In his De doctrina Christiana St. Augustine wrote: Certain scholars have rendered great service by providing the student of the Sacred Scriptures with interpretations of all Hebrew, Syrian, Egyptian, and other foreign expressions and names that are introduced without further explanation by the sacred writers. Eusebius through his historical investigations developing out of a concern for the divine books has also left us an indispensable tool. These men have done their work so that Christians need not search through many authors for information on some small point. But there is further need of someone with the proper qualifications to produce, …

The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh
The Doctrine Of Man In Genesis, Pyeng Seh Oh
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
It is, therefore, the fundamental teaching about man. in the Pre-Mosaic revelation that is dealt with in this thesis. This study will treat both individual man and a group of Men, viz., a society. It is plain from the previous explanation that this study is not limited by the traditional dogmatic division of Christian anthropology. It is a synthetic or systematic exegesis instead of the familiar consecutive exegesis, chapter by chapter, as presented in commentaries. This material will be collected under five cardinal themes on the doctrine of man in Genesis, with each theme displaying disparities and sim1larities or opinion …
The Parable Of The Unjust Manager In The Light Of Contemporary Economic Life, Erich Kiehl
The Parable Of The Unjust Manager In The Light Of Contemporary Economic Life, Erich Kiehl
Doctor of Theology Dissertation
The solution to the problem of the parable of the Unjust Manager lies in determining the possible provisions in the contract of the landowner with his manager. If the manager's contract was similar to those common to our western experience, then the manager's final act was one of larceny. However, the parable was spoken by Jesus, an Oriental, to hearers who were also Orientals and who lived in an Oriental setting. The solution lies in trying to determine as carefully and as closely as possible what the contractual arrangements between landowner and manager of that day were.
The Concept Of Chastisement In The Book Of Hebrews, Carl Lutz Jr
The Concept Of Chastisement In The Book Of Hebrews, Carl Lutz Jr
Bachelor of Divinity
As a result of personal contact with several cases in which the purpose and nature of Christian suffering was misinterpreted by the individual, one is led to study the Bible very carefully in order to offer all of the hope and comfort which God has placed into this Holy Book for His faithful followers. The present study is so constructed as to lead a person to discover the many ways in which he might offer consolation and encouragement to a person who is suffering some form of chastisement from God, specifically employing the Epistle to the Hebrews to the given …
Lutheran Free Conferences In America From 1856 To 1866, Edward L. Schneider
Lutheran Free Conferences In America From 1856 To 1866, Edward L. Schneider
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this study is to shed some light on the confessional experiences within the bodies which finally took part in the Lutheran Free Conferences in America in the decade beginning in 1856. The study has been carried on with the intent of determining to what extent doctrines formulated the climate of friendliness between confessional bodies.
The Terminology Of The Ark Of The Covenant, Kenneth K. Miller
The Terminology Of The Ark Of The Covenant, Kenneth K. Miller
Bachelor of Divinity
The problem under investigation is not a single problem, but multiple. It deals with the terminology connected with the Ark of the Covenant. There are some important technical terms that are either directly or indirectly connected with the Ark. During the course of Old Testament research in the last century these terms and the Ark itself have, for various reasons, acquired a great many connotations. The Ark has been explained as a fetish-box that contained a meteorite or a piece of stone from Mount Sinai, as a divine throne, as a container for sacred divination-stones, as a shrine of the …
John 20:16-17: The Ascenison Of Christ As The Prerequisite Of His Abiding Presence, Lowell Lubben
John 20:16-17: The Ascenison Of Christ As The Prerequisite Of His Abiding Presence, Lowell Lubben
Bachelor of Divinity
This paper proposes to investigate the appearance of Christ after His resurrection to Mary Magdalene, as it is recorded in the twentieth chapter of the Gospel according to St. John, verses 1 through 18. Attention is directed primarily and specifically to verses 16 and 17, which refer to Mary’s being prohibited to "touch" Christ and to the reason given for this prohibition, namely, that Christ had "not yet ascended."
