Architecture Ethics Justice, Gregory S. Palermo Dec 2017

Architecture Ethics Justice, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

The title of this talk includes no conjunctions and bears no punctuation in order to heighten the conception of the simultaneity, the unitariness of three conceptions that we often perceive as disparate realms. As I put together these remarks, I have begun to think in terms of shaping a more complete paper with this same title – entering into a territory (perhaps presumptively!) not unlike Heidegger’s “Building Dwelling Thinking” of his earlier period -- which is not a dissimilar associative lead. Today though is not the time for a tightly argued philosophical statement regarding the premises of such a conflation.

Professional Virtue And Citizenship: An Ethical Framing Of The Aia, Gregory S. Palermo Dec 2017

Professional Virtue And Citizenship: An Ethical Framing Of The Aia, Gregory S. Palermo

Gregory Palermo

This paper proposes that the American Institute of Architects (AIA), a corporate collective of the architectural profession, if it wishes to be more than a professional trade organization speaking to the economic self-interest of its members (and being perceived as such), has available to it two ethical courses to pursue: 1) That of improving the knowledge, skills and judgment of architects – defining and working on the virtues of the architect; and 2) That of participating in public policy decision-making and speaking out with regard to environmental design, whether proposals be public or private. Both of these concepts are embedded …

The committee was comprised of Directors/ curators of campus academic collections, Campus Planning staff and other related campus professionals. The first task of the committee was to develop a basis for creating a planning framework for the academic collections. Future Of The Library? Turning Conflicting Pressures Into Compelling Opportunities, Gerald Jay Schafer, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham Oct 2015

Future Of The Library? Turning Conflicting Pressures Into Compelling Opportunities, Gerald Jay Schafer, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham

Ludmilla D Pavlova

Many institutions are scrutinizing library space as a potential space bank in times of tight capital resources, while librarians are seeking ways to shift lesser-used collections into storage, create more user space, and improve services. Accomplishing these tasks at University of Massachusetts Amherst's Du Bois Library, a 26-story tower, posed a particular challenge. The library's master plan needed to explore compatible uses, partners for integrated services, and identify opportunities to repurpose space for university needs as well as the library's future vision.

Ludmilla D Pavlova

This is an institutional master plan outlining capacity development for the University of Massachusetts going forward to 2020 and beyond to 2050. The plan establishes a shared vision for future development that features new open spaces; transportation and pedestrian safety; parking decks built on the edge of campus; new bike-ways; new circulation systems including pathways with striking views of the Pioneer Valley; improvements to utilities; and a strategy for reuse of historic buildings. The administration held more than 90 events in the past year with key stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, host communities and regional representatives and that was complemented …

El Turismo En Pátzcuaro (México). Percepciones Del Visitante Extranjero Entre 1880‑1920, Eder García

Eder García

In Mexico, tourism arises as an economic activity around the 1920s, through government agencies and policies for tourism control. Previously, travelers in the country were amazed with what they named as primitive and picturesque, found especially in the rural villages. Patzcuaro was one of the places that best exemplified the picturesque, through an imaginary forged in the mind of the visitor, published in the books where authors reflected their views and experiences. The present paper analyze how this imaginary picturesque of Patzcuaro was showed, becoming a category of Mexican tourism, being even today one of the most attractive offers for …

This report, forwarded to the City of San Luis Obispo's Cultural Heritage Commission proposes Greta Place as a mid-century modern historic district. Greta is a small street located centrally in San Luis Obispo, CA (See Figure 1). It has a unique and distinct mid-century presence that is both a well-preserved and concentrated example of a collection of Mid-century single-family homes produced in San Luis Obispo as the City began to expand in the 1950s. It specifically called out in the City’s Historic Context Statement when it describes the street as “a cohesive collection of one-story Mid-century Modern houses along Greta …

Infrastructure For Economic Growth And Development: Addressing The Infrastructure Finance Gap, Michael Regan May 2014

Infrastructure For Economic Growth And Development: Addressing The Infrastructure Finance Gap, Michael Regan

Michael Regan

Infrastructure is one of the most important tools for accelerating economic development in developing and transition economies and in concert with a nation’s institutional and policy settings, it is one of the key drivers of economic development, local and international trade, improved living standards and the relief of poverty. However, the benefits are not always uniform across nations, the results vary significantly between industries and improved social returns from additional investment have more to do with the procurement method and operational efficiencies than the amount of money that is employed.

Establishing New Urban Green Spaces Classification For Malaysian Cities, Mehdi Rakhshandehroo, Mohd Johari Mohd Yusof

Moreover, the United Nations (2010) projects that the world’s urban areas will absorb all of the global population growth over the next four decades, as well as continue to draw some of the rural population. Urban green is often at the center of the debate on urban sustainability, as it is so essential for quality of life. Urban green and open spaces have different values like: ecological, economic, social …. In urban planning usually there is a conflict between urban development and environmental …

An Investigation Into Psychological Stress Detection And Management In Organisations Operating In Project And Construction Management, Alan Patching, Rick Best Dec 2013

An Investigation Into Psychological Stress Detection And Management In Organisations Operating In Project And Construction Management, Alan Patching, Rick Best

