In response, it is not the intent of the following to address the philosophic skepticism so prevalent in modern biblical scholarship. Rather, the assumption which links such skepticism to the results of Formgeschichte will be called into question, namely, the assumption that the worldview of the first century was superstitious. One may legitimately ask whether the worldview of the first century was so enamored of the miraculous that a literary product of that time would of necessity produce miraculous deeds in praise of its hero and attribute them to him.
