Mary And The Church In The Teachings Of Paul Vi, John Paul Ii And Francis, Thomas A. Thompson

On October 14, 2016 we joined together, across the globe in real time, to listen and discuss three presentations on the subject of Mary and the Church in the teachings of PaulVI, John Paul II, and Francis.

These presentations began via teleconference promptly at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time. After a brief introduction, each presenter gave a 15-minute presentation on his or her topic. The session concluded with an hour of open discussion and final remarks at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time.

Intellectualism And American Parish Priests: A Study Of The Library Of Monsignor Bernard J. Beckmeyer, Stephanie Soule

The 1955 publication of John Tracy Ellis's article "American Catholics and the Intellectual Life" sparked new discussion among historians about the role of intellectualism in the lives of American Catholics. This article examines the intellectual habits of American parish priests in the early and mid-twentieth century by studying the working library of Monsignor Bernard J. Beckmeyer of Dayton, Ohio. The contents of his library support Ellis's assertion that parish priests usually concentrated on the administration of their parishes, and not on scholarship and intellectualism. Vatican II highlights the relation between Mary and the Church. What are the theological and more practical consequences of this new/old vision? Any brief attention to global, national, and local news underlines the urgency for education that leads to knowledge about and action for the common good. Catholic institutions of higher learning have a dual history of encouraging students to speak and act on behalf of the common good while also pursuing the good life. Creating The Provençal Village, Michele Devitt

The pictures of the University of Dayton's Marian Library Provençal Village in the recent issue of Creche Herald tell part of the story. However, the best part of the story is unseen; it is about the volunteers who collectively spent hundreds of hours bringing the village to life. Sixteen dedicated volunteers under master engineer Mike Foley created various parts of the scene.
