Business As A Mission; Business As A Calling (Long Version), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

Speaking at InterVarsity's Open for Business Conference in St. Louis, MO, Pollard describes vocation as fulfilling whatever call God has placed on our lives. By drawing upon his own story as a Christian businessman, he shows how such a fulfillment requires the implementation of servant leadership.

Northrop Frye And The Phenomenology Of Myth, Glen Robert Gill Dec 2006

Northrop Frye And The Phenomenology Of Myth, Glen Robert Gill

Department of Classics and General Humanities Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In Northrop Frye and the Phenomenology of Myth, Glen Robert Gill compares Frye's theories about myth to those of three other major twentieth-century mythologists: C.G. Jung, Joseph Campbell, and Mircea Eliade. Gill explores the theories of these respective thinkers as they relate to Frye's discussions of the phenomenological nature of myth, as well as its religious, literary, and psychological significance.

Gill substantiates Frye's work as both more radical and more tenable than that of his three contemporaries. Eliade's writings are shown to have a metaphysical basis that abrogates an understanding of myth as truly phenomenological, while Jung's theory of …

The Gospels And The Reader, Sandra Marie Schneiders Dec 2006

The Gospels And The Reader, Sandra Marie Schneiders

Jesuit School of Theology

From at least the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century the prevailing understanding of history and of texts and their meaning was almost exclusively object-centred. The reader of the text seldom came into view, and if she or he did, the exegesis was suspect. History was understood as a free-standing state of affairs which existed 'in the past' independently of the reader. Texts were free-standing semantic containers in which a single, stable meaning was intentionally embedded by the author. The meaning in the biblical texts was presumed to be primarily information about history. Thus, the task of the biblical scholar was …

L'Islam En Termes Chrétiens : Quand L’Aventure Ambiguë « Croise » Pascal Et Saint Augustin, Mbaye Diouf

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

If it is recognized that The Ambiguous Adventure is one of Africa’s most studied texts, it should also be noted that most analyses of Cheikh Hamidou Kane’s novel are general sociological commentaries on a mythologized Africa or on a society that is caught in the snares of its own mythic “values.” These commentaries often forget that the text is also the passage through a history that was imposed on Africa, and one which the writer tries to interpret in his own way. If Kane’s text plunges into the Christian faith by invoking Pascal and Augustine, it is in order to …

Pro Rege

"This piece was published in the Sioux County Index-Reporter in mid-September 2006. The soldier mentioned in the article was from the area, and his body was being brought home via a convoy through towns along Highway 18. I happened to be covering a volleyball game in the town where he grew up and went to high school, so emotion was high at the four-way stop where I was standing. It struck me that we often dispense such generalities as “He died so that we can stand here” without really thinking—and this is the column that emerged."

Texts And Traditions: The Consequences Of Humanist New Testament Scholarship For The Reformation, Laura Rickelman Nov 2006

Texts And Traditions: The Consequences Of Humanist New Testament Scholarship For The Reformation, Laura Rickelman

Senior Honors Theses

Martin Luther's Reformation of Christianity was preceded by a conceptual reform of New Testament studies arising from the Renaissance scorn for medieval perceptions. The Reformation was thrust into a volatile academic area of conflicting humanist and scholastic methods of biblical interpretation. Lorenzo Valla and Desiderius Erasmus applied advanced methods of linguistic, historical, and literary criticism to the translation and emendation of the New Testament. The debate over authority for textual meaning held particular applicability for disregarding the authority of tradition in interpreting scripture. The humanist view of scripture was adopted by and consequently associated with the Reformation, although the conflicting …
