Filming Dance: Embodied Syntax In Sasha Waltz’S ‘S’, Helen A. Fielding Jan 2015

Filming Dance: Embodied Syntax In Sasha Waltz’S ‘S’, Helen A. Fielding

Helen A Fielding

This paper brings Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological approach to Sasha Waltz’s dance film S, which focuses on the relation between sexuality and language. Maintaining that movement in cinema takes place in the viewers and not the film, the paper considers how the visual can be deepened to include the ways we move and are moved. Saussure’s insights into language are brought to the sensible, which is here understood in terms of divergences from norms. Though film would seem to privilege vision, viewing this film helps to elucidate Merleau-Ponty’s claim that a film succeeds when it engages the viewer’s embodied understanding, and shifts …

Cultivating Perception: Phenomenological Encounters With Artworks, Helen A. Fielding Jan 2015

Cultivating Perception: Phenomenological Encounters With Artworks, Helen A. Fielding

Helen A Fielding

Phenomenally strong artworks have the potential to anchor us in the world and to cultivate our perception. For the most part, we barely notice the world around us, as we are too often elsewhere, texting, coordinating schedules, planning ahead, navigating what needs to be done. This is the level of our age that shapes the ways we encounter the world and others. In such a world it is no wonder we no longer trust our senses. But as feminists have long argued, grounding our thinking in embodied experience opens it up to difference and helps us to resist the colonization …

FOREWARD: GARDENS OF JUSTICE

Matilda Arvidsson, Merima Bruncevic, Leila Brannstrom, Leif Dahlberg

Our Gardens of Justice special themed issue of the Australian Feminist Law Journal grew out of the 2012 Critical Legal Conference in Stockholm and its theme of Gardens of Justice, a conference organised by Matilda Arvidsson, Merima Bruncevic, Leila Brannstrom and Leif Dahlberg. We issued a Call for Papers early in 2013 in which several conference theme questions were repeated. We called for papers devoted to thinking about law and justice as a physical as well as a social environment. The theme suggested a plurality of justice gardens …

Stasis In Moltmann E Schmitt, Pier Giuseppe Monateri Dec 2013

Stasis In Moltmann E Schmitt, Pier Giuseppe Monateri

Pier Giuseppe Monateri

The essay introduces an original interpretation of Moltmann’s thought on Christian kenosis, according to the fundamental critical method known as ‘close reading’. On this ground, the Author brings to the surface the complex bulk of literary quotations which give substance to a specific passage in Moltmann’s work “The Crucified God”. Quotations become an intellectual device apt to produce meaning through its proper deferral and suspension. Within this framework, the Author’s main purpose is to put at the centre of the scene the explicit reference made by Moltmann to C. Schmitt’s concept of stasis, in order to explain the self-emptying of …

Music Of Worship And The Sanctification Of The Believer, Jonathan D. Twining Apr 2013

Music Of Worship And The Sanctification Of The Believer, Jonathan D. Twining

Jonathan D Twining

Because of its importance in the life of a believer, music should aid in the sanctification process. The debate concerning the use of contemporary music in church worship contexts arises from the belief that musical styles can either encourage or discourage the sanctification of a believer by influencing emotions. The efficiency of music for the purpose of sanctification should be considered by the listener. Music that is associated with unbiblical influences and intentions may not be fit for use in worship settings.

Ciudades Malas, Ciudades Falsas, Ciudades Feas, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq. Dec 2012

Ciudades Malas, Ciudades Falsas, Ciudades Feas, Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa Arq.

Jaime F. Erazo Espinosa

The Aesthetics Of Copyright Adjudication, Glen Cheng Jan 2012

The Aesthetics Of Copyright Adjudication, Glen Cheng

Glen Cheng

The American legal system is unable to continue avoiding the question of art versus non-art. In particular, questions of copyrightability often hinge on art-status. Yet art is a constantly evolving, reflexive field in which artists and philosophers continually challenge the status quo. Judges would benefit from analyzing claims to art-status under the objectivity provided by well-developed aesthetic theories, aided by expert testimony when needed. After reviewing several major philosophies of art, this article proposes a framework for adjudicating art-status based on an aesthetic theory known as the Historical Definition of Art. Furthermore, to balance copyright law's purpose of protecting innovation …

This article is a rough draft of an article that I contributed to an edited volume of articles dealing with progressive education theory. I reflect on articles that Hannah Arendt and Walter Benjamin wrote that deal with educational reform and innovation, both political in nature.

La Filosofía De Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz: Cinco Navegaciones Filosóficas En El Primero Sueño Y Una Propuesta Heterodoxa, Virginia Aspe Apr 2009

La Filosofía De Sor Juana Inés De La Cruz: Cinco Navegaciones Filosóficas En El Primero Sueño Y Una Propuesta Heterodoxa, Virginia Aspe

Virginia Aspe Dra.
