Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 3335. Letter, 13 November 1936, to Bertha (Mrs. A. Edwin) Rice, Russellville, Kentucky from E. Leland Taylor, president of the Liberty Hall Association. The letter solicits subscriptions to enable the Association to exercise an option to purchase Liberty Hall in Frankfort, Kentucky and open the house to the public. The letter notes the purchase price of $30,000, a figure that includes a Gilbert Stuart portrait, and lists other historical and patriotic organizations cooperating in the effort.

Finding aid only for Folklife Archives Project 1245. A collection of materials relating to research on the Felts Log House undertaken by Betsy Tyrie and Colin Stephen. The documentation seeks to interpret the social aspects of the log house as well as architectural changes made to the structure over the course of nearly 150 years. The report also provides insight into the house’s history, its construction, and its eventual relocation to WKU’s campus in the late 1970s. Recorded audio interviews, black and white and color photographs, newspaper articles, and a brief personal essay are also included in the collection.

Bertram describes how funds were raised in order to build the schoolhouses, teachers’ annual incomes, and a “typical day” in the life of a student. The paper also contains color photographs of each one-room school and a brief description of the location.

The author describes each schoolhouse as well as common characteristics of how the schools operated on a daily basis. The paper includes pictures of the Hagan School and the former New Haven School.

Monroe County, Kentucky (1997 estimated population, 11, 223) is located in the south central portion of the state alongside the Kentucky-Tennessee border. It is part of what is known as the Pennyrile (Pennyroyal) region, an area named for the native medicinal plant, and situated between the Central Lowlands of the Midwest and Appalachian Plateau. Allen County, Kentucky, is located in the south central portion of the state along the Kentucky-Tennessee border. On that border, Allen County meets the Tennessee counties of Sumner and Macon. Within the Commonwealth, it is bounded by to the northwest and northeast by Warren and Barren counties (respectively), Monroe County to the east, and Simpson County to the west. The county’s northern/eastern boundary is drawn by the Barren River and Barren River Lake.
