An Analysis Of Early Woodland Pottery From Southwest Michigan, James W. Cogswell

Significant amounts of Early Woodland pottery have been recovered from excavations in southwest Michigan. Radiocarbon and thermoluminescence assays date this pottery from 590 B.C. to A.D. 10. This pottery is analyzed in great detail, providing evidence for attributes heretofore unreported in the Great Lakes area. Selected vessel attributes are presented in a chronological framework, and potential trends in the regional development of Early Woodland pottery are discussed.

Landscape And Change In Three Novels By Theodor Fontane, Jane Ellen Speerstra

This thesis traces and explicates the changes in Theodor Fontane's landscape depiction in the years 1887- 1892. I examine his novels Cecile (1887), Irrungen, Wirrungen (1888), and unwiederbringlich (1892). I show that Fontane, as though discarding a relic of the Romantic past, used increasingly less landscape in his narratives. He focused on the actions and conversation of his characters, and on their immediate surroundings. When these surroundings were urban, they tended to disappear. The progressive minimalization of landscape, and of cityscape in particular, foreshadowed the appearance in German literature of twentieth-century man: man alienated from nature in cities, and less …

This thesis attempts to elucidate the concepts of death and the netherworld found within Sumerian and Semitic literary texts. This particular topic has received very little attention in the past but studies of a similar nature have tended to take a fairly general approach dealing with Mesopotamian concepts in their entirety. Sumerian and Semitic cultures have not been distinguished due to the large number of similarities which were seen to exist between their societies, cultures, and religious ideas. This thesis explores eye symbolism within the context of the art forms of the Ancient Near East, including pottery, sculpture, idols of amulets, seals, cuneiform texts and the literature of the Old Testament. The central concern in this study is to bring together under one cover the iconography of the eye and its meaning from the cultures of Mesopotamia and Israel. The human eye has been a symbol for good or evil from earliest times. This thesis provides a data base of the sites in Israel at which stamped Greek amphora handles have been found and an index of the Greek names used in the stamps. The index is intended to be a guide only, to point out the publications which should be examined for more detailed information. The thesis illustrates the use of the data base and index to prepare catalogues of stamped amphora handles by supplementing published listings of stamped handles from Caesara Maritima that were never previously published.
