Bowl Names And Sponsors: Silliness Abounds, Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1995

Bowl Names And Sponsors: Silliness Abounds, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Once again the Gray was out maned. Then came the Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl in which Aloha meant goodbye in any number of ways, and the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl, which asks the question what is a weiser lock and why would you want to lock weisers anyway?

In Memoriam: Sergei Grinkov, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1995

In Memoriam: Sergei Grinkov, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

These words of poet John Williams in "The Skaters" came to mind while contemplating the loss of beauty in the world that will result from the death of Sergei Grinkov. At age 28 his death came as a shock not only to those closest too him, but to anyone who has ever watched him and his skating partner perform their routines to near perfection. His partner, Yekaterina Gordeeva was with him on the ice at Lake Placid when he collapsed and died during a practice session some ten days ago.

Rich Devoss And The Girls - Orlando Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Last week Larry Guest reported on the reluctance of the Orlando Magic to share this city with any other major league professional sports franchise. In the course of his column Guest quoted Magic owner Rich DeVoss as saying about his conversations with County Chairman Linda Chapin and Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood: "I talked to the girls and asked them how many sports dollars are there to go around in Orlando."

Sport As Business - The Nomadic Franchies Of The Nfl, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1995

Sport As Business - The Nomadic Franchies Of The Nfl, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the last several years I have had a running disagreement with a colleague over whether sport is simply a business or if it means something beyond the bottom line. Is there, or was there ever any sentiment in sport? The recent developments involving Cleveland and Baltimore raise these questions once again.
