Mashiah: Messianism In Jewish Apocalyptic Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Fred R. De Leon Aug 2022

Mashiah: Messianism In Jewish Apocalyptic Literature Of The Second Temple Period, Fred R. De Leon

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This Thesis challenges notions that have dominated biblical scholarship for more than a hundred years. Up until the end of the twentieth century scholars uniformly believed that the concept of a suffering Messiah was not part of early first century CE Judaism. It was believed to a be a Christian creation. There is however startling evidence of messianic precursors to Jesus, including one who is introduced as the 'Prince of the Congregation' in recently published fragments of the Dead Sea Scrolls. This is not surprising since the authors of the Tanakh lay the groundwork for an evolving and malleable concept …

The Humility And Glory Of The Lamb: Toward A Robust Apocalyptic Christology, Jeffrey Dickson Dec 2017

The Humility And Glory Of The Lamb: Toward A Robust Apocalyptic Christology, Jeffrey Dickson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

There exists a conspicuous void in Christological scholarship both historically and more recently as it pertains to interest in what the Revelation of John has to offer one’s understanding of the God-Man. Furthermore, those works that do investigate the Apocalypse for its Christological content fail to appreciate how its central character is portrayed. In so doing, these settle for overly simplistic interpretations of unique verbiage John employs to describe Christ—particularly the Lamb (ἀρνίον). Therefore, in an effort to cultivate the clearing that exists in the Christological forest, this dissertation will endeavor to reach a robust understanding of Revelation’s Lamb. Ultimately, …

From Beginning To The End: Humans As Caretakers And Co-Creators Of Nature, Amber Grothe Jun 2017

From Beginning To The End: Humans As Caretakers And Co-Creators Of Nature, Amber Grothe

Dialogue & Nexus

Followers of the Christian faith ought to reconsider their role as being created in the ‘image of God,’ their interpretation of the Apocalyptic literature, and the relationship between the two. Different interpretations of these two narratives in Biblical literature (the Creation and the End Times) can create and support the view of humans as care-takers of Earth. A different perspective of the Creation story and Apocalyptic literature can lead to a different view of humans and their role in nature. By realizing their equivalence with nature and nature’s true ownership by God, humans are demoted from nature’s tyrannical kings to …

Jude's Enochian Apocalypse, Lucian Lopez O.S.B. May 2016

Jude's Enochian Apocalypse, Lucian Lopez O.S.B.

Obsculta

Jude’s was an apocalyptic imagination much like that of the writer of Revelation, but he had no need to write his own apocalypse. In his brief epistle, written sometime before 62 CE,1 Jude revealed that the apocalyptic imagery fueling his own mythos was none other than that of Enoch and various other ancient stories of the Hebrew people.

Enochian Literature: A Contextual Exploration And Examination Of Its Correlation To Biblical Scripture, Ryan D. Horton Apr 2016

Enochian Literature: A Contextual Exploration And Examination Of Its Correlation To Biblical Scripture, Ryan D. Horton

Theology Undergraduate Work

Enochian literature is a group of ancient texts which collectively depict the life and ministry of the biblical patriarch Enoch. The New Bible Dictionary states, “Enoch was a man of outstanding sanctity who enjoyed close fellowship with God.”[1] The writings of Enoch tell a fascinating story of theology, prophecy, and eschatology. The subjects of this story include giants, angels, demons, and ancestors of Noah. The Anchor Bible Dictionary states, “The Enochic corpus claims to be a series of revelations which Enoch received in antiquity and transmitted to his son Methuselah for the benefit of the righteous who would live …

The Eight Empire: New Hypotheses For The Symbols Of Revelation 17, Vanderlei Dorneles Aug 2015

The Eight Empire: New Hypotheses For The Symbols Of Revelation 17, Vanderlei Dorneles

Andrews University Seminary Student Journal

This article analyzes the prophetic symbols of Rev 17 with the purpose of exploring the relations among the scarlet beast, the first beast of Rev 13 and the dragon of Rev 12. The parallel among the three symbols is used as a basis to suggest a relation between the restored leopard-like beast and the harlot, and between the two-horned beast and the scarlet beast in his eighth king phase. The study is done in light of the Old Testament (OT) context in which the symbols of the dragon and beasts, used by John, are related to political powers that persecuted …

