Millions of companion animals are placed in shelters annually, while a greater number of people struggle with some sort of disability. Designing an animal shelter that caters to these disabilities will allow those to be more comfortable in their environment. This creates an opportunity to foster stronger bonds with animals, increasing adoption rates.

For almost 100 years Smith Elementary School has been an institution of learning and a place of growth for children across the community of Kenmore, including myself. While its closing marks the end of an era it also presents a unique opportunity. Through adaptive reuse, Smith Elementary can have a second life and remain a cornerstone building in the community. This research paper is a response to my personal encounters and experience with the homeless and low-income population in Akron, Ohio over the course of my 5 years at the University of Akron. It explores the causes and statistics of poverty and homelessness within the United States and the greater Akron area as well as what is currently being done to aid and reduce this population. Haven of Rest Ministries, one of the largest and most successful shelters in Akron, is showcased for the multitude of services they provide on a daily basis. Sustainability is a topic regularly discussed within today’s culture. Many people are worried about society’s future due to pollution, excessive use of nonrenewable resources, and more. Even with all of the growing awareness and promotion, the historical context and more specifically the passive design techniques used in buildings have received little attention. Interdisciplinary studies have brought benefits to introducing new solutions to the traditional environment and traditional therapies. Sustainability in relation to design has been suggested in 2006, by the Center for Building Performance and Diagnostic (CBPD) at Carnegie Mellon University to incorporate daylight, solar, heat and ventilation of the natural environment combined with the innovations of current technologies (Whitmore, 2011).
