Letter From The Editor: What Happened Last November?, Kimberly Flint-Hamilton
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
2017 has been a very difficult year. The whole world changed on November 8, 2016. We woke the next morning to find that Donald Trump had secured the presidency. Many of us watched the news in stunned disbelief. After a campaign built on division, disrespect, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, and elitism, our fears had been realized. Most of us probably never imagined that it could happen. But it did.

Achtus/Bcts Joint Statement: Racist Hate Crimes In The United States, Black Catholic Theological Symposium, Academy Of Catholic Hispanic Theologians Of The United States
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
In the wake of the horrific events of Charlottesville Va. on August 11-12, 2017, and the deeply troubling displays of hate speech, neo-Nazi and white supremacist ideologies, the recent pardoning of former Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio, and the battle over the “sanctuary cities” law in Texas, the leadership of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States (ACHTUS) and the Black Catholic Theological Symposium (BCTS) stand in solidarity as one body, with one voice to condemn the systemic violence, racism and legitimized hatred that diminish the integrity of the United States of America. We call for a united …
Strengthening Black‐Brown Solidarity: Latino/A Race, Unauthorized Blacks, And The Roots Of Anti‐Brown Violence, Jeremy V. Cruz
Strengthening Black‐Brown Solidarity: Latino/A Race, Unauthorized Blacks, And The Roots Of Anti‐Brown Violence, Jeremy V. Cruz
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
This essay analyzes intersecting experiences of racism and U.S. state violence, black-brown tensions, and future possibilities for anti-racist solidarity. Its race analysis and moral evaluation proceed from a Chicano perspective and through the theoretical lens of transnationalism, thinking about anti-black racism as a global imperial project. The author argues that sustained analysis of Latino/a racialization (and racism), of the precariousness of black citizenship, and of the genesis of anti-brown racist practices within and alongside antiblackness can all function to strengthen black-brown solidarity.

Grounded In Mercy: Embracing A Practical Theological Response To The Reality Of Hiv/Aids Sero‐Discordancy, Simonmary Asese Aihiokhai
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
The crises of HIV/AIDS infections and deaths in sub-Saharan Africa call for pragmatic solutions that are grounded in a broader vision of God’s mercy. While the church has and continues to be the major non-governmental provider of assistance to those communities and persons battling with HIV/AIDS infections, a critical and holistic review of its stance on rejecting any usefulness of condoms as prophylactics for preventing HIV infections. This approach is most urgent today as Africans continue to experience high rates of HIV infection among monogamous married couples who are sero-discordant.

"Justice And Mercy": The Question Of Discordancy, The Development Of Doctrine And African Catholicism, John Segun Odeyemi
"Justice And Mercy": The Question Of Discordancy, The Development Of Doctrine And African Catholicism, John Segun Odeyemi
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
The call for Justice and Mercy in the teachings of Pope Francis raises critical questions across theological and secular contexts. In the light of the Pontiff’s call for a Jubilee year of Mercy, in Evangelii Gaudium, and references in his teachings to these themes, I intend to investigate the theological meaning of Justice and Mercy and to reconcile these with what Pope Francis means. Then proffer as a concrete example, discordancy in Africa as an opportunity for a doctrinal and magisterial definition on the use of condoms as prophylactics to show a Church that acts mercifully and does justice.
Beyond "Authentically Black And Truly Catholic": Black Catholic Identity For A New Time, Bryan M. Massingale
Beyond "Authentically Black And Truly Catholic": Black Catholic Identity For A New Time, Bryan M. Massingale
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
This essay examines the genesis and implications of the oft-cited phrase, "authentically black and truly Catholic." Tracing its origins as descriptive of the aspirations of Black Catholics in the United States following the Second Vatican Council, the author relates both the contributions and the significant limitations of this ecclesial project. He concludes by offering a new phrasing that he argues is more adequate to the current aspirations and needs of the Black Catholic faith community, namely, "radically Black and authentically Catholic."

