Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning Masters Projects

Communities everywhere are experiencing significant and unpredictable shifts in the social and physical infrastructure of their landscapes. In the midst of a cultural, political, and ecological moment which has no precedent, it seems as though many of our contemporary crises have one thing in common: they will either be alleviated or drastically exacerbated by the alliance of professions working to improve the built environment. Now more than ever, the world is in need of designers, planners, and policy-makers who are willing to use this moment of great change as momentum to imagine a new era of community development, one which ...

Future Of The Library? Turning Conflicting Pressures Into Compelling Opportunities, Gerald Jay Schafer, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham Oct 2015

Future Of The Library? Turning Conflicting Pressures Into Compelling Opportunities, Gerald Jay Schafer, Ludmilla Pavlova-Gillham

Ludmilla D Pavlova

Many institutions are scrutinizing library space as a potential space bank in times of tight capital resources, while librarians are seeking ways to shift lesser-used collections into storage, create more user space, and improve services. Accomplishing these tasks at University of Massachusetts Amherst's Du Bois Library, a 26-story tower, posed a particular challenge. The library's master plan needed to explore compatible uses, partners for integrated services, and identify opportunities to repurpose space for university needs as well as the library's future vision.

Urban Transient Spaces: [Re] Appropriating Knoxville, Tennessee's World's Fair Park, Kathryn Dupree Greer Aug 2013

Urban Transient Spaces: [Re] Appropriating Knoxville, Tennessee's World's Fair Park, Kathryn Dupree Greer

Masters Theses

Transient Space: An urban site that was developed for a temporary event or short-term program.

In this thesis, I will explore urban gaps created by transient events, such as the Olympics, World Fairs, and the World Cup. I believe urban environments created to accommodate for these transitory events present an interesting predicament for planners and architects. In several cases, these sites are not properly developed or programmed for post-event occupancy and create gaps in a city’s urban fabric.

I will specifically be examining World’s Fair Park in Knoxville, Tennessee. This site once hosted the 1982 World’s Fair ...

Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula Jan 2010

Contradiction And Duality Within The City: The House Of Arts And Culture, Andrei Sdrula

Architecture Theses

This project aims to apply the concepts of contradiction and duality as described in the manifesto to reinvigorate and reconnect a portion of the city Bucharest: the capital of Romania. This city has a long history of architectural achievements and disasters, and this intervention gets to the heart of that legacy when it confronts the House of Parliament: a massive megalomaniacal building constructed under the Ceausescu regime in the 1980s. The project addresses the parliament, sector, city, country, and people with first: a master plan, and then a civic building within that master plan that is located in front of ...

Redefining Branding In Architecture: Case Study, Westside Railyards Development New York City, Usa, Andrew Vuono

Architecture Theses

I am proposing a master plan of a 26 acre (1.4 million aq. ft.) development on top of the West Side Rail Yards near Midtown Manhattan. Midtown Manhattan in and of itself has a brand and I would like to design within it. The goal is to create a series of towers that specifically focus on anchoring the Highline as a destination all while enhancing the “New York Experience” of the surrounding context. The brand will be re-identifying the unused rail yards, due to its proximity to the highline, Javits Center, Pennsylvania Station, Madison Square Garden, the Hudson River ...

A Guideline For Master Plans In Cities In The Mexican Republic, Carlos Eduardo Inda Hernandez

Architecture Master Theses

The purpose of my thesis is to study a guideline for Planning Agencies, using as their main tool the master plan and always with the idea that the planner and the political official would be working together. It will be useful to study the planning tools in the U.S., and the organization of planning in European countries and decide what could be used and what not, to study the variations to suit the Mexican scene and the different Mexican cities.