The Ocassion And The Purpose Of The Escahatological Proclamation Of The Thessalonians Epistles Of Paul, Robert Joel Riedel
The Ocassion And The Purpose Of The Escahatological Proclamation Of The Thessalonians Epistles Of Paul, Robert Joel Riedel
Bachelor of Divinity
The special concern of this study, however, is the problems of eschatology which had arisen. They receive considerable prominence and are discussed in some detail. It seems that there were false ideas concerning the doctrine of the Second Coming prevalent in the congregation, and Paul wishes not only to counteract these ideas, but also to emphasize the final importance of this doctrine.
The Sermon On The Mount As A Part Of Jesus' Call To Repentance, James J. Johnson
The Sermon On The Mount As A Part Of Jesus' Call To Repentance, James J. Johnson
Bachelor of Divinity
A cursory glance at various expositions of the Sermon on the Mount, will show that there are as many interpretations of the Sermon as there are interpreters. Some men feel that the Sermon on the Mount is a list of practical rules for daily living which can easily be carried out by all right-thinking men. Still others have held that the Sermon is not meant for all Christians, but only for a few-those who went to maintain a more perfect station in life. Some have maintained that the Sermon is all Law; others see in it many elements of Gospel. …
Man's Attitude, By Nature, To Christ As Articulated In The Fourth Gospel, David Ralph Krampitz
Man's Attitude, By Nature, To Christ As Articulated In The Fourth Gospel, David Ralph Krampitz
Bachelor of Divinity
The purpose of this investigation is to determine, on the basis of the Gospel according to St. John, how man, by nature, reacts to Christ. This issue is by no means merely academic. Christ's testimony concerning His Gospel conflicts with at least two situations which exist in our "Christianized" society. For one thing, our Lord told His disciples that the world would hate and persecute them because of His Gospel. Yet, in America today, "Christianity" receives the approval of the majority of people. In the second place, Christ informed His disciples that He had chosen them, not vice versa. The …

The Pauline Concept Of The Body Of Christ And Its Significnace In The Literature Of The Ecumenical Movement, Raymond Schulze
The Pauline Concept Of The Body Of Christ And Its Significnace In The Literature Of The Ecumenical Movement, Raymond Schulze
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
The task of this study, however, is to move toward an understanding of one aspect of Paul's body theology. " Our concern is not to explain what Paul means by σῶμα nor even what he means by σῶμα τοβ χριοτοῦ, but to discover what he means when he calls the Church σῶμα and σῶμα τοβ χριοτοῦ.
This Do In Remeberance Of Me, Arno Klausmeier
This Do In Remeberance Of Me, Arno Klausmeier
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
This paper aims to indicate the importance of the background against which our Lord instituted the Sacrament of His Body and His Blood for a proper understanding of the meaning and intention of the words "This do in remembrance of Me." A formulation or approach to a doctrine of the Lord's Supper which proposes to be Biblical cannot be content merely to reiterate the Verba Testamenti in a conflated form and then propose to have exhausted the meaning of "this do". Nor can a formulation which all but ignores the total Sitz im Leben of the scriptural records fail to …
A Comparative Study Of Pauline And Johannine Conception Of Sin, Homer C. Snyder
A Comparative Study Of Pauline And Johannine Conception Of Sin, Homer C. Snyder
Western Evangelical Seminary Theses
The Bible as a whole establishes the doctrine of sin. The New Testament doctrine of sin is developed on the foundation of the Old Testament doctrine of sin. Paul and John speak particularly on the doctrine of sin as a whole. So a study of their doctrine of sin would contribute to a total Biblical understanding. The problem of this study is the Biblical doctrine of sin limited to the New Testament writers, John and Paul, as they speak of the doctrine of sin, in relation to the doctrine of sin as a whole. Since the problem concerns the doctrine …
Why The Kuriou In 1 Peter 1:25?, Martin H. Scharlemann
Why The Kuriou In 1 Peter 1:25?, Martin H. Scharlemann
Concordia Theological Monthly
In our day there is nothing sensational in the remark that the authors of our New Testament documents often quote the Septuagint version rather than the Hebrew text in their use of the Old Testament. In fact, as long ago as 1782 Randolph came to the conclusion that 119 of the 239 actual quotations from the Old Testament occurring in the New were taken from the Septuagint. This was almost 50 years before Doepke's Hermeneutik der neutestamentlichen Schriftsteller ( 1829) clearly demonstrated the extensive methodological agreements between New Testament authors and rabbinic writers, thereby laying the groundwork for our contemporary …
