Section III: The Medieval Church

The Gothic cathedral, like the Summa of Aquinas, the University of Paris, and the Christendom of Innocent III, stands as one of the major expressions of the spirit of the High Middle Ages. The word "Gothic," coined by the Renaissance as a term of disparagement, has come recently to have more favorable and appreciative connotations. Such a reevaluation may be due not only to the better perspective that a longer period of time offers us, but also to a deeper understanding of the cultural role of artistic and spiritual symbolism. The artistic expression of the Middle Ages found its supreme ...

The Law Library, Hobart Coffey Jan 1958

The Law Library, Hobart Coffey

About the Buildings

The history of the Law Library dates from the establishment of the Law School in 1859· In June of that year, having in mind the Law Department that was to open the following October, the Regents appropriated $2,000 for the purchase of law books. That any books were actually bought before the department opened seems unlikely. It is more probable that the first Law Library was composed of a small collection of about 350 volumes donated by Judge Thomas M. Cooley, and duly accepted by the Regents in October, 1859. This first collection is said to have included ten ...

Landscape Architectural Design Of The Cemetery , Harold Roy Kreiser Jan 1957

Landscape Architectural Design Of The Cemetery , Harold Roy Kreiser

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The general acceptance of the cemetery, by different societies, as the preferred burial place has made them an expression of culture, consequently numerous forms and various classifications such as monument and non-monument have developed. This practice of burying the dead has also resulted in an enormous acreage of land devoted exclusively to cemeteries. This form of land use does not diminish or remain constant in respect to size but is constantly increasing. As our society in the United States becomes more urban in character more and more of this cemetery acreage will be located in the metropolitan areas. In order ...
