Facing The Gap: Educational Equity In Marin County, Lynn Sondag, Julia Van Der Ryn
Facing The Gap: Educational Equity In Marin County, Lynn Sondag, Julia Van Der Ryn
Julia van der Ryn
Facing the Gap: It is the right of all people to have access to a full and dynamic education. In Marin County, one of the most affluent counties in the country, the educational inequities are still stark. Disenfranchised youth are not seen beyond the stereotypes and the geographic barriers that divide them and their communities from educational opportunities that can stop cycles of poverty and injustice.

The Burgos Tapestry: Medieval Theatre And Visual Experience, Nathalie Rochel Frch '11
The Burgos Tapestry: Medieval Theatre And Visual Experience, Nathalie Rochel Frch '11
The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal
In the field of art history, the medium of tapestry has only recently begun to gain attention as its own significant art form. This paper examines the possible relationship between the Burgos Tapestry, recently on view at The Cloisters after a thirty-year conservation, and medieval theatre. The compositional and stylistic forms of the tapestry may have been influenced by productions of medieval mystery plays, which through analysis can help provide a greater understanding of the medieval cultural mindset, the possible artistic decisions behind maintaining medieval pictorial traditions into the early sixteenth century, and the medieval viewer’s experience when looking at …

A Thematic Analysis Of The Material Culture Of Artwork Using Knit As An Artistic Medium, Rebecca Elaine Schuiling
A Thematic Analysis Of The Material Culture Of Artwork Using Knit As An Artistic Medium, Rebecca Elaine Schuiling
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study provides insight and understanding into the artists who use knit as a medium to create art. In a historical context, knitting has had very specific purposes. Gradually, knits and knitting played an important role in a political sense at various points in history. Handcrafts in general surface as the focal point in several art movements. Knitting was included in only scant amounts within these art movements. The reasons for this are explored and illuminated in this thesis. I provide specific examples of contemporary artists who utilize knit materials as a medium, focusing on four pieces of artwork: City …
Artistic And Cultural Practices In Urban Spaces: Law, Justice, Contestation, Matilda Arvidsson, Peter Bengtsen
Artistic And Cultural Practices In Urban Spaces: Law, Justice, Contestation, Matilda Arvidsson, Peter Bengtsen
Dr Matilda Arvidsson
For the 2013 Critical Legal Conference, we sent out a call for papers which dealt with different perspectives on artistic and cultural practices in the transitional and contested territory of urban public space. With nearly 50 abstracts received from all over the world, the response to our call was overwhelming. Ethnographers, sociologists, art historians, architects, artists, and cultural entrepreneurs wanted to engage with law. Interestingly, judging from the abstracts, legal scholars seemed less concerned with engaging in a discussion of artistic expressions, as few responded to the call. Departing from this experience we seek to approach the urban space, art …
Between The Field And The Museum: The Benedict Collection Of Bagobo Abaca Ikat Textiles, Cherubim A. Quizon
Between The Field And The Museum: The Benedict Collection Of Bagobo Abaca Ikat Textiles, Cherubim A. Quizon
Cherubim A Quizon
Any researcher working on vintage textiles and clothing from the Philippines collected during the early years of the American colonial period is likely to encounter the following informative catalogue entries: "From headhunters," or "From chiefs attire." Since the Bagobo people of southern Mindanao were also once famous for the practice of human sacrifice, the cloth, weaponry and ornament of these people were of high anecdotal value for collectors.
By contrast, a typical entry in the Bagobo textile collection of Laura Watson Benedict in this museum, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH), circa 1910 reads: "Woven by Antap [who specializes …

Distant vestiges of memory incite my art making. By examining my biographical past through various scopes, I can extract key memory perceptions for further investigation.
In my work, I physically construct models of memories to correlate to the mental process of memory reconstruction. The very nature of memory is devoid of a logical progression or stability. Imagery loses clarity, moving in and out of our consciousness. The memories often become muddled creating passages that can be fleshed out by intuitive impulses. Therefore, the structure is built to contain the fleeting memories so I can extract meaning from them. Individually crafting …

It is human nature to want to live in an ordered world and to organize our lives through plans and rules. We tend to find security in routines and like creatures of habit we rarely stray outside of our comfort zones.
My work deals with creating a sense of dislocation to take our statically ordered worlds and contort them slightly. The cows and organic shapes in my paintings are supposed to elicit the feeling of a connection with the viewer. The fences, rock walls, and other physical barriers are a formal choice to present this dislocation. Metaphorically, the barriers in …

Language is the most systemized and direct method of human expression; it is the medium by which groups and individuals convey, communicate and understand. We most directly and effectively reveal our identity through sharing language with others.
A similar situation exists in the expressive function of visual imagery. Much of my work abstracts and interprets the nature of objective reality, notably in visual relationships between space, lines and edges. I think of my artworks as extensions of a distinct visual language, and the vocabulary by which I abstract and compose is communicated in a systemized manner similar to language forms. …

