Gray Wolves In Washington: Possible Habitat And Corridors For Movement, Joey Bisig Jun 2013

Gray Wolves In Washington: Possible Habitat And Corridors For Movement, Joey Bisig

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Increasing the Gray Wolf (Canis lupus) population in Washington state plays two important roles. First, they are an important part of many ecosystems as they are a keystone species. This means that they are a top predator and their absence has reverberating effects on the rest of the ecosystem. As seen at Yellowstone State Park in Wyoming, elk populations ran rampant for many years and reached their peak of roughly 25,000 individuals in 1988 (Kauffman et. al. 2008). The issue lies in the grazing that these elk partake in of a vital habitat producer, Aspen saplings. In 1995 thirty …

Environmental Justice (Or Injustice?) In Pierce County, Atalie E. Moore Jun 2013

Environmental Justice (Or Injustice?) In Pierce County, Atalie E. Moore

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:According to the EPA, environmental justice is the fair treatment of all people, regardless of demographic characteristics, with respect to environmental issues (2012). However, environmental injustice often occurs. Case studies have shown that minority populations and those living in poverty shoulder a disproportionate burden of environmental problems (Blodgett 2006; Bullard et. al. 2007; Mennis 2002). A socioeconomic status (SES) index shows the disparity between advantaged and disadvantaged communities.

The State Of The Arts: A Comparative Study Of Public Arts Spending In Tacoma, Wa In The 1999-2000 And 2011-201 Funding Bienniums, Rebecca Solverson

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:The impact of the arts on a community is an exceptionally difficult thing to measure; the return on investment can be economic, social, emotional, and highly personal for each individual. The maps below consider the distribution of cultural spending in Tacoma by the Tacoma Arts Commission (TAC) in terms of geographic distribution, amount spent, and programmatic focus. For context, spending is presented against backdrops of average income, population density, and average educational attainment for adults over 25. This study exclusively considered data in two funding bienniums, 1999-2000 and 2011-2012, and data is classified into four categories: Operational Funds, Permanent …

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist Jun 2011

Land Classification Surrounding Spirit Lake At Mount St. Helens, Washington, Danielle Dahlquist

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Following the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18th 1980, the ecosystem of Spirit Lake was dramatically altered and, since then, there has been a significant increase in the amount of primary productivity in the south end of the lake. The focus of this research is to identify land cover types surrounding Spirit Lake which, in the future, could be used to identify possible nutrient point sources flowing into surface waters entering the lake. The watershed pouring into the lake is covered by nitrogen-fixing vegetation that could potentially be contributing to the increased productivity. The work completed for …

Toxic Release Facilities Analysis In The Southern Puget Sound Region, Niki Hung Jun 2011

Toxic Release Facilities Analysis In The Southern Puget Sound Region, Niki Hung

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Through energy consumptions, recycling, and different kinds of operations, numerous facilities are disposing and releasing a significant amount of chemicals every day. Within all those chemicals, some could be functioned as fertilizers while most are toxic, threatening both the environment and people’s health. The purpose of this project is to find out the areas with relatively serious toxic concentration in the south part of the Puget Sound region (Pierce, King, and Kitsap County), as well as who are the most affected people in those areas. The general public who are interested in environmental issues might get the idea of …
