Response: Are American Christians Persecuted?, Susan L. Trollinger
Response: Are American Christians Persecuted?, Susan L. Trollinger
English Faculty Publications
With an eye toward reuniting the church and the academy, this book focuses on the role that scholarship can play in making good preachers into really great preachers. This is the bridge between scholarly and popular writing that informs the sermon and makes it more powerful and meaningful for the people who regularly listen to sermons. Preachers are challenged to raise the level of their commitment to scholarship as well as overcome any pre-existing prejudices with scholarship. The preacher as scholar is the perfect way for the pulpit to respond to the challenges of a secular, post-modern world that often …

The Theology Of Reparation To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, Arthur Burton Calkins
The Theology Of Reparation To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, Arthur Burton Calkins
Marian Studies
The Theology of Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a topic barely considered in modern theology, but strongly brought to the fore in the apparitions at Fatima and the subsequent apparitions to Sister Lúcia, the last surviving seer of Fatima and other mystics. The analogy or “likeness in difference” between the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the consecration to their Hearts, the Heart of the God-man and the Heart of the most perfect creature, is primary. In “Miserentissimus Redemptor,” Pius XI taught that just as in his agony Jesus not only …

Emergence And Development Of The Two Hearts Alliance, Lawrence Scrivani
Emergence And Development Of The Two Hearts Alliance, Lawrence Scrivani
Marian Studies
During the 1980s and 1990s the term “Two Hearts Alliance” appeared suddenly in certain Catholic circles without obvious antecedents. It inspired a popular movement for a time, even though Mariologists were unfamiliar with it. Investigation reveals that it can be traced to a phrase used by John Paul II in 1985, “the admirable alliance of the Hearts of Jesus and Mary.” Beginning at Fatima in 1986 and continuing to Rome in 1997, several symposia examined its roots and implications. It was said to have roots in the notion of Mary as the Associate (socia) of Christ, a notion reaching back …
Theological Foundations For Eucharistic Reparation To The Heart Of Jesus Through The Heart Of Mary In The Context Of Messages Given To St. Margaret Mary And At Fatima, Dwight P. Campbell
Theological Foundations For Eucharistic Reparation To The Heart Of Jesus Through The Heart Of Mary In The Context Of Messages Given To St. Margaret Mary And At Fatima, Dwight P. Campbell
Marian Studies
The private revelations associated with Fatima, Portugal, beginning with the messages of the Angel to the children in 1916, and then by Our Lady beginning in May of 1917, focus on making reparation for sins and for the conversion of sinners through prayer and penance. Notably, the messages specifically request reparation for sins which offend the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and link this reparation to the Holy Eucharist—and, by implication, to Christ’s Heart present therein. The Fatima revelations follow upon and complement those communicated by Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque at Paray-le-Monial in the 1670s, in which Jesus …

‘By Mary’S Heart We Love The Heart Of Jesus’: The Teachings Of St. Louis M. De Montfort (+1716) On Jesus’ And Mary’S Heart, Deyanira Flores
Marian Studies
The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima (1917-2017) offers us a good opportunity to meditate on and renew our devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. This paper dwells on the teachings of St. Louis M. de Montfort (+1716), which are so enlightening and profound. His teaching on Mary's Heart clearly contributed to the theology and devotion of Mary's Heart.
The Patristic Pre-History Of Devotion To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, James K. Hanna
The Patristic Pre-History Of Devotion To The Immaculate Heart Of Mary, James K. Hanna
Marian Studies
Devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart emerged in the Middle Ages and flourished after the apparitions at Lourdes, Rue du Bac, and Fatima. But its roots run deep in tradition and are evident in the writings of the Fathers and the texts of the ancient liturgies. This paper begins by discussing early-Christian exegesis of Luke 2:35 and other key biblical texts. It proceeds to examine the various ways in which the Fathers spoke of Mary’s heart, and considers these in light of recent research on the earliest devotion to the Blessed Virgin. It concludes by evaluating Immaculate Heart devotion according to …

To Know Salvation: Marian Consecration As Antidote To New Gnosticisms, Maura Hearden Fehlner
To Know Salvation: Marian Consecration As Antidote To New Gnosticisms, Maura Hearden Fehlner
Marian Studies
In this essay, the author initiates a discussion about key ways in which the theology behind and practice of Marian consecration as developed by St. Louis de Montfort both refutes the errors of and fulfills the longing indicated by the emergence of strong gnostic currents in contemporary thought. To accommodate the parameters of this project, discussion is limited to three categories of “new Gnosticisms”—political, New Age, and technological—and key theological concepts.
Theological Foundations For Devotion To The Hearts Of Jesus And Mary According To St. John Eudes (1601-1680), Robert Fastiggi
Theological Foundations For Devotion To The Hearts Of Jesus And Mary According To St. John Eudes (1601-1680), Robert Fastiggi
Marian Studies
St. John Eudes united devotion to Mary with devotion to her Son, Jesus Christ. For Eudes, the hearts of Jesus and Mary are inseparable. He recognized that the union of their two hearts is the most intimate union that ever existed. The heart of Jesus dwells in his Mother’s heart, forming a perfect union of the two hearts as one mystical heart. Eudes promoted the Feast of the Admirable Heart of Mary and the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in order to express the mystical union of the two hearts.

The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball
The Heart Of Mary In Light Of A Biblical Anthropology: Mother, Mystic, And Prophet, Virginia M. Kimball
Marian Studies
The biblical emphasis of Vatican II and later developments, such as the address of Pope Benedict XVI to the Marian Congress of 2012 about studying the Blessed Mother from many different perspectives, have led mariologists to a new appreciation for a determined biblical-anthropological approach. This approach has great significance for understanding the heart of the Woman who “held all these things in her heart.” Mary’s heart connects all of us to her--as woman, mother, mystic, and prophet—to her who holds the Lord in her heart, a heart completely united to the heart of her Son, Jesus the Christ.
