A Discipleship Model For Oral Preference Learners: Specifically Related To The Turkana People Of Kenya, Theresa Lynn Pottenger

Doctor of Ministry

The Turkana people of Kenya are primarily oral learners, processing information in oral ways. Oral learners are completely reliant on what they hear, see, and experience because they cannot or choose not to read.1 Missionaries from highly literate western cultures unwittingly burdened these oral learners with literacy dependent teaching methods and discipleship practices. This has particularly left Turkana Christian leaders with few options for deepening their own Christian spirituality or leading others in discipleship. Additionally, a cultural disconnect between western spiritual categories taught by the missionaries and Turkana spiritual categories have left several Turkana spiritual needs unmet. The Turkana …

Supporters and detractors alike rely on anecdotal evidence to support their claims. Many in the academic community have dismissed camp as theologically shallow or mere fun and games, while others have praised it as a form of ministry proven to facilitate life-changing experiences. Much of the confusion comes from conflating very different models of camping ministry, though most is the result of a simple dearth of scholarly research.

This project takes a close look at the rich history …

Downey Avenue Christian Church was searching for a method to train teachers not only for the church school but also for the home. This Kit seemed to be the device needed.

The problem: How may the Kit be used to challenge each person to teach wherever he has opportunity? To teach is easy but to teach in a manner that the person will grow toward Christ is difficult.

More specifically, the aim is to examine the present-day emphases that are to be found in the curricula of Christian education and to offer suggestions for the blending of these emphases that will add to the force and effectiveness of the great job already being done in this area of Christian education.
