Maternal Subjectivity In Painting: A Response To The Idealization Of Artists And Mothers, Heather Lea Reid
Maternal Subjectivity In Painting: A Response To The Idealization Of Artists And Mothers, Heather Lea Reid
Master of Humanities Capstone Projects
The focus of this project thesis is maternal subjectivity in contemporary art. Despite the embedded theme of mother and child in the history of Western art, the subject of children and motherhood has become taboo. Likewise, a stigma exists in the art world about mothers being artists. This thesis explains the historical context that created the current art world paradigmone that still embraces romantic notions of who can be an artist, based on limiting traditional ideas of "greatness" or "genius." Such a model suppresses the voice of the outsider. This essay examines the mother as an outsider in artmaking by …

Storie Of The Past: Learning The Legacy Of Emmet Gowin, Megan Hague, Tracy Longley-Cook
Storie Of The Past: Learning The Legacy Of Emmet Gowin, Megan Hague, Tracy Longley-Cook
Explorations – The Journal of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity at Wright State
The process of producing a documentary film about the legacy of Emmet Gowin is much like the process, I imagine, of researching and discovering the biographical history of a prominent figure in art. Unlike most documentary films I have made, which largely focus on what is happening presently in the lives of the individuals I am documenting, the Emmet Gowin project has been one fueled by memories of the past. This nostalgic process of reminiscing has created a very unique and unfamiliar opportunity in documentary filmmaking for me, the approach being greatly dependent on stories of the past which in …

Art and Art History Faculty Publications
A significant number of reasoned and documented projections indicate that two-year associate degree-granting institutions will play an increasing role in the preparation of students who continue and obtain baccalaureate degrees. The U.S. population is growing, but few new institutions are being built. Many individuals must obtain their collegiate education close to home. Economic pressures and credit-hour caps are focusing states and localities on articulation agreements and curricular continuity. This session will explore these issues as a basis for presenting and considering what administrators should know and think about as local decision-making occurs.

IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the why …

Holponiyochi: Contemporary Native American Sculpture, Wright State University Art Galleries
Exhibition and Program Catalogs
Nine artists participating in this exhibition share a concern with how practices of visual representation work to construct individual and collective identity. They examine and then reformulate familiar codes of visual culture, turning established conventions of visual representation against themselves. In highly sophisticated and nuanced critical commentary, they explore how both individual and group identities are shaped in and by one's cultural environment. At the same time, they recognize that limiting understanding can be an equally powerful influence in the shaping of one's sense of self and community.