Ballet is my passion. Through the movements of dance, my body and mind can become one. In this state, the actions are performed with muscle memory; there is almost a mindlessness that all athletes have to maintain in order to be able to lose themselves to movement.
My project allows me to fully understand what goes on in this semi-mindless state, and allows me to analyze it intellectually outside the arena of performance. I use a high-speed camera to capture and isolate the steps involved in each movement. I can use the images to study the particular muscles and motions …

In my work, I explore a topic that generates a never-ending series of questions for me: my faith. People hold so many various personal beliefs according to their faith. For one to believe so strongly in something and be able to place all of their trust in their faith when they have no certainty is fascinating. One message that I connect with immensely in my faith was delivered to me through a song called “On Eagles’ Wings.” This song resonates with me because it reminds me that even though unexpected things happen in life, God is always watching over and …

My bodies of work are mental stepping-stones towards an intrapersonal discovery. I am in pursuit of understanding the seemingly endless psychological chaos unraveling inside my mind. These images are highly personal conceptual representations that aim to demonstrate the strains of separation anxiety, and the physical and psychological changes of pregnancy. They are abstract enough to encourage individual interpretation, while still allowing the viewer access to the window of my mind and body. By choosing and combining images that are individually strong, I am able to create pieces that are emotionally complex and powerful.

Every place around the world that is visible to us fits within a system. In my work I use elements of landscape and architecture as starting points in the project of mapping space. I see all the components of the external world installed together like a three-dimensional puzzle. In analyzing the world, I am trying to simplify it into its essential parts and then re-complicate it through formal and material choices in my work. I take inputs from the natural world and transform them into a new fragmented surface of abstract shapes, textures, and mysterious breaks in perspectives.
I intend …
One Face, Blair Rohan
One Face, Blair Rohan

Faces are the most recognizable part of the human body. With the exception of identical twins, no two people have the same face. But while we all have unique features, there are universally common characteristics of the human face. After all, everyone has a nose, mouth, and eyes. In my work, I want to emphasize that when completely different faces are superimposed, they can form one coherent face. By using short brushstrokes and different colors for each portrait, I am able to make all the features on the face of four different portraits become one facial appearance. The four different …

Throughout my studies of photojournalism, I have developed a strong interest in documentary photography. Avalanche Vocals contains street photographs of people I happened upon by chance. These images were created while I was living in Italy and France this past fall. As a foreigner to the lands, I wanted to understand the identity of the native people. I found that much like the United States, France and Italy have a collage of identities and cultures. As a result, I decided to use street photography as a method of understanding the concept of individual identity. I found that the identity of …

Shaping This Space Between Us: Using A Reflexive Journaling Process To Explore The Complex And Malleable Space In Which Identity Exists, Lina Mahusain
Theses and Dissertations
While some parts of identity remain constant throughout one’s life, many aspects of a person’s identity are subject to rapid and constant change and negotiation. Using theories regarding the role possessions play in the construction, reinforcement, and manifestation of a person’s identity, this thesis project explores the potential to facilitate meaningful insights and awareness into one’s own identity. This will be achieved by designing a reflexive journaling process. A qualitative evaluation of this prototype journal process used by a pilot group of young creative individuals will generate an assessment of the proposed process

Art And Symbolism: The Technique Of Applying Hidden Meaning And Communicating Specific Ideas Through Art, Andrea C. Macbean
Art And Symbolism: The Technique Of Applying Hidden Meaning And Communicating Specific Ideas Through Art, Andrea C. Macbean
Senior Honors Theses
Symbolism is an artistic style frequently used in the arts. Through the course of art history, it was its own artistic movement as well. The incorporation of specific symbols, shapes, colors, or identifiable images communicates to the viewer an intended message or statement. Frequently, symbolism appears to be hidden or initially unperceived by the intended audience. In some works, symbolism is so abstract that it needs explanation or clarification to be understood completely by the viewer. This thesis will analyze a few techniques of symbolism that can be incorporated in a work of art to communicate truth, entice thought, point …

The Contribution To And Affect Of Design And Architecture On Health & Activity Promotion (H&Ap) In The Workplace, Krystal L. Schumacher
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Expanding the research and awareness on the contribution to and affect of design and architecture on health and activity promotion in the workplace (h&ap) is essential in moving forward in the design of working environments. As humans, we spend the majority of our time indoors, for an average American adult he or she spends the majority of the day in a working environment. The impact that our spaces have is much deeper than the aesthetic. Our environments can depict how we act, feel and operate based on the design of our surroundings. Through this research, the goal was to study …

Product Design uses a human-centered process to develop solutions that solve unmet user needs. Because of the sequential nature of this activity, final designs are often presented in printed process books or digital slideshows, which visually communicate the development of the solution from start to finish rather than focusing just on the final result. Storytelling is a key element to consider when creating these process books in order to communicate the design solution as well as where it came from. An alternative to these presentations is the use of short videos, which offer the advantage of communicating the design process …

Representation And Appropriation In Guamán Poma De Ayala, Julio Ortega, Philip Debenshire
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
By discussing the cultural role of iconography, this article explores the likely source of representations in Felipe Guaman Pomade Ayala's The First New Chronicle and Good Government. His process of appropriation serves as a model of the new Andean cultural production by showcasing how emblematic allegories have been used in Latin America to illustrate Colonial manuscripts as well as national emblems and public art.