Black And Brown Pauls: A Pauline Case Of Racial Profiling; A Hermeneutical Reading Of Acts 21:27‐40a And 22:23‐29 And The Reality Of The African American And Hispanic Communities In The United States, Dempsey Rosales Acosta
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
The present study analyzes the socio-historical context and setting narrated in the canonical episode of Paul’s arrest and his treatment in Jerusalem according to the narrative of Acts 21:27-40a and 22:23-29. The pericopes become the fundamental platform through which it is possible to present both a hermeneutical and theological interpretation of the liabilities and ultimate consequences of racial profiling, especially when it is exercised by the civil authorities, an institutionalized power, or a general culture. The diachronic and synchronic exegetical analysis of the pericopes are combined with the methodological approaches of cognitive semantics and the practical theology that lead to …

Human Development, Human Rights, And The 50th Anniversary Of Populorum Progressio, Ellen Maccarone
Human Development, Human Rights, And The 50th Anniversary Of Populorum Progressio, Ellen Maccarone
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
At the 50th anniversary of the encyclical Populorum Progressio, we have a critical opportunity to bring Paul VI’s insights to the social practice of human rights. The development of peoples discussed by the encyclical isolates areas of significant concern to the Church and humanity more broadly. This, however, is not to say that there are not other issues overlooked in Populorum Progressio that also need to be addressed.
In this paper I argue that the understanding of human development found in Populorum Progressio serves as an important yet sometimes overlooked foundation in Catholic social teaching for the advancement of …
Pope Francis And Alternative Economic Visions, John Sniegocki
Pope Francis And Alternative Economic Visions, John Sniegocki
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
Pope Francis has expressed deep concern about the injustices and ecological harms of the current global economic system: “[L]et us not be afraid to say it,” Francis proclaimed to a worldwide gathering of grassroots social movements in Bolivia. “We want change, real change, structural change. This system is by now intolerable.” In this paper I explore Francis’ multifaceted critiques of our current global economic system, including the empirical evidence that supports such critiques. I will both highlight continuities in the views of Francis and previous popes—especially Paul VI and John Paul II—and highlight several ways that Francis articulates important new …
The Dignity Of The Human Person: Catholic And Islamic Approaches To Human Rights, Matthew Bagot
The Dignity Of The Human Person: Catholic And Islamic Approaches To Human Rights, Matthew Bagot
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
At the beginning of The Global Face of Public Faith, David Hollenbach, S.J., challenges the world’s religious communities to relate their distinctive visions of the good human life with the growing awareness that all persons are linked in a web of global interdependence. Hollenbach’s work is founded on an understanding of the common good that he discerns at Vatican II and calls “dialogic universalism.” It is universal because humans are sufficiently alike when it comes to the requirements for their respective goods; it is dialogic because cultural differences necessitate deep intellectual engagement across traditions if they are to be …
Gay Teachers In Catholic Schools: A Conflict Of Human Rights, Ish Ruiz
Gay Teachers In Catholic Schools: A Conflict Of Human Rights, Ish Ruiz
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
What happens when a person’s exercise of a human right conflicts with another’s enjoyment of a human right? Such is the case when a gay teacher in a Catholic school is fired as the school exercises its right to religious freedom in order to ensure its teachers live lives consistent with Church teaching.
As religious institutions, Catholic schools are protected by a ministerial exception that offers legal immunity to Catholic educational institutions that fire gay and lesbian teachers (teachers are sometimes considered “ministers” by the courts). In many states these firings on the basis of sexual orientation or marital status …
Confirmation In The Spirit By Conformation To Mary: The Gifts Of The Spirit In Mariological Perspective, Jacob Phillips
Confirmation In The Spirit By Conformation To Mary: The Gifts Of The Spirit In Mariological Perspective, Jacob Phillips
Marian Studies
This article investigates a Mariological interpretation of the sacrament of confirmation, exploring the figure of Mary as a model recipient of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, with broader implications for understanding the interrelation of nature and grace. It draws upon a strand of patristic Mariology that relates Christian initiation to conformation with Mary. Such passages are found in Origen, Gregory of Nazianzus and Gregory of Nyssa, who all speak of the souls of the faithful being conformed to Mary. As Mary received the Word of God in her womb, so Christ is formed more deeply in the soul of …
Peter Julian Eymard, Saint Of The Eucharist And Our Lady Of The Most Blessed Sacrament, Dwight P. Campbell
Peter Julian Eymard, Saint Of The Eucharist And Our Lady Of The Most Blessed Sacrament, Dwight P. Campbell
Marian Studies
St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811-1868) founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in 1856 and is known as the “Saint of the Eucharist” (a title confirmed by Pope St. John XXIII in his canonization homily, Dec. 9, 1962). He explored many aspects of the great mystery of the Holy Eucharist in the conferences he delivered to his fellow religious over the years. These conferences have been published in nine separate volumes under different titles. One of the volumes—entitled “Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament: Readings for the Month of May”— consists of thirty-one conferences, one for each day of …
Our Lady Of The Blessed Sacrament: Theological Foundations And Historical Development, Richard May
Our Lady Of The Blessed Sacrament: Theological Foundations And Historical Development, Richard May
Marian Studies
This article traces the historical development and theological foundations for the title, “Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament.” It examines the reasons for the title rooted in St. Augustine’s recognition that "Jesus took his Flesh from the flesh of Mary.” Tracing the connection between the Virgin Mary and the Eucharist through the Patristic era, the Middle Ages, and more recent centuries, various works of art are noted as well the insights of spiritual writers. In particular, the contributions of St. Peter Julian Eymard (1811–1868) are highlighted along with those of Pope St. John Paul II. The article not only examines …

