Will And Grace: The Essence Of The Pelagian Debate, Steve Curtis Sep 2016

Will And Grace: The Essence Of The Pelagian Debate, Steve Curtis

Steve Curtis

The early centuries of the Christian church saw a number of clarifying councils and theological treatises directed at objective doctrines such as the triunity of God and the hypostatic nature of Christ. By the late fourth century, the discussions were becoming more subjective: to what extent does man possess a free will? What is the cause of sin? What are the theological implications involved in salvation, and to what extent does the grace of God hold sway? Such questions naturally led back to the very beginning of time and to the nature of Adam and the consequence of his sin …

From Theology To Praxis: The Quest For The Full Inclusion Of Women In Churches Of Christ, Jennifer H. Christy May 2015

From Theology To Praxis: The Quest For The Full Inclusion Of Women In Churches Of Christ, Jennifer H. Christy

Jennifer H Christy

From the earliest days of the movement’s history, Churches of Christ have been shaped by a literalist reading of the Bible that has privileged certain texts over others in the conversation surrounding the role of women in the life of the church. Patriarchal systems of thought and practice have dominated the conversation. Support from a few key texts has been used to establish the belief that women are created in subordination and submission to men, often resulting in the status of women being regarded as inferior and unequal to men. This manifests in a polity where women are limited, or …

Moving From Fad To Fundamentals: The Future Of The Evangelical Christian Adoption And Orphan Care Movement, David M. Smolin Jan 2015

Moving From Fad To Fundamentals: The Future Of The Evangelical Christian Adoption And Orphan Care Movement, David M. Smolin

David M. Smolin

Although the current evangelical Christian adoption and orphan care movement is less than ten years old, it has already attracted severe criticism. As an evangelical Christian and adoptive parent, I have been among the “inside critics” of the movement. The inside critique of the movement is distinctive in embracing the Christian presuppositions of the movement, while still offering objections to the theology, rhetoric, and practices associated with it.

Given the intensity and scope of my critiques, it may have been easy to misunderstand the intention as purely negative. To the contrary, however, my intention is ultimately constructive because I am …

The New Testament provides for all time marks an absolute teacher, even if have strictly historically, a teacher and a church willing to hear the Word of Life. Progress disciples from fishermen and publicans the Apostles and teacher of the world can be theoretized and implemented in an ordinary school. But all Christian schools the teaching is known and appreciated. Rethinking the Gospel values in a school that seems to have tot-gotten that Christ is the supreme Teacher is quite normal. Messiah, The Seed Of Abraham: Promise And Fullfilment, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

MESSIAH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SUBJECT OF THE OLD TESTAMENT. THE PROMISES OF THE MESSIAH'S ANCESTORS WERE VERY MANY AND, IN THE SAME TIME, VERY PROFOUND. ABRAHAM IS THE FIRST MAN WHEREOF GOD PROMISED TO BLESS THROUGH HIS SEED. THE TERM "SEED OF ABRAHAM" CAN BE PHYSICALLY UNDERSTOOD, HIGHLIGHTING A CERTAIN PERSON OR A GROUP OF PEOPLE, OR IT CAN BE SPIRITUALLY PERCEIVED, DESCRIBING MESSIAH. THIS ARTICLE INTENDS TO DESCRIBE BOTH SENSES OF THE TERM "SEED OF ABRAHAM", PROVING THAT THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLE OF ALL PROMISES TO ABRAHAM WAS TO SHOW MESSIAH WHO WILL BE THE INITIATOR AND THE …

“Hiv/Aids And The Bible In Tanzania: A Contextual Re-Reading Of 2 Samuel 13:1-14:33, Mussa Simom Muneja

It is arguably clear that the AIDS epidemic has infected and affected our world in radical ways. Although every sector, including Biblical Studies, has come to its ‘senses’, by realising the urgency to respond; there still appears to be inadequate contextual engagement with the biblical text to stimulate empowering and transformative readings of the Bible. This case study is aimed to contribute to scholarship by determining the extent to which the church, the academy and Persons with HIV have adhered to stigmatising interpretations. The theoretical framework used, was the reader response method as applied within the context of African theology …

Does It Really Matter? Choosing A Bible Translation For Use In Schools, Lorinda Bruce, Steven Thompson Jan 2013

Does It Really Matter? Choosing A Bible Translation For Use In Schools, Lorinda Bruce, Steven Thompson

Steven W Thompson

Due to the complexities of translation, no version of the Bible "tells it all." Each is a product of the methods and cultural setting of its translators. Which one is best for school and classroom? Digital Bibles for school use open new opportunities and present new challenges. This article addresses translation choice, and suggests strategies for making the best use of digital Bibles in schools.

