This catalog was published on the occasion of the Art Department's 2019 Senior Exhibition, May 9 - May 2 at the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine.

Seniors participating in the 2018-19 Studio Art Capstone, coordinated by Professor Garry Mitchell, spent the year reflecting on their art in conversation with their peers and guest critics. During the spring of 2019 each of them created a final body of work and an artist statement that places words in dialogue with their material practices. The Art Department is proud of the unique partnership this catalog represents. Seniors participating in the 2017-18 studio capstone seminar, coordinated by Professor Bradley Borthwick, crafted artist statements illustrated by their artworks. Art history students taught by Professor Daniel Harkett interviewed the artists about their studio practices and responded to their work in creative texts. This catalog was published on the occasion of the Art Department’s 2017 Senior Exhibition, May 4-22 at the Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, Maine.

This catalog is the first publication to accompany the Senior Exhibition at Colby College; it represents a unique collaboration among students and faculty, studio artists and art historians. If African Americans heavily influenced the development of rock & roll as a musical genre, why do we picture rock stars as white men with guitars? In this project I examine, with a particular focus on race, how the the visual culture surrounding rock music evolved to where it is today. To do this, I performed a close visual analysis of Rolling Stone Magazine covers from 1967-1980. In this presentation I illustrate Rolling Stone's trend of featuring 'white negroes' on their covers, which allowed the magazine to use the selling power of a white person's face while retaining the attractiveness, …

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

The goal of this paper is to investigate how the Untied States federal government, specifically through the National Endowment for the Arts, or NEA, has acted in the position of an arts patron in the past few decades. Specifically, this paper will focus on the past decade and a half since the 'arts crisis' of the late 1980s and the social and political backlash against the art community in the 1990s, which was only against ‘offensive’ art that was seen as morally and culturally corruptive.
