The Flow Of Power: Addressing Asymmetric Flood Risk In The Upper Valley, Eric Vr Hryniewicz Jun 2023

The Flow Of Power: Addressing Asymmetric Flood Risk In The Upper Valley, Eric Vr Hryniewicz

Geography Undergraduate Senior Theses

Floods are the most damaging natural disasters in America. Land use change in upland watersheds can increase the probability and severity of floods (Bronstert, Niehoff, & Burger, 2002). When watersheds are divided by political and private property boundaries it leads to a misalignment of incentives in which downstream users lack recourse for upstream land use decisions contributing to flood risk. In this thesis, researchers interrogate the attributes of town officials and towns that determine what motivates town governments to act on flooding and what motivates and enables town officials to collaborate on planning and how do they collaborate in practice. …

Crash Injury Severity Prediction With Artificial Neural Networks, Rima Abisaad Dec 2021

Crash Injury Severity Prediction With Artificial Neural Networks, Rima Abisaad

Dissertations

Motor vehicle crashes are one of our nation's most serious social, economic and health issues. They are the leading cause of death among children and young adults, killing approximately 1.35 million people each year. Providing a safe and efficient transportation system is the primary goal of transportation engineering and planning. To help reduce traffic fatalities and injuries on roadways, crash prediction models are used to forecast the injury severity of potential crashes and apply precautionary countermeasures accordingly. Most of these models are reactive as they use historical crash data to categorize crash-related factors. Recently, advancements have been made in developing …

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent Aug 2014

Interpreting, Stephanie Jo Kent

Doctoral Dissertations

What do community interpreting for the Deaf in western societies, conference interpreting for the European Parliament, and language brokering in international management have in common? Academic research and professional training have historically emphasized the linguistic and cognitive challenges of interpreting, neglecting or ignoring the social aspects that structure communication. All forms of interpreting are inherently social; they involve relationships among at least three people and two languages. The contexts explored here, American Sign Language/English interpreting and spoken language interpreting within the European Parliament, show that simultaneous interpreting involves attitudes, norms and values about intercultural communication that overemphasize information and discount …

Fm, Risk And Climate Change Adaptation, Keith Jones, Mark Mulville, Adele Brooks Jan 2013

Fm, Risk And Climate Change Adaptation, Keith Jones, Mark Mulville, Adele Brooks

Conference papers

Improving the sustainability of built assets in the light of uncertain futures is a major challenge facing the Facilities Management profession. A changing climate poses significant challenges to the performance of built assets in-use and could potentially render many built assets prematurely obsolete. How business clients plan for such changes formed the focus of a research project undertaken by the authors. This paper presents the findings of a 12 month Action Research project that sought to identify the impact of future climate change on the performance of a new £75m education building over the first 60 years of operation. The …

Sustainable Architecture And Quality Of Place, Arlinda Sheqiri Nov 2012

Sustainable Architecture And Quality Of Place, Arlinda Sheqiri

UBT International Conference

A major part of this challenge is the development for better city-better life and being able to create sustainable architecture solutions through more effective ways to implement in our everyday life process. Strategists, designers and planners are also concerned with combining means and time efficiently. We can see, for example, nearly half of the city in Prishtina has faced wild development or re-development. This has happened as a result of individual construction projects which were undertook without municipal building permits because the pressure to develop was much high than capability of local authority to provide this service. Nevertheless even after …

Systemic Rework Risk Classification For Offshore Projects, Peter Love, Jim Smith, Sangwon Han Oct 2012

Systemic Rework Risk Classification For Offshore Projects, Peter Love, Jim Smith, Sangwon Han

Jim Smith

Rework arises due to errors and omissions, and significantly contributes to project cost and schedule overruns in offshore projects. To acquire an understanding of the causal nature of rework in offshore projects, twenty three in-depth interviews with leading oil and gas industry practitioners were undertaken. The dialogue and narratives obtained from the interviews enabled the underlying dynamics of rework to be determined. A risk classification matrix is developed that can be utilized as a frame of reference to mitigate future rework. If rework risks are not given due consideration then there is the potential for latent conditions to become embedded …

(Re)Creating The Worldgame: An Architectural Exploration Of Risk, Lynsie Cantwell Oct 2012

(Re)Creating The Worldgame: An Architectural Exploration Of Risk, Lynsie Cantwell

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The ultimate goal of the project is to create a "game stadium" where all the risk factors and building methods can be tested one by one or all at once on real buildings and building components. A stadium of this nature will allow the United Nations to test its structures on a country by country basis in order to aid the nations most at threat before a risk becomes realized, while still keeping the facility itself safe from harm. In this way, the project will live up to Fuller's own approach of being comprehensive, anticipatory, a design strategy, and a …

Public Private Partnerships: What Does The Future Hold?, Michael Regan, Jim Smith, Peter Love Aug 2010

Public Private Partnerships: What Does The Future Hold?, Michael Regan, Jim Smith, Peter Love

Michael Regan

Internationally, Public and Private Partnerships (PPPs) are being used across a wide variety of economic and social infrastructure projects in more than 85 countries. PPPs are a procurement methodology that brings a rigorous risk-weighted approach to major projects using a competitive bid process and private sector expertise and innovation. PPPs are achieving a number of significant improvements in major project procurement and improved public service delivery. This paper considers the prospects of PPPs from the perspective of government clients and their promoters of PPPs and whether current volatility and uncertainty in the capital markets in Australia will affect the feasibility of …

Managing Risks Associated With The Jbcc(Principal Building Agreement) From Thesouth African Contractor’S Perspective, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Nishani Harinarain Jan 2009

Managing Risks Associated With The Jbcc(Principal Building Agreement) From Thesouth African Contractor’S Perspective, Ayman Ahmed Ezzat Othman, Nishani Harinarain

Architectural Engineering

Construction is a complex and risky business. It is a time-consuming process involving a multitude of organisations with different objectives and skills. In addition, increasing client expectations coupled with the technological development of materials and equipment made the construction industry subject to more risks than any other industry. Contracts are essential tools for organising the relationship between involved parties and managing associated risk. For years the South African construction industry had a very poor reputation in managing construction risks. In order to improve the image of the South African construction industry and to assist contractors to develop their proper risk …
