Interpreting "Shijia Buzu(室家不足)" In The Book Of Songs·Shaonan·Hang Lu Through The Lens Of Interchangeable Uses Of "Zu(足)" And "Shu(疋)", Zhensan Fang, Cheng Zhang
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
The characters "足" and "疋" have the same etymology and were occasionally used interchangeably. It was during the Warring States period that they began to be used separately. In Chapter "室家不足" of the Book of Songs, "室家" should be interpreted as "家庭," and "足" is equivalent to "疋," which is pronounced as "雅" and means "正." Therefore, "室家不足" refers to the illegitimacy of the family relationship.

This research is based on the framework of social constructivism, utilizing the principle of Human Universals as a methodology to compare the similarities and differences between the ideation and formation methods of Chinese characters and English alphabets. Through comparative analysis of the ideation of English letters (pictogramme) and the origin of Chinese characters, known as the "Six Categories Theory," we discover their alignment in terms of social, traditional, and cultural aspects. This article discusses Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) implemented in the Chinese classroom. TBLT involves a three-phase pedagogical sequence, including pre-task, on-task, and post-task. Different task-based learning activities are designed to promote learners’ language acquisition through the performance of tasks. Learners are engaged in interactive and collaborative communication to accomplish meaningful and relevant real life tasks. This article explores the application of one TBLT unit in Chinese for learners’ language development in terms of both fluency and accuracy.

We describe here ten years of development of a Chinese learning technology and five years of practical experience in integrating this technology in MIT classrooms for intermediate-high and advanced-low students. Key results are as follows:
- There is no need to disrupt the classroom experience (both for the teacher and the students);
- Technology provides a sharp increase in learning efficiency and motivation, as confirmed by students; and
- This overall improvement in learning is achieved by focusing on the efficiency of personal study time.

Based on the theory of intertextual discourse, this paper makes a comparative analysis of the IP source texts, Chinese subtitles and English subtitles of IP films from the perspective of Chinese teaching. The research found that Chinese subtitles of IP films which compared with the source texts reconstructed the descending language of the characters, implanted popular contemporary language and culture, strengthened the language escalation of dramatic conflicts, and increased the sense of humor and entertainment of characters' language, so as to be suitable for Chinese teaching and cultural communication. This pilot study examined the effectiveness and students’ perceptions of a multimedia module on intermediate Chinese-as-a-Foreign-Language (CFL) learners’ understanding and use of the “shì…de” construction. The module was designed based on the First Principles of Instruction (Morrill, 2002) and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (Mayer, 2009; 2014). It provided a systematic and comprehensive approach to teaching the “shì…de” construction, one of the most challenging grammar points in CFL. However, it remains unknown whether the PD programs are appropriately designed regarding selecting topics and presenters. A total of 432 presentations of this study were retrieved from six Chinese and American organizations during the pandemic from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2021. This article aims to explore the role and implications of YouTube videos in CFL education. To that end, it firstly introduces a questionnaire survey conducted among Chinese language learners in Barcelona, Spain, focusing on their viewing habits related to YouTube Chinese-learning videos. I present the following hypotheses: Providing students with comprehensible and interesting reading material in pinyin will result in improved acquisition of oral/aural Mandarin. This additional competence in Mandarin will make texts written in Hanzi more predictable and easier to understand, resulting in improved acquisition of Hanzi. If these predictions are confirmed, it means more rapid acquisition of Mandarin and more efficient acquisition of characters.

The demand for Chinese learning in the world puts forward higher needs for the competence of a CFL (Chinese as a Foreign Language) teacher. A CFL teacher’s intercultural communication competence (ICC), as a unique and critical part, needs to be concerned more. Inductive and descriptive approaches were used to analyze 86 ICC cases identified from "Cases and Analysis of Cross-cultural Communication" and "Detailed Explanation of Classic Cases of International Chinese Teachers." The cases were categorized into seven cross-cultural communication elements: environmental adaptation, cross-cultural integration, cross-cultural communication, self-regulation, communication, foreign language, and team spirit.
