In the sparkling first chapter of Louis de Bernieres's Corelli's Mandolin, the world of Homer's Odysseus is explicitly invoked. This is hardly surprising in a historical novel which will detail the Italian occupation of the Greek island of Cephallonia, near neighbor of Odysseus's Ithaca, during World War II. What is less immediately apparent is that the novel contains a further pattern of inexplicit allusion to the Odyssey, along with a pervasive theme of nostos. Emphasis on "homecoming" helps create the novel's ardent encomium to the Greek homeland that inspires such fierce love of place in its people and promises them …

CHARLES FRAZIER HAS CAREFULLY SITUATED HIS NOVEL ABOUT AN American Civil War deserter within Greek and Latin classical literary traditions. Since its publication, Cold Mountain has all but universally been hailed as an “odyssey” by readers, critics, and scholars, in recognition of its structure as an adventure-laden homeward journey, with the end goal of reuniting two lovers; it is rich with Homeric allusions (even to the point of quotation) and typologies of both character and scene (Chitwood; McDermott, “Frazier Polymêtis.”; Vandiver). In undertaking the publication of the Hellenistic pottery from Corinth, G. Roger Edwards did for Corinth what Homer Thompson had done for the Athenian Agora. Both scholars studied an unattractive body of material from an unfashionable period and made it accessible to a wider audience. In doing so their chronological framework influenced modern scholarship far beyond the archaeology of Hellenistic Corinth and Athens, indeed to every region receiving mainland Greek ceramic imports or imitating them. As a result, most publications on Hellenistic material culture subsequent to Edwards’ Corinth VII.iii refer to it for stylistic parallels and dates. Even new studies …

This paper discusses a recent study to test the effectiveness of combining 3D virtual worlds (VWs) with Problem Based Learning (PBL) in archaeological education of undergraduate college students at two American universities. The testbed used was a virtual world of Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli (Italy), a World Heritage Site dating to the reign of Hadrian (117-138 CE). At both universities courses were offered on the villa using a PBL approach in such a way that the relative strengths and weaknesses of learning based on face-to-face, 2D, and VW presentations could be assessed. We decided to address the issue of incorporating archaeology and material culture into classes devoted to Latin literature last spring, while Patrick was teaching Latin and Lynne was teaching Roman Civilization. Both of us were confronted with the danger of losing the interest of students who once had a burning desire to learn about the ancient world. Our aim is to offer up some suggestions for ways that, through collaboration between specialists in philology, history, and archaeology, we can keep the Classical world dynamic and relevant.

This article outlines the application of problem-based learning, or PBL, to a freshman-level course in Aegean prehistory. The project described demonstrates how PBL can be used to tap into college-level students’ natural curiosity about the ancient world while training them to use practical, broadly applicable writing and research skills.

Superficial similarities between the Sauron of Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings and the Dracula of Bram Stoker's Dracula will strike anyone who reads both works. But the relationship between the two chief antagonists goes far beyond the superficial. Sauron and Dracula are tyrant-monsters of similar motives and powers. Both are counter-creators of a mode of existence associated with the powers of darkness which is parasitical on the natural life of creation and at active war with it, called not "living" but "Un-Dead" (spelled "undead" in Tolkien, III 116) in both. In the center of his long narrative, The Metamorphoses, (translated by Robert Graves under the title The Golden Ass) and composing a large part of the story, Apuleius inserts the tale of "Cupid and Psyche." Like most of the tales interwoven into the narrative, it had been popular before his time, and many parallel tales exist in the folklore of widely separated cultures. The most famous modem version is the French tale, "Beauty and the Beast" which inspires popular artists to this day.
