooks by Claude Augé shows how soldiers were predisposed to be receptive to trench newspapers' exhortations to become witnesses to the war experience. An analysis of these pedagogic reforms, paired with a close reading of trench newspapers, show why the broader term écrivain-combattant emerged in France, as opposed to soldier-poet in the British literary context.
