Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 379. A reel-to-reel audiotape recording of a program titled “Documents in Sound: A Sample in Folk Arts,” which was sponsored by the Barren River Regional Arts Council with funds from the Kentucky Folklife Foundation. According to the tape summary, the program includes five separate features, which can be played as individual vignettes or as a full 29-minute program. Features include traditional artists and cover topics such as woodworking, broom making, basket making, weaving, and drawn work.

The Loving Of The Game: A Study Of Basketry In The Mammoth Cave Area, Denis O. Kiely

The production and marketing of baskets in the Mammoth Cave area of Kentucky from 1880 to the present is observed in light of the cultural, technical, aesthetic, ad traditional aspects involved. The process of making a white oak ribbed basket is documented, as well as the technical and aesthetic variables from which the basket maker renders his product. The changing role of social organization and communication in the production and marketing of a traditional craft objects is also considered.

A set of handwritten notes copied from the Reading Gazette, transcribed by Alfred L. Shoemaker, originally dated from March 23 to April 6, 1878. Within, excerpts from accounts of public sales detail a basket maker's wares, food and drink, and the cries of hucksters selling their products.
