The Historical And Theological Backdrop Of Jesus's Names In John Chapter One: A Baseline For Christology, Joseph D. Carson May 2021

The Historical And Theological Backdrop Of Jesus's Names In John Chapter One: A Baseline For Christology, Joseph D. Carson

Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal

At the beginning of John’s gospel, a rich theology of Christ’s person unfolds through multiple professions of newly called disciples. In order to understand the person of Christ, the various titles associated with his name should be analyzed in their historical and theological contexts. Full of Jesus’ titles, John 1 is an intersection of history, title-giving, and theology, rich with the meanings of Jesus’ titles; furthermore, John 1 is written with historical accuracy and with impactful theology for the Church. It orients the trajectory for the following chapters and gives a foundation for Christology. Cumulatively, the names of Jesus in …

The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel Of John, Bastian Ogon Jan 2020

The Concept Of Truth In The Gospel Of John, Bastian Ogon

Master's Theses

Problem

The term ἀλήθεια, 'truth' is a frequently used term in the Gospel of John. The fundamental question of this paper is to discuss how truth is understood by John and if the Gospel of John conveys a specific concept of truth?

Method

The first part will briefly consider common philosophical concepts of truth, as well as epistemological issues connected to them. These approaches will be compared with John's truth concept. In the second part the most important passages where ἀλήθεια is used will be carefully analyzed exegetically, in order to understand the concept of ἀλήθεια in Johannine thought. The …

The Sacramentality Of The "Bread Of Life Discourse" In John 6, Anthony Nabor Apr 2019

The Sacramentality Of The "Bread Of Life Discourse" In John 6, Anthony Nabor

Global Tides

The “Bread of Life Discourse” in John 6 is often read sacramentally and used as justification for eucharistic beliefs regarding true-presence. Though the evangelist of the Gospel deals with chronology differently than modern authors and readers, the sacramental-sounding language in the “Bread of Life Discourse” does not necessarily mean that the passage is referring to the establishment of the Eucharist at the Last Supper. The main point of the “Bread of Life Discourse” is to emphasize faith in Jesus through the metaphor of bread, continuing the dominant theme in the entire chapter of John 6.

The Humility And Glory Of The Lamb: Toward A Robust Apocalyptic Christology, Jeffrey Dickson Dec 2017

The Humility And Glory Of The Lamb: Toward A Robust Apocalyptic Christology, Jeffrey Dickson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There exists a conspicuous void in Christological scholarship both historically and more recently as it pertains to interest in what the Revelation of John has to offer one’s understanding of the God-Man. Furthermore, those works that do investigate the Apocalypse for its Christological content fail to appreciate how its central character is portrayed. In so doing, these settle for overly simplistic interpretations of unique verbiage John employs to describe Christ—particularly the Lamb (ἀρνίον). Therefore, in an effort to cultivate the clearing that exists in the Christological forest, this dissertation will endeavor to reach a robust understanding of Revelation’s Lamb. Ultimately, …

The First Thing Andrew Did' [John 1:41]: Readers As Witnesses In The Fourth Gospel, Mark L. Trump Apr 2017

The First Thing Andrew Did' [John 1:41]: Readers As Witnesses In The Fourth Gospel, Mark L. Trump

Dissertations (1934 -)

In 1996, Robert F. Kysar identified one of the leading issues that would form scholarly debate regarding the Fourth Gospel for decades to come: whether the Fourth Gospel is designed to strengthen and affirm the faith of those inside a Johannine community (a sectarian document/community) or to bring to faith those who were not yet part of that community (an evangelistic tract/missionary community). The sectarian position, often connected to the work of J. Louis Martyn, Raymond E. Brown, and Wayne A. Meeks, has become the received tradition in Johannine studies. Increasingly, others have called into question not only the results …

Mimesis: Foot Washing From Luke To John, Keith L. Yoder Nov 2016

Mimesis: Foot Washing From Luke To John, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

