Perspective On South Dakota Women In Fine And Traditional Arts, Leda Cempellin

Leda Cempellin

The steady increase of women’s contribution to the visual arts in South Dakota, especially in recent decades, makes it impossible to celebrate all the individual accomplishments in the space of a chapter. Therefore, the following sections will limit the discourse to a choice of a few significant patterns of contribution to the arts and crafts in South Dakota. To begin, an historical overview of Lakota and European immigrant arts and influence are discussed, including women’s key influences on arts education in the state. Then, the expansion of traditional arts through NEA apprenticeship programming is described through the work of current …

Multiples In Late Modern Sculpture: Influences Within And Beyond Daniel Spoerri’S 1959 Edition Mat, Leda Cempellin

Leda Cempellin

The first Edition mat was founded by Daniel Spoerri in 1959 and recreated in collaboration with Karl Gerstner in 1964 and 1965, with a special Edition mat mot the same year. Consisting of sculptures that change optically, electrically, or through the audience’s physical interventions, this series brought in an innovative idea of multiplication through movement. The potential of mat sculptures for configuration changes within the continuity of their structure in space sets them apart from serial twodimensional works, where any change in the gestalt requires the production of a new copy. This paper reconstructs the genesis of the Edition mat …

Embodying Art And Art History: An Experiment With A Class Video Happening For The Series 'Access Denied', Leda Cempellin

Leda Cempellin

A book written in a foreign language and migrated to the US along with its author, an art historian, finds a new communicative dimension by becoming a ready-made for art making purposes. Starting with an introduction explaining the genesis of the collaborative project Access Denied, this article focuses on one of the series’ artworks, namely a video-happening, by exploring its genesis, development, and outcomes. Staged during the day of finals in an advanced art history seminar, the experiment provided an embodied artistic experience and some reflections on art history course content in the debate that followed. The video happening became …
