The object of this study is to investigate the mission motif in the life and thought of the people of Israel in three different periods in the nation's history, namely, the early monarchical period, the exilic period, and the post-exilic period. This thesis is designed to investigate the use to which Rom. 16:17-20 has been put in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, particularly within the last thirty years. Discipline problems arose early in the church. A case of flagrant immorality at Corinth prompted Pau1 to counsel the congregation there to meet in solemn assembly and to “excommunicate” the offender. The purpose of this study is to examine the subject of discipline as treated in Paul’s letters, particularly the instance related in 1 Cor. 5:1-5, against the background of Qumran.