The Immaculate Conception: Gift And Sign For The Neophyte, Danielle M. Peters
The Immaculate Conception: Gift And Sign For The Neophyte, Danielle M. Peters
Marian Studies
Mary's indispensable participation in the historical event of the Incarnation which we profess in our baptismal belief, leads us to reflect on her participation in the sacramental event of the rebirth of her spiritual children. The PAMI Document “The Mother of the Lord: Memory, Presence, Hope” (art. 47; cf. USCCB, Behold your Mother, 55) points out that in the light of Ephesians 1:3-5 “baptism, the immersion into the Paschal mystery of Christ, (cf. Rm 6:3-5) corresponds sacramentally to Mary’s Immaculate Conception.” This article explores the Immaculate Conception as “a forceful sign of God’s grace operative within a creature” (art. 48) …
Our Lady’S Presence In The Mass In The Teaching Of Pope John Paul Ii, Arthur Burton Calkins
Our Lady’S Presence In The Mass In The Teaching Of Pope John Paul Ii, Arthur Burton Calkins
Marian Studies
This article builds on research I have already done and published in the Homiletic & Pastoral Review, in Mary at the Foot of the Cross, Vol. 6, and in Antiphon (2006). These studies were progressive so that each one developed the topic with more documentation. This article summarizes and synthesizes these studies in terms of the principles abstracted from the Pope John Paul II’s teaching and strive to find points of comparison in the works of theologians and mystics.
Mary And The Nuptial Dimension Of The Constitution Of The Church In The Eucharistic Sacrifice According To Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Chao Nguyen O.P.
Mary And The Nuptial Dimension Of The Constitution Of The Church In The Eucharistic Sacrifice According To Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Chao Nguyen O.P.
Marian Studies
Throughout the centuries, Christianity has reflected deeply on the Paschal dimension of the Eucharist as the source and summit of the Christian life. However, little has been said of its nuptial character. This essay examines Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological insights on the Eucharist in both its sacrificial and nuptial dimensions in relationship to the Blessed Virgin Mary. For Balthasar, these dual aspects converge and are exemplified in Our Lady whose fiat at the Annunciation comes to a climax at the Crucifixion. There, she is mystically and nuptially united to the Son who gives himself away eucharistically, and she thus …

The Baptismal Spirituality Of St. Louis-Marie De Montfort, Frederick L. Miller
The Baptismal Spirituality Of St. Louis-Marie De Montfort, Frederick L. Miller
Marian Studies
St. Louis-Marie de Montfort (1673–1716) believed that Marian consecration was the perfect renewal of one’s baptismal promises. This article explores the foundations of St. Louis-Marie’s baptismal theology as grounded in the Council of Trent and the French School of spirituality of Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle (1575–1629). In a special way, the article shows how St. Louis-Marie incorporated Marian devotion into his parish missions. For St. Louis-Marie true devotion to Mary is ultimately a baptismal gift that serves communion with the Holy Trinity.
