Cultural Site Stewardship Program

• Active stewards in the program now total 169, an increase of 497% since December 2004.
• 11 additional major cultural site impacts resulting in measurable damages reported this quarter. Four additional impacts with somewhat lesser significance also reported in the quarter. Total impacts since December 2004 total 36 major and 12 less significant.
• 2006 monitoring plan for Gold Butte implemented.
• Training class on Southern Nevada Pre-history presented to 41 site stewards.

When the Ladies’ Home Journal began in 1883, its creator, Mr. Cyrus H. K. Curtis, could not have possibly dreamed that the magazine would grow to be the most influential woman’s journal of all time. A material culture analysis of American nationalistic emblems published in the Ladies’ Home Journal between 1890 and 1900 will determine how Edward Bok, editor, controlled nationalism in the feminine market, displaying the openness of women to nationalism in the late 19th century. It will also reveal how Bok created and controlled an educational tool he deemed “Americanization”, establishing a technique that magazines would replicate in …

Heritage Preservation Projects

Prepared by the Fall 2005 Conservation of Historic Building Materials class. This Historic Structure Report contains a developmental history and narrative description of Oak Hill, elevations and floor plans for the structure, conditions assessments of the building exterior, interior, structure, systems and treatment recommendations for those sections. The purpose of this report is to provide a current assessment of the condition of the property and to provide recommendations for needed repairs and options for future consideration.

• 17 new site stewards trained during the quarter. Active stewards in the program now total 167, up from 150 in last quarter.
• Three Desert National Wildlife Refuge sites added to monitoring schedule.
• Comprehensive monitoring plan for Sloan Canyon NCA implemented.
• New training classes offered in GPS navigation and Clark County pre-history.
• 3 additional major cultural site impacts resulting in measurable damages reported this quarter. Four additional impacts with somewhat lesser significance also reported in the quarter. Total impacts since December 2004 total 11 major and 12 less significant.

Local governments across Australia are often placed in the invidious position of acknowledging the long term value to the community of a property or place by including it in a heritage register whilst alienating some current, often vocal, sectors of that community who raise concerns over an actual or perceived loss of individual, usually proprietary, rights. In 1862, Orson B. Adams settled in Harrisburg, Utah. He and his family were part of a movement by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormons, to create a self-sufficient colony in the west. The Mormon settlers were "called" to establish agricultural towns throughout southern Utah and west to the Pacific and grow crops such as grapes and cotton.

The project study area is on the site of the former Harrisburg Settlement, in Central Washington County, Utah between the towns of Leeds and St. George, Utah, and west of Interstate 15. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has recently (2001) acquired a 200 acre parcel of the project site. The landscape contains thousands of years of history in a small area, including features from the prehistoric cultures of the Virgin Anasazi and Southern Paiute, settlement of the Mormon pioneers, mining industry, and remnants of a 1950's Hollywood movie set. As generations segment and separate by distance and relationships, the chapel, school, and cemetery in what was known as the Saunders Chapel Community in Hawkins County, Tennessee, becomes a unifying bond to its descendents. This study records Saunders School history as an established central archive and uses the history for a restoration proposal. Saunders history, like all social and cultural history, exists as coalesced fragments. In the hope of deriving proof of the past, each entity and event is brought together so they might illuminate another. The story of Saunders Chapel will continue to grow and live on through the …
