In this thesis I have endeavored to compile in one paper as complete a history o,f the Mask and Makeup as was practical in a shorter treatise. The material contained in the following pages has been drawn from many and scattered sources. Kenneth MacGown's book, Masks and Demons, has proved an invaluable source, and I am indebted to him for much of the material concerning the source and history of the Mask.
