Show Us How You Do It, Jonathan Underwood
Show Us How You Do It, Jonathan Underwood
Tenor of Our Times
Published in 2008, Edward J. Robinson’s Show Us How You Do It: Marshall Keeble and the Rise of Black Churches of Christ in the United States, 1914-1968 poses a thesis that Marshall Keeble had such a strong impact on the formation of African American Churches of Christ in the twentieth century because of his willingness to work alongside white supporters of his ministry, thus making two fellowships within the Churches of Christ that reflected the broader racial, social, and religious context of the United States. Robinson accomplishes defending his thesis by first describing Keeble's upbringing and influences in the church. …

In His Image And Into His Likeness: Human Nature's Theosis In C.S. Lewis's Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold, Jacob Ross Taylor
In His Image And Into His Likeness: Human Nature's Theosis In C.S. Lewis's Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold, Jacob Ross Taylor
Honors Theses
C.S. Lewis’s standalone title Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold transforms the Greek mythos “Cupid and Psyche” into a novel about human nature being deified. In TWHF, Lewis presents an arc from pagan dualism through rationalism and finally to our relational God who makes us holy like Him. Lewis studies have suffered from the lack scholarship applying St. Thomas Aquinas’s christened Aristotelianism which would illuminate the metaphysical foundations that Lewis founds his words and builds his worlds upon. In Aristotle metaphysical biology he proposed that the human soul is neither an altogether separable spirit divorced from the bodily …
The Soteriological Necessity Of A Full Incarnation And Its Implications For Believers, Addison Yates
The Soteriological Necessity Of A Full Incarnation And Its Implications For Believers, Addison Yates
Tenor of Our Times
At the center of Christian theology lies the study of Jesus the Christ, his being, and his work. Differing beliefs about Jesus’ divinity and humanity were a source of early Christian controversies, and the first ecumenical councils addressed these Christological controversies by affirming that Jesus was both fully human and fully divine. Though this doctrine is widely accepted in modern Christian theology, many practicing Christians, particularly those who are unfamiliar with Christian history, may never have explored Jesus’ nature in his incarnation or considered its implications. The aim of this work is twofold: to establish that a full incarnation of …

Swapping Drinking Songs For Spiritual Songs: Skolia And Possession In Ephesians 5 And Mozambique, Alan Howell
Swapping Drinking Songs For Spiritual Songs: Skolia And Possession In Ephesians 5 And Mozambique, Alan Howell
Bible & Ministry Faculty Research and Publications
The prevalence of both drinking songs and spirit possession among the Makua-Metto of Mozambique shaped the way in which Mozambican Christians interpreted Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. Based upon their cultural context, they naturally heard chapter 5 addressing these two phenomena as interconnected topics. That experience led to an investigation into the background of the original recipients of the letter through the lens of drinking songs and spirit possession to see if reading this text in the “laboratory” of the Mozambican context can shed new light on contemporary readings of the Ephesian 5 text and provide an example of non-Western …
God As Patron And Proprietor: God The Father And The Gospel Of Matthew In An African Folk Islamic Context, Alan Howell, Robert Andrew Montgomery
God As Patron And Proprietor: God The Father And The Gospel Of Matthew In An African Folk Islamic Context, Alan Howell, Robert Andrew Montgomery
Bible & Ministry Faculty Research and Publications
While Patron-Client dynamics may seem strange to Westerners, characteristics of that system are shared by the cultures of the New Testament and the Makua-Metto people of Mozambique. The way that the Gospel of Matthew presents God as Father points to the social realities of the time which highlighted God’s role as Patron. This line of thinking resonates with the Makua-Metto and provides a powerful way of communicating about God to a folk Islamic people.

Avoiding Pastoral Malpractice: Implications Of The Study Of Biblical Languages For Spiritual Care, Kevin Youngblood
Bible & Ministry Faculty Research and Publications
The study of Biblical languages is in decline in theological curricula across the nation if not around the globe. While this streamlined approach to ministerial training may be desirable for attracting students to programs and hastening degree completion, its long term effects on the spiritual health of the church could be catastrophic. This presentation addresses ministerial candidates in a major North American seminary to warn of some of the potential dangers of neglecting this aspect of pastoral training and practice.

Romans, Reconciliation, And Role-Playing In Mozambique: Benefiting From The 'New Perspective On Paul, Alan Howell
Bible & Ministry Faculty Research and Publications
The “New Perspective on Paul” has shaped the author’s teaching of the book of Romans in Mozambique. Role-playing the background of the letter and using an important play on words in the Makua-Metto language helps present the historical and religious issues involved. This sets up a more comprehensive reading of Romans which, instead of focusing on individual justification, serves to find important points of contact and relevance for the church in Mozambique at congregational, civic, and cosmic levels.

Recognizing Poverty Rules: Addressing The Causes And Patterns Of Absolute Poverty Among The Makua-Metto People, Alan Howell
Bible & Ministry Faculty Research and Publications
Drawing on qualitative interviews with the Makua-Metto people of Mozambique, the author develops a curriculum addressing the topic of poverty. The contextualized approach considers poverty as a system and makes use of local solutions. The article includes a diagram illustrating the causes of poverty and two series of narratives linked by the metaphor of games to demonstrate Makua-Metto behavioral norms of people in poverty and those living free from its deepest effects.
