In his 1795 essay on perpetual peace, Kant points out that in political systems where power rests with the people and their representatives, “the consent of the citizens is required to decide whether or not war is to be declared” (Kant 1991: 100). In theory, the necessity of obtaining the consent of citizens should help stave off unwarranted uses of the military because, as Kant explains, “it is very natural that they [the citizens] will have great hesitation in embarking on so dangerous an enterprise” (Kant 1991: 100). Discursive Constructions Of Global War And Terror, Adam Hodges

In this chapter, I examine the dialogic connections involved in the global interchange of ideas about terrorism and the ‘war on terror.’ Discourse moves across national boundaries in a manner that shapes global relations and actions, and reshapes the dialogue that takes place within local contexts. To explore these processes, I discuss three contexts in detail. In the first, I examine recent work by Zala Volcic and Karmen Erjavec on the appropriation of the Bush administration’s ‘war on terror’ discourse by Serbian intellectuals (Volcic and Erjavec 2007, Erjavec and Volcic 2007). The Dialogic Emergence Of 'Truth' In Politics: Reproduction And Subversion Of The 'War On Terror' Discourse, Adam Hodges

Truth claims in political discourse are implicated in a dialogic process whereby political actors "assimilate, rework, and re-accentuate" prior discourse (Bakhtin 1986:89). While political actors themselves may view truth as an object to be discovered, I argue that discourse analysts are best served by viewing truth as an emergent property of this dialogic process. In this paper, I examine how intertextual connections are integral to both the reproduction and subversion of established truth claims (such as the claim that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction). The Politics Of Recontextualization: Discursive Competition Over Claims Of Iranian Involvement In Iraq, Adam Hodges

The representation of issues, especially those that are highly contested or ambiguous, is an ongoing process always subject to challenge and new re-presentations. This article explores the discursive competition between journalists and White House officials over the recontextualization of words spoken by General Peter Pace, which seemingly cast doubt on White House claims of Iranian involvement in Iraq. Pace's words, along with those spoken by White House Press Secretary Tony Snow and President George W. Bush in their appearances before the press, enter into a web of intertextual connections involved in the contestation over the `truth' of the matter. The …

Introduction: Discourse, War And Terrorism, Adam Hodges, Chad Nilep

Discourse since September 11, 2001 has constrained and shaped public discussion and debate surrounding terrorism worldwide. Social actors in the Americas, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and elsewhere employ the language of the “war on terror” to explain, react to, justify and understand a broad range of political, economic and social phenomena. As outlined in this introductory chapter, this volume explores the discursive production of identities, the shaping of ideologies, and the formation of collective understandings in response to 9/11 in the United States and around the world.

The Political Economy Of Truth In The 'War On Terror' Discourse: Competing Visions Of An Iraq/Al Qaeda Connection, Adam Hodges

The textual analysis in this paper examines an interview with Vice-President Dick Cheney by Gloria Borger on CNBC’s 2004 Capital Report. The interview took place on 17 June 2004, the day after the 9/11 Commission released Staff Statement No. 15, a twelve page preliminary report that concluded no ‘‘collaborative relationship’’ existed between Iraq and al-Qaeda. The aim of the analysis is to show how the struggle over ‘‘truth’’ unfolds in micro-level discursive interaction and to underscore the way this process is embedded within and contributes to the circulation of truth claims associated with the macro-level War on Terror Discourse (WoTD).

A Corpus Study On The Item-Based Nature Of Early Grammar Acquisition., Adam Hodges, Valerie Krugler, Deborah Law

This paper explores the item-based nature of child language acquisition by examining data from the CHILDES database (MacWhinney 2000). Two studies are explicated: the first uses pooled data from several children, and the second follows a single child longitudinally. The results show that the learning of the complex construction consisting of a main clause followed by an infinitival compliment, e.g. I want to play, center around a single verb, want, even though other candidate verbs exist in the children’s vocabulary. We provide empirical evidence to show that children initially learn grammar via item-based units and gradually break down complex constructions …
