Isaiah's Burden Prophecies As Spirtual Formulas, Justin Brent Top Dec 2007

Isaiah's Burden Prophecies As Spirtual Formulas, Justin Brent Top

Theses and Dissertations

The Book of Mormon makes it clear that Isaiah's message is of great importance to the modern reader. In order to facilitate modern and personal spiritual application of Isaiah's writings, spiritual "formulas" or principles may be discovered or formulated. These formulas are statements of truth based on the prophet's writings that may be applied in multiple situations and time periods. Such formulas of truth offer valuable insighst across time. These formulas may be understood by analyzing the historical setting of the chapter(s) under review, and through critical examination of the text itself. These formulas provide a solid foundation upon which …

My Son, Listen To The Instruction Of Your Father : An Analysis Of How The Father’S Rhetoric In Proverbs 1-7 Continues And Climaxes In Proverbs 8-9, Samuel Hsiao-Yung Liu

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Liu, Hsiao-Yung (Samuel) "My Son, Listen to the Instruction of Your Father: An Analysis of How the Father Rhetoric in Proverbs 1-7 Continues and Climaxes in Proverbs 8-9." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007. 200 pp.

This dissertation proposes the thesis that the father's rhetoric in Prov 1-7 continues and climaxes in Prov 8-9, thus supporting the unity of Prov 1-9. Although diverse voices and genres make the reading of Prov 1-9 difficult, there still exists the unifying perspective of the implied speaker in the text, which is the father's rhetoric,

Therefore, assuming that one single author or editor completed the …

Second Baptism And Baptism In Blood As Motifs In The Martyrdom And Patristic Literature Of The Second-Fourth-Centuries A.D., Casey Crosby Jul 2007

Second Baptism And Baptism In Blood As Motifs In The Martyrdom And Patristic Literature Of The Second-Fourth-Centuries A.D., Casey Crosby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the origin of the terms second baptism and baptism in blood and how these terms and the concepts associated with them affected the baptismal theology of the Patristic church. The research showed that these topoi became motifs in specific martyrdom literature (passions) and Patristic writings of the second-fourth centuries and were probably invented by Tertullian. The authors examined used these terms in their writings to encourage and exhort those facing persecution to remain faithful-even to the point of death. Second baptism and baptism in blood represented the concept that death in a martyrdom context perfected the faith …

A Household To Be Gathered-The Anointing At Bethany And The Day Of Jesus' Death In The Gospel According To John, Jonathan A. Blanke May 2007

A Household To Be Gathered-The Anointing At Bethany And The Day Of Jesus' Death In The Gospel According To John, Jonathan A. Blanke

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Blanke, Jonathan A. "A Household to Be Gathered: The Anointing at Bethany and the Day of Jesus' Death in the Gospel according to John." Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2007.224 pp.

This dissertation focuses on the theological significance of the anointing at Bethany in the Fourth Gospel and its relationship to the passion and death of Jesus. The dissertation responds to the conclusion of much twentieth-century scholarship that John 12:1-7 is essentially meaningful as a text that evolved from an oral tradition comparable to other anointings of Jesus with perfume by unnamed women in the Synoptic Gospels. It supplements this prior …

Sleep As Metaphor In Paul- Dying And Living In The Promise Of The Parousia, Nadine Grayl Feb 2007

Sleep As Metaphor In Paul- Dying And Living In The Promise Of The Parousia, Nadine Grayl

Master of Art Theology Thesis

This project began with a curiosity for "life after death" matters when I was in confirmation class at a small South Jersey Lutheran church. My mother wanted to know if believers would be with Jesus as soon as they died, so I asked the pastor this and more. It was not until almost ten years later when I attended the 1999 Theological Symposium at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO, as an undergraduate deaconess student from Concordia University, River Forest, IL, that I learned what really happens to believers when they die-and even if they don't. I am ever grateful …

A Scriptural And Philosophical Evaluation Of The Open Model Of God As An Ontological Necessity And Its Compatibility With Evangelical Theology, Richard Garrett Ham Jr. Jan 2007

A Scriptural And Philosophical Evaluation Of The Open Model Of God As An Ontological Necessity And Its Compatibility With Evangelical Theology, Richard Garrett Ham Jr.

Honors Theses

The Christian movement known as evangelicalism possesses a long and complex history or theological and practical development and expression. Through the years, the term evangelical has carried a wide range of meanings. While modern day evangelicalism is by no means a monolithic movement, its foundation across the spectrum lies in its affirmation of three major theological principles: "(1) the complete reliability and final authority of Scripture in matters of faith and practice; (2) the necessity of a personal faith in Jesus Christ ... ; and (3) the urgency of seeking actively the conversion of sinners to Christ." The first theological …

The So-Called Mixed Text: An Examination Of The Non-Alexandrian And Non-Byzantine Text-Type In The Catholic Epistles, Clinton S. Baldwin Jan 2007

The So-Called Mixed Text: An Examination Of The Non-Alexandrian And Non-Byzantine Text-Type In The Catholic Epistles, Clinton S. Baldwin

Dissertations

Problem. Since the eighteenth century, textual scholars have been grouping New Testament Greek manuscripts into groups called text-types in order to evaluate the thousands of variant readings found in these manuscripts. These text-types form the basis for determining the earliest form of the text--the primary goal of New Testament Textual Criticism. Almost all textual critics recognize three main text types: Alexandrian, Western, and Byzantine. However, in recent times, W. Larry Richards and his followers identified a "mixed text-type" in six books of the Catholic Epistles that is distinguishable from the already established text-types. This text-type if supported by empirical investigation …

Hospitality Versus Patronage: An Investigation Of Social Dynamics In The Third Epistle Of John, Igor Lorencin Jan 2007

Hospitality Versus Patronage: An Investigation Of Social Dynamics In The Third Epistle Of John, Igor Lorencin

Dissertations

Problem. This investigation focuses on social dynamics in the third epistle of John. In the context of 3 John hospitality and patronage seem to be opposed as two non-compatible models of behavior. In what sense they are different and what makes them non compatible in a church setting is the main focus of this research.

Method. A social approach is utilized in this investigation for the purpose of understanding the social system, values, and circumstances that shaped the events of 3 John. I first collect evidence to explain the ancient customs of hospitality and patronage in order to create a …

A Comparison Of The Adult Bible Study Guide Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church And A Prototype Guide Designed To Promote Spiritual Growth, Lyndelle Brower Chiomenti Jan 2007

A Comparison Of The Adult Bible Study Guide Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Church And A Prototype Guide Designed To Promote Spiritual Growth, Lyndelle Brower Chiomenti

Dissertations

Problem. Despite the Adult Bible Study Guide's potential for promoting Christian spirituality among Seventh-day Adventist Church members, no studies have investigated its impact on the spirituality of its users. Beginning as a way to disseminate the unique biblical doctrines of thefledgling Church, the Guide remains largely expository and apologetic in nature, often neglecting the use of methods and spiritual disciplines which promote spirituality.

Method. Based on the same topic as the regular Guide for second quarter, 2005, an Adult Bible Study Guide using Kolb's learning cycle and learning styles was developed to promote Christian spiritual growth. The effect both Guides …

Dissertations

Problem addressed. The function of loipos in the Apocalypse is the focus of this research.
