It is eminently logical that the bare first word of this essay should be as to the philosophical motive that makes it appear interesting and fruitful. If we let two circles represent, respectively, the fields of ethics and economics, it seems probable that they will somehow intersect, providing an area common to both. It is this presumptive borderland of ethics and economics that we intend to study under conditions of restricted method and scope.
