Passing The Torch, Reta Halteman Finger
Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies Educator Scholarship
In the early 1970s, a group of six evangelical women in Chicago began meeting. Their topic of conversation? The emerging secular movement of feminism and what it might mean in a Christian context. These discussions would eventually lead to the Daughters of Sarah, a mid-20th century American journal for the particular audience of Christian feminists. Daughters of Sarah published some of the earliest religious scholarship on the topic.
The Metaphysical & Epistemological Theories Of C.S. Lewis, Richard Ryals
The Metaphysical & Epistemological Theories Of C.S. Lewis, Richard Ryals
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
C. S. Lewis is very concerned about the naturalist assumptions which underlie much of modern knowledge. He attempts to show that the naturalist philosophy, when taken to its logical conclusion, undermines the validity of our reasoning processes and our moral judgments. He then attempts to offer an alternative philosophy which can serve as an adequate basis for our reasoning and ethics.
Lewis sees three basic metaphysical possibilities: naturalism, dualism, and theism. Naturalism views the natural process as the ultimate reality. Everything that exists is either a part of or a product of this process. Dualism asserts that there are two …

A Concern For A World Gathering Of Young Friends, Paul Anderson
A Concern For A World Gathering Of Young Friends, Paul Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The Spirit of God moves within the chapters of time, uniting the inward seasons of the soul with the outward measures of calendar time. After much prayer and deliberation, it is the feeling of many that the time is right for a world gathering of young Friends. A world gathering of any sort is a gigantic undertaking! The expenses in terms of travel, time, and coordinative efforts are immense. However, in light of the values of such a gathering, the expenses seem minimal. The following are but a few values that could result from such a gathering.

Search For Nothing: The Life Of St. John Of The Cross By Richard P. Hardy, Philip Novak
Search For Nothing: The Life Of St. John Of The Cross By Richard P. Hardy, Philip Novak
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
"A new biography of such a seminal figure could hardly be anything but welcome. Yet I can only recommend Hardy's book with reservations. Though written lovingly by a professor of spirituality who seems to share John of the Cross' contemplative sensibilities, and who, moreover, has done his homework, the book remains curiously one-dimensional. In a word it lacks, depth." ~ from the article

On Gems And Ashes, Paul Anderson
On Gems And Ashes, Paul Anderson
Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology
The quality of a person's life is determined less by the circumstances at hand than by the way one responds to those circumstances. Following Christ does not mean that one's lot in life will be more pleasant or opportune. It does mean that within the course of following Christ events take on a different perspective. We are able to respond to them in light of God's presence and purpose behind and beyond those events.
The Dynamics Of The Will In Buddhist And Christian Practice, Philip Novak
The Dynamics Of The Will In Buddhist And Christian Practice, Philip Novak
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
"The task of this paper is to suggest that the will-dynamics educed by Buddhist and Christian contemplative paths share fundamental structural similarities, a hypothesis which, if true, lends support to the notion of a psychologia perennis. The contemplative dimensions of Buddhism and Christianity, we will suggest, possess formally similar strategies for the attunement of the human will to its source in the Real, and attunement and dynamic balance in which both Buddhist and Christian contemplatives discover the salvation they seek." ~ from the article