In this paper I argue that the Foot Washing of John 13:1–17, as literary composition, is a creative imitation of the Foot Washing and Anointing of Luke 7:36–50. Comparison of the respective settings, action descriptions, dialogs, and transitions brings to light a large array of mostly unexplored literary connections between these two texts. Analysis of the parallel features reveals a high level of density, order, and distinctiveness that clearly establishes an intertextual relationship of creative imitation, that combination of mimēsis and zēlōsis widely practiced by authors in antiquity. Key markers of directionality arising from the evidence points to Luke's text …

God's Getting Married: The Wedding At Cana As A Dramatization Of Covenantal Fulfillment, Rachael M. Mcgill Jan 2015

God's Getting Married: The Wedding At Cana As A Dramatization Of Covenantal Fulfillment, Rachael M. Mcgill

The Hilltop Review

This paper offers a new approach to interpreting the miracle at Cana by drawing connections to other events in the Old and New Testament. This paper also examines other elements to the passage such as cultural and historical background, the nature of signs in John's gospel, and Johannine language. This article suggests a literary interpretation of the Cana passage, concluding that it is not just an allegory but a dramatization of the process of the commencement and fulfillment of the new covenant.

Can You Love Your Employees? (Case Study), John Beckett

Theology of Work Project

Samantha thought the advice of her grad school professor was a little unusual—words given her as she was about to launch her career: “Don’t get too close to your co-workers,” he said. “You never know when you’re going to have to fire someone, and you don’t want to fire your close friends.” Soon Samantha was moving up the ranks at Agile, a large pharmaceutical firm, and had several associates reporting to her. Reading a book on leadership, she was drawn to the story of Vince Lombardi, the legendary football coach of Wisconsin’s Green Bay Packers in the late ’50s. She …

"Them" In John 19:16, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

The Synoptic gospels Mark and Matthew both state that Pilate’s soldiers crucified Jesus. John 19:16, however, goes beyond Mark and Matthew by leading the reader to identify Jesus’ executioners as the Jews rather than the soldiers.

The Signs And Miracles Of Jesus In John’S Gospel, David C. Taylor Jr Nov 2012

The Signs And Miracles Of Jesus In John’S Gospel, David C. Taylor Jr

David C Taylor Jr

The Gospel of John is also known as the “Miraculous Gospel” or the “Gospel of Signs.” In his book, John records 8 signs that prove the Deity of Christ. Jesus came to display His Deity to the world. Though the other Gospels record many other miracles, the eight that will be explored here are specific to proving that Christ is the Messiah.

The Son-Father Relationship And Christological Symbolism In The Gospel Of John, Adesola Akala Jan 2012

The Son-Father Relationship And Christological Symbolism In The Gospel Of John, Adesola Akala

ATS Dissertations

The relationship between Jesus the Son and God the Father plays a crucial role in the Johannine revelation of Christ. The Gospel of John symbolically portrays Jesus as the Son of God who is relationally inseparable from his Father. This research proposes that the Son-Father Relationship (SFR) is at the center of the network of Christological symbols in the Fourth Gospel. The SFR serves to fulfill the author’s stated purpose of John 20:31 and acts as an organizing principle that integrates and structures the Gospel’s unique symbolism. The uniqueness of Johannine symbolism is illustrated in the definition and theory of …

Spirit And Atonement In John, Keith L. Yoder Dec 2011

Spirit And Atonement In John, Keith L. Yoder

Keith L. Yoder

The Spirit texts in the Fourth Gospel fall into two subsets, one that speaks of an unqualified “spirit”, and the other that speaks of the “Spirit of Truth” or the “Holy Spirit”, also identified as the “Paraclete”. I find that the alliance of Spirit and blood at the end of First John is a clue that uncovers a similar Spirit and Atonement connection in the Gospel. I demonstrate that the subset of unqualified “spirit” passages in John are regularly supplemented or framed with Atonement material, while the Paraclete Spirit texts have no such supplements, and that this phenomenon reflects a …
