Portent And Providence- An Investigation Of The Puritan Habit Of Deciphering The Will Of God In The Natural And The Preternatural With Special Reference To "The Scarlet Letter" By Nathaniel Hawthorne, Milton Sernett
Master of Divinity Thesis
This paper has something to do with both Puritan history and Nathaniel Hawthorne. As originally conceived it was entitled The Puritan Prolapsis: A Study in the Conception and Collapse of the "Holy Commonwealth," with Special Reference to the Interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was to have been an attempt to isolate the basis, both experiential and theological, for the "Holy Commonwealth" and to determine what undermined the colony, especially as to the tension between the individual and the society in New England. However, after a good deal of research, it was found that such a problem would force a consideration …
History Of Richmond Baptists, 1780-1860, Roland Stuart Carlton
History Of Richmond Baptists, 1780-1860, Roland Stuart Carlton
Master's Theses
Organized Baptist work began in Richmond in June, 1780. Several families belonging to the Boar Swamp Baptist Church in Henrico County had moved into the Richmond area. The distance, the road conditions, and the modes of travel made it difficult for these people to worship regularly at their church. Their pastor, Joshua Morris, also realized their problem, During the month of June, 1780, he met with these folks at the home of Mr. John Franklin, located on the northeast corner of Carrington and Pink Streets in the east end of Richmond. There were fourteen in attendance. Together they had prayer …
Holistic Evangelism As An Approach To Navaho Peyotism, Gary H. Harding
Holistic Evangelism As An Approach To Navaho Peyotism, Gary H. Harding
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Seventh-day Adventist evangelism has attempted to treat the whole man--physically, mentally, spiritually. Because the desired results of evangelism have been less than ideal in many areas of the world, a review of the basic concepts of Seventh-day Adventism (epitomized in the writings of Ellen G. White, whom Seventh-day Adventists consider to have written under inspiration) was made.
This review has tried to clarify the emphasis placed on the necessity of a complete gospel approach to meet the physical, intellectual and social needs of man as well as the religious. Sin is seen to be a loss of the wholeness that …

THE PROBLEM UNDER CONSIDERATION
"Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy... but the seventh day is a sabbath unto Jehovah thy God .... " (Ex. 20;8, 1 Oa). "Ye observe days, and months, and seasons, and years. I am afraid of you, lest by any means I have bestowed labor upon you in vain" (Gal. 4:10,11).
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The problem seen. Above are given two Scripture passages, one from the Old Testament and the other from the New Testament. The former is part of a command to observe a day, "to keep it holy," while the latter …
An Analysis Of Music In The Bible, Dennis Bert Hagen
An Analysis Of Music In The Bible, Dennis Bert Hagen
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
Music of antiquity has been found to be of interest only to the historians and musicologists who make their living by dissecting the labyrinth of ancient word references and pictures. Due to it's age, the music of the Bible has been a part of this maze. Though there have possibly been more commentaries written upon the text of Biblical wit than on any other book, few have enlightened their readers With a discussion of the specific musical practices of the ancient Hebrews and early Christians. This parsimony of the biblical. schol.ar over his primary concerns in theology has left a …

The Syrian Church In India, A. John George
The Syrian Church In India, A. John George
Graduate Thesis Collection
This thesis is specially concerned with the section of the Church now called Mar Thoma Syrian Church; it has therefore to leave out of consideration the various groups which live apart from that section, once the occasions of separation have been noticed. Thus we shall see that the Syrian Church has a loose-knit unity until 1653; for the last fifty years that period under Roman Control. Then about half of the Christians became Jacobite in allegiance. The work of the Christian Missionary Society, missionaries in the nineteenth century, led the coversion of a few families to the Anglican faith and …

A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall
A Study Of The Sin And Death Of Moses In Biblical Literature, Harry E. Woodall
OBU Graduate Theses
Recently Dr. Clyde T. Francisco, who is professor of Old Testament interpretation at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, suggested that one of the great mysteries of the Bible is contained in the sin and death of Moses. Inquiry into the subject has validated his statement, for the interpretation of Moses' sin and death has been subject to many theories and speculations. The following Biblical passages are concerned with the sin and death of Moses: Numbers 20:1-13; 22-29; 27:12-14; Deuteronomy 1:35-40; 3:23-29; 4:21-24; 32:48-52; 34:1-7. Other related Biblical passages include Psalm 106:32-33, ·Mark 9:2-13 and synoptic parallels including Matthew 17: 1-13 and …

The Concept Of Spirit As Related To The Knowledge Of God In The Thought Of Paul Tillich And Nicholas Berdyaev, Wilbur W. Brannon
OBU Graduate Theses
The problem of knowing God has not been solely a twentieth century phenomenon, but the current "death of God" theology has brought the problem into focus within the Christian community in terms of secular involvement. A "Christian agnosticism" has emerged from within the Church criticizing archaic ecclesiastical structures and confessions. Those criticisms have been leveled by radical theologians, represented by Altizer, Hamilton, and Van Buren, who have denied for humanity a living God and consequently a knowledge of God.
Modern man has suffered the loss of life's meaning and its supportive Reality. "God", therefore, has become a term without meaningful …