The Old Testament Source Of Rev 21:3c, Helen Cadogan Aug 2003

The Old Testament Source Of Rev 21:3c, Helen Cadogan

Master of Art Theology Thesis

This paper intends an assessment of the textual form of Rev 21:3c as an OT reference; as such it may have something to contribute to the discussion commenced by Menken and continued by Schuchard on deciphering the form of the OT in the NT. Even though other aspects of Revelation study may be vital, the limitations of this research preclude more than the most cursory excursion, if any at all, into the ongoing dialogue on the use of the OT in the NT,language, style, authorship, unity, symbolism, the historical context of Revelation, or whether the author of the Gospel, the …

"Blessed Are They Who Keep These Words" An Examination Of The Use Of Language And The Intentionality Of Solecisms In The Apocalypse, Timothy Rosenthal May 2000

"Blessed Are They Who Keep These Words" An Examination Of The Use Of Language And The Intentionality Of Solecisms In The Apocalypse, Timothy Rosenthal

Master of Sacred Theology Seminar Papers

This paper purposes to examine the role and impact of the solecisms found in the Apocalypse. Before one can isolate a discussion about solecisms one must first address the issue of the style of Revelation (and, to some extent, that of the NT in general) and the degree to which Semiticisms appear. Thus, though the paper wishes to focus upon solecisms, a rather large portion of the paper will necessarily first address the whole issue of the nature and style of the Greek in Revelation so that a clear understanding of solecisms might emerge.

Early Latin Commentaries On The Apocalypse, Francis X. Gumerlock Jul 1997

Early Latin Commentaries On The Apocalypse, Francis X. Gumerlock

TEAMS Commentary Series

Many commentaries on the Apocalypse were produced in the early Middle Ages. This book provides translations of two Apocalypse commentaries from the seventh and eighth centuries. On the Mysteries of the Apocalypse of John is part of a large one-volume "Reference Bible" composed about 750. Written probably by an Irish teacher residing in northern France, it answers difficulties arising from the biblical text. The Handbook on the Apocalypse of the Apostle John, attributed erroneously to Jerome and written before 767, contains brief moral and allegorical interpretations of particular words and phrases of the Apocalypse. The introduction highlights the unique …

The Consummation Of The Exodus: A Study Of The Exodus Motif In The Revelation, Philip S. Haugen May 1985

The Consummation Of The Exodus: A Study Of The Exodus Motif In The Revelation, Philip S. Haugen

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The study of the Exodus motif grew out of the author's curiosity concerning the clear reference to the Exodus in Revelation 15:3. The question which arose concerned the extent to which the Exodus motif is used in the Apocalypse, and its significance. Therefore, the purpose o this study is to examine and demonstrate the use of the Exodus motif in the Revelation.

The study will commence with a discussion in chapter one of typology and the unity of Scripture. Because the Exodus is a major source of Old Testament types, an attempt will be made in chapter one to illustrate …

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto Jun 1958

The Christology Of The Seven Letters In Revelation Chapters Two And Three, With Special Reference To Possible Relationships Between The Author's Self-Designations And The Subject Matter Of The Letters, Ewald Otto

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study does not attempt to add to the material on the history of the congregations or to the analyses of their graces and defects, zeal and lukewarmness. Rather, a portion of what: has been written was restudied from the standpoint: of the relationship between the self-designation3 and the contents of the letters against the backdrop of the Christology of the Apocalypse.

The biologist and the physicist must begin with certain assumption~. To claim otherwise reveals ignorance and vanity. The theologian, too, must begin somewhere. This study assumes that the Bible is the Word of God, that an inspiration without …

Syntactical Peculiarities In Revelation, Paul M. Bretscher Feb 1945

Syntactical Peculiarities In Revelation, Paul M. Bretscher

Concordia Theological Monthly

"I see his dialect and language not accurately conforming to Greek. I see him making use of idioms of foreign turn and here and there even tending to solecism." So wrote Dionysius Magnus.

Since the days of Dionysius Magnus, the style and language employed by the author of Revelation has been variously assessed. Among modem writers on the subject the opinions of Moulton, Swete, Benson, Debrunner, Charles, Howard, Robertson, Radermacher, and Lohr are particularly noteworthy.

Criticism And Evaluation Of The Book Of Revelation, Lorenz Blankenbuehler Jun 1943

Criticism And Evaluation Of The Book Of Revelation, Lorenz Blankenbuehler

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this treatise to get at the bottom of some of the early misconceptions and misinterpretations of the Apocalypse -- and by a positive approach endeavor to place the book in its rightful place of honor and esteem among the canonical books of the New Testament. May the Holy Spirit bless this work, and confirm the writer and his readers in the opinion of the early church fathers that this grand. book of comfort and consolation for the world weary Christian pilgrim was written by the Apostle St. John the Divine, by inspiration of the Holy …