Rick Best

While psychologists remain divided whether ‘workplace stress’ is caused by workplace experiences or other factors, it’s commonly accepted that, regardless of cause, people experiencing stress can demonstrate decreased workplace performance. From a human performance and productivity perspective, from whence stress arises is somewhat irrelevant–the relevant fact is that it’s far more important to have systems and procedures in place to contribute to avoidance of undue work environment caused stress. It is also important to identify when an employee is exhibiting signs of stress than it is to focus only on remedial measures for when stress effects have already taken their …

Community Commons: An Analysis Of The Gullah Communities Of South Carolina, Elizabeth Brabec Jun 2013

Community Commons: An Analysis Of The Gullah Communities Of South Carolina, Elizabeth Brabec

Elizabeth Brabec

Descended from slaves brought to the southeast United States between the early 17th and mid 19th centuries, the Gullah-Geechee of South Carolina and Georgia in the United States, have developed distinctive, culturally-expressive creole communities. Juxtaposed against their ancestor’s plantation slave villages, present-day settlements reveal deliberate creations of community and strong connections to place. The Gullah concept of place and community also includes an understanding of the land as commons that is at odds with the dominant culture in the United States.Under slavery the Gullah lived in rigidly geometric settlements. Although this was the only settlement pattern the slaves had experienced, …

The first is an initiative by a local community group ‘Varsity Lakes Community Limited’ to prepare a disaster management guide for the masterplanned community of Varsity Lakes with support from NRMA insurance company and the local council. The second is the ‘Community Watch’ program initiated by the Gold Coast City Council to involve local community groups in various parts of the City …

Developing A Basket Of Resources As A Tool For Collecting Construction Cost Data Internationally, Rick Best Oct 2012

Developing A Basket Of Resources As A Tool For Collecting Construction Cost Data Internationally, Rick Best

Rick Best

Comparing construction costs between countries, even when the countries share a common currency, is recognised as a difficult problem. Construction cost data has been included in the World Bank's International Comparison Program for many years and that data has been collected using a variety of methods. Currently several different methods are in use within the ICP and these include several types of baskets of inputs of various types and combinations. These methods have been constantly under review and as part of the latest review a new approach is being developed based around a basket of resources (BoR). The new basket …

Exploring The Intersection Of Project And Change Management, Lynn Crawford, Alicia Aitken, Anat Hassner-Nahmias Oct 2012

Exploring The Intersection Of Project And Change Management, Lynn Crawford, Alicia Aitken, Anat Hassner-Nahmias

Lynn Crawford

The intersection of change and project management is attracting interest from both practitioners and researchers because, in a rapidly changing and evolving environment, an organization’s ability to change itself has become critical to strategic performance. Much of the responsibility for organizational change rests in the hands of general management but devolution of parts of this responsibility to specific change management roles is occurring and there is widespread acceptance of projects and programs as organizing frameworks for change initiatives. However, the fields of project and change management rest on different foundations and have developed in different directions. Although project and program …

Mina Kaboudarahangi

The intention of this study is to highlight the importance of garden in creating national landscape identity. Using Locative Media In Heritage Landscapes: A Review Of Current Practice, Elizabeth Brabec, Gordon Mclennan Jun 2012

Using Locative Media In Heritage Landscapes: A Review Of Current Practice, Elizabeth Brabec, Gordon Mclennan

Elizabeth Brabec

Locative media projects are beginning to be recognized in various arts and humanities disciplines as a portal through which interpretive information can be connected to location. Projects can be accessed from two different perspectives: in front of a computer screen or on the ground with the aid of a GPS enabled smart phone. In either format, content in the form of narrative, video, images, historic documents, etc., can be connected with a specific GPS point location on a map or on a real site. However, while locative media holds the potential to create a visitor experience without negatively impacting the …

Iconographic Method And The Development Of Emerging Garden’S Identity, Mina Kaboudarahangi, Osman Mohd Tahir, Mustafa Kamal M.S Apr 2012

Iconographic Method And The Development Of Emerging Garden’S Identity, Mina Kaboudarahangi, Osman Mohd Tahir, Mustafa Kamal M.S

Mina Kaboudarahangi

Garden design has been described as a category of fine arts with a long association with landscape painting. Thus, gardens can be considered as a work of art due to their artistic nature and value. Accordingly, like other artistic artefacts, they can be studied and recognized by their specific icons. This is very true for a number of well-known gardens in the world, like Persian, English, Japanese and Chinese gardens, which are recognized through their individual icons. However, emerging gardens still do not possess any icons that people can identify them with. Consequently, there is a need for these gardens …

The Use Of Spatial And Mixed Methods In Analyzing Cultural Landscapes, Elizabeth Brabec, Chingwen Cheng, Kristina Molnarova Mar 2012

The Use Of Spatial And Mixed Methods In Analyzing Cultural Landscapes, Elizabeth Brabec, Chingwen Cheng, Kristina Molnarova

Elizabeth Brabec

The cultural landscape is a complex phenomenon resulting from both natural-geographical and social-cultural processes. Defining the normative patterns produced by each culture and/or historical period is essential to understanding the patterns and features of the anthropogenic landscape and the inherent meaning. Currently, an understanding of both historical and contemporary patterns is developed from the qualitative analysis of a single or small number of cases. Results obtained from a single or small number of cases are inherently limited in their ability to clearly identify the pattern in a complex system, particularly when a chosen case may present an anomaly rather than …