Scripturalization And The Aaronide Dynasties, James W. Watts Jan 2013

Scripturalization And The Aaronide Dynasties, James W. Watts

James Watts

Priests claiming descent from Aaron controlled the high priesthood of temples in Jerusalem and on Mount Gerizim in the Second Temple period. These Aaronides were in a position to influence religious developments in this period, especially the scripturalization of the Torah. The priests’ dynastic claims were probably a significant factor in the elevation of the Pentateuch to scriptural status. This claim can be tested by correlating what little we know about the Aaronide dynasties with what little we know about the scripturalization of two different portions of the Hebrew Bible, the Pentateuch and Ezra-Nehemiah.

The Messianic Prophecy Concept In The Old Testament: Definition And Statistics, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor Dec 2012

The Messianic Prophecy Concept In The Old Testament: Definition And Statistics, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

This article wants to approach not only the prophecy from the Old Testament’s inside in general, but also the messianic prophecy in particularly. To reach this purpose, the article starts describing work as a minister in the Old Testament during the time of the Hebraic peregrine, one of Israel dynasty and then one of the prophets. Later, the article defines the concept of prophecy from the Old Testament’s inside, describing the importance and frequency wherewith appear the messianic prophecy in Hebraic history, because it’s known that any prophecy assumes not only the promise, but also achievement. Relic Texts, James Watts Jun 2012

Relic Texts, James Watts

James Watts

Religious traditions typically ritualize their scriptures in three dimensions. Other kinds of texts may be ritualized in one or two dimensions (e.g. the performative dimension of the scripts of plays or sheet music, the semantic dimension of national law codes), but the regular ritualization of a text in all three dimensions usually distinguishes it as a scripture or sacred text. There are, however, some texts or, more accurately, some specific copies of texts, that tend to be ritualized only in the iconic dimension, and scriptures feature prominently among them. I term such texts “relic books.” Relic books are writings that …

Exegetical Paper_Hebrews_10-26-31, Keith W. Burt Jan 2012

Exegetical Paper_Hebrews_10-26-31, Keith W. Burt

Keith w Burt

The warning passage of Hebrews 10:26-31 is one of five such passages in the book of Hebrews and has been considered by many the direst in its discussion of apostasy. These passages have been the focal point of significant divisive debate throughout church history. In this paper, while keeping with a "once saved-always saved" doctrinal belief, it will be shown that an objective exegesis, given pre-understandings within an evangelical cultural background and presuppositions developed through the influential preaching and teaching of many evangelical pastors, can arrive at the plain meaning of the text intended by the original author to the …

Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor Dec 2011

Differences Between The Water Baptism And The Moment Of Receiving The Holy Spirit, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

From the New Testamental’s point of view, there are some differences between the time of the water baptism and the time of receiving the Holy Spirit. Even if chronologically the two acts can be very close, we can always make a clear temporal distinction between them. Using the most relevant passages from Acts, this article intends to prove that in all cases the baptism with the Holy Spirit was a distinct experience from the water baptism. The article also describes tangentially the receiving of the Holy Spirit.

Baptism In Water: Its Foundation, Form And Formula, Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Caleb Otniel Traian Nechifor

Water baptism is the most common act of worship being carried out in any religious denomination. This article intends to demonstrate that Christian baptism did not occur from now here, but it is the result of an ascending process of purification rituals found in the Old Testament. Also, in the content of the article are presented other forms of baptism. Regarding the formula used in water baptism, the careful reader of the Bible, raises a legitimate question : Why did Jesus Christ command baptism to be done “in the name of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy …
