An Evaluation Of 2 Peter As A Testament, Joel Thomas Jun 2022

An Evaluation Of 2 Peter As A Testament, Joel Thomas

Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal

The authorship of 2 Peter is one of the most disputed areas of NT studies. There are many facets to this issue. This paper will address the contention by many scholars that 2 Peter is testamentary in nature and is therefore pseudepigraphal. The various testamentary genres will be analyzed for characteristics, and then those characteristics will be compared to 2 Peter to determine whether 2 Peter is testamentary in nature and the likelihood that it is pseudepigraphal. The conclusion of this study is 2 Peter does not meet the characteristics of any testamentary genre and that it is in fact …

An Analysis Of The Attributive Participle And The Relative Clause In The Greek New Testament, Michael Hayes Sep 2014

An Analysis Of The Attributive Participle And The Relative Clause In The Greek New Testament, Michael Hayes

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Hayes, Michael, E. "An Analysis of the Attributive Participle and the Relative Clause in the Greek New Testament." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2014. 379 pp.

Many New Testament Greek grammarians assert that the Greek attributive participle and the Greek relative clause are "equivalent." A survey of those assertions reveals a lack of comprehensive and original research with respect to this grammatical "rule. “James W. Voelz originally asserted that the two constructions were equivalent. In recent times, however, he has made exploratory observations concerning the restrictive nature of attributive participles and the possible nonrestrictive nature of relative clauses, thereby questioning the …

The Relationality Of The Holy One Of Israel In The Book Of Isaiah, Tony T.K. Chen Jan 2013

The Relationality Of The Holy One Of Israel In The Book Of Isaiah, Tony T.K. Chen

ATS Dissertations

This dissertation explores the ways that “the Holy One of Israel” is used in the book of Isaiah to depict Yahweh, the powerful and unapproachable God, in his personal relationship with Israel. It investigates the actions and character of Yahweh as the Holy One of Israel and the nature and purpose of Yahweh’s holiness as reflected in the Holy One of Israel’s treatment of Israel. It considers how Yahweh seeks to manifest his holiness in the midst of rebellion through righteous actions. In particular, it examines how the Holy One of Israel rebukes, redeems, and restores Israel, despite her rebellious …

The Rhetorical Approach To 1 Thessalonians In Light Of Funeral Oration, Jae Kyung Cho Jan 2013

The Rhetorical Approach To 1 Thessalonians In Light Of Funeral Oration, Jae Kyung Cho

ATS Dissertations

The present dissertation is a study of the rhetorical approach to 1 Thessalonians, particularly funeral oration. Though many scholars have interpreted 1 Thessalonians in light of thematic perspective, mirror reading, and epistolary approach, this dissertation asserts that Paul employs elements of epideictic funerary oratory to persuade his audience in writing 1 Thessalonians. Moreover, the dissertation shows that Paul’s use of funerary language with some twists in meaning and purpose illustrates that Paul employs topoi and the purpose of funeral oration in 1 Thessalonians.

Encountering the growing persecution, sufferings, and even death of members, the believers of Thessalonica needed encouragement and …

Christian-Jewish Relations: Theological Issues, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

The major disagreements between Jews and traditional Christians (i.e. those who accept the canon of the New Testament and the theological decisions of the first seven ecumenical Councils) focus on the mystery of God and the person of the Messiah. The antithetical approaches to the questions of three persons in one God and the person of the Messiah, believed by Christians to be Jesus of Nazareth, true God and true man, will not be set aside; however, clarification of the Catholic understanding regarding the Jewish stance can remove generalized accusations of blindness and/or malice. This article examine the key passages …
