The Value And Impact Of Stakeholder Networks In Exploring The Complexity Of Government Public Services: A Case Study Of Stray Dog Population Management, Mei-Ju Chou, Hsien-Hui Tang Oct 2023

The Value And Impact Of Stakeholder Networks In Exploring The Complexity Of Government Public Services: A Case Study Of Stray Dog Population Management, Mei-Ju Chou, Hsien-Hui Tang

IASDR Conference Series

The social issue of stray dogs in Taiwan has been increasingly severe. Despite the substantial annual investments in funding and resources by the government, little progress has been made in resolving this problem. The difficulty stems from the dynamic complexity of the issues among stakeholders in the service system. The research problem is: How can complex social problems be analyzed through stakeholders? The research method is a case study of the "Stray Dog Population Management," and system dynamics is employed to demonstrate the complex problems. The research objectives are: (1) to construct a service ecosystem using the data of a …

Values Arising From Participatory Inclusive Design In A Complex Process, Stella Boess, Floris Jansen Jun 2022

Values Arising From Participatory Inclusive Design In A Complex Process, Stella Boess, Floris Jansen

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper addresses inclusive design in a situation of complexity and how to improve it. The focus is on the inclusive design of a complex process and its tools, which is increasingly an issue in systemic design challenges. The current situation of climate change means we need to work on sustainability and inclusion at the same time. The paper presents a case study of an energetic renovation process and the stakeholders’ activities and views in it. In a research-through-design process, the paper traces the possibilities to intervene in the process with communication tools to increase inclusivity of both process and …

Inclusive Design: Perspectives, Guidance, And Reflections, Hua Dong, Farnaz Nickpour, Chris Mcginley Jun 2022

Inclusive Design: Perspectives, Guidance, And Reflections, Hua Dong, Farnaz Nickpour, Chris Mcginley

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This is the introduction to the papers of the Inclusive Design Practice track, DRS2022. The 11 papers were selected from 22 initial submissions for the ‘Inclusive design practice’ and ‘design research for healthy ageing’ tracks. They covered a range of topics relating to inclusive design, so we combined them into one track to give the audience a broad overview. The papers were classified into three groups: perspectives, guidance, and reflections. They demonstrated scholars’ and practitioners’ interpretation of inclusive design in different contexts, knowledge about design principles and good practice, and critical reflection on history, methodology and practice.

Design, One Piece Of The Puzzle: A Conceptual And Practical Perspective On Transdisciplinary Design, Mieke Van Der Bijl-Brouwer Jun 2022

Design, One Piece Of The Puzzle: A Conceptual And Practical Perspective On Transdisciplinary Design, Mieke Van Der Bijl-Brouwer

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Transdisciplinary research is claimed to be essential in tackling today’s complex societal challenges. Transdisciplinarity includes collaboration and integration across academic disciplines, non-academic ways of knowing, and the ‘real world’ of citizens, professionals and other stakeholders. Design can contribute to transdisciplinarity by framing complex challenges, integrating knowledge towards synthesizing solutions, and providing participatory practices to engage with the real world. However, for design to be successful in transdisciplinary research contexts, a better understanding of transdisciplinarity and design is required. In this paper I present a conceptual and practical perspective on transdisciplinary de-sign. I show how design relates to three different conceptions …

Activity Theory As A Framework For Understanding Framing Complexity Of Design Projects, Virginie Tessier, Mithra Zahedi Jun 2022

Activity Theory As A Framework For Understanding Framing Complexity Of Design Projects, Virginie Tessier, Mithra Zahedi

DRS Biennial Conference Series

With the growing complexity of design projects, framing is expanding in scope. We question how to describe and analyse the varied elements contributing to framing and aim at better understanding the complexity of framing design projects through activity awareness. Activity theory was mobilized as a Research through Design framework in a team of students to find answers to the question. First, the team mapped and reflected upon their project’s process over fifteen weeks. They then participated in the analysis of the collected data highlighting the contextual tensions of their experience. Their interpretation unveils the tensions emerging between the project’s central …

Systemic Design's Guidelines To Implement Organizational Change, Caterina Rosini, Silvia Barbero Jun 2022

Systemic Design's Guidelines To Implement Organizational Change, Caterina Rosini, Silvia Barbero

DRS Biennial Conference Series

: In the future, organisations must face sudden changes and increase competitiveness. Firms need to have resources and competencies to set a strategic advantage in the business context to survive. This paper describes two management models used to define strategy and implement benefits for the firm and compares them with a systemic framework and the Systemic Design Approach. The comparison highlights the necessity to analyse organisations considering their complexity in terms of resources and interactions between spheres and roles. This evidence led us to sustain that Systemic Design can provide a better approach to organisational complexity and could be able …

Counter-Framing Design: Politics Of The 'New Normal', Sharon Prendeville, Pandora Syperek Aug 2021

Counter-Framing Design: Politics Of The 'New Normal', Sharon Prendeville, Pandora Syperek

Nordes Conference Series

In this paper, we introduce the concept of counterframes in relation to discourses of sustainability, and elaborate on it in correspondence with participatory design practices. We present our analysis through the lens of the ‘new normal’ in the wake of the pandemic, to demonstrate and unpack the complex and conflictual nature of emergent frames and counter-frame debates, evident within the field of sustainability. The paper draws on participatory activities and interviews with social movements and grassroots organisations. We present initial reflections on the ways in which design can productively engage with and address counter-frames, as they both fill in and …
