Intensifying The Experience Of Contemporary Art, Wanjin Feng Jun 2023

Intensifying The Experience Of Contemporary Art, Wanjin Feng

Masters Theses

Contemporary Art museums, emphasizing visual experience- es, struggle to accommodate multi-sensory art forms. This thesis introduces a groundbreaking exhibition design mod- el focused on creating immersive, multi-sensory experiences for visitors. The model transitions from a passive observation paradigm to an interactive perception approach, fostering a deeper understanding and emotional connection to art.

Applied to the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), the model introduces strategies such as narrative sculptures, interactive drawing spaces, integrated reading within exhibitions, and emotionally-driven spatial design. These strategies aim to make art more accessible, promoting personal connections with artworks.

In conclusion, the proposed model transforms contemporary art …

Activating Non-Place, Noah Stogner May 2023

Activating Non-Place, Noah Stogner

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Marc Augé defined non-place as the typical area in the urban space that has lost its identity and thus has fallen into the banal. Some of these typical nonplaces include airports, hotel rooms, convenience stores, and shopping malls. Augé argues that our urban space is ridden with these infrastructural inserts that lack of uniqueness and are homogeneous in nature. This lack of uniqueness has evolved into a mass exodus of urban interaction resulting in the identity of a city becoming lost. Auge’s nonplace are evident in our urban and suburban environments. On the other hand, Kevin Lynch defines the city …

Metamosque – Envisioning The Mosque As A Virtual Public Space, Alaa Albarazy Jan 2022

Metamosque – Envisioning The Mosque As A Virtual Public Space, Alaa Albarazy

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, the mosque was not only a space for a communal prayer but also a place for building a community. Today, however, with conflicts and diseases fragmenting society, people are less able to gather physically in large spaces. Out of necessity, people rely on technology to get together and interact virtually. In this context, my research challenges the notion of the mosque as a physical space, proposing, instead, its extension into virtual space. Recent global events pose the question: Can the metaverse offer an opportunity for the mosque to reassert itself as a public space. I propose that a MetaMosque …

Urban Inter-Space: Convergence Of Human Interaction And Form, Clayton Beaudoin Jul 2020

Urban Inter-Space: Convergence Of Human Interaction And Form, Clayton Beaudoin

Masters Theses

How can the convergence of human interaction and form activate underused spaces and catalyze future community developments?

Architecture is defined by human needs, such as that of shelter, comfort, and place. However, we as humans have other needs; the need to create, to make, to play, to thrive, to inhabit, and to interact. The interaction between humans and architecture can serve as fuel to answer the question of how these ideas converge. This thesis examines the dynamic between humans and architecture, and how this interaction can catalyze future change by creating space and place utilized within the underused areas of …

A Green Dialogue For Aging Society, Dian Tan May 2018

A Green Dialogue For Aging Society, Dian Tan

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis addresses the issue about disconnections of communication between human to human, and human to environment. It seems like we got connections with other people via various smart devices, meanwhile we are so disconnected with the people and environment where we are currently living. Technologies sometimes hinder the communicating ability of human. Architecture could become a media that contains more messages send to human, helping on the communication between human to human, and human to environment.

Patient Experience Journal

The objective of this paper was to understand the variables of patient experience by analyzing recent and relevant evidence and to identify design solutions within the hospital environment that positively impact those variables. A systematic review of literature published from 2008-present was conducted to identify variables that contribute to patient experience benefits. Identified variables were documented and categorized into a design, organizational, and outcome variable matrix. Interviews were conducted with professionals from healthcare institutions, architecture firms and organizations committed to improving the patient experience. Data from healthcare facilities, with high patient experience scores, was also examined to derive effective design …

Innovation Of The Residential Buildings And Community In The Emerging City Rongcheng, Xing Yu Jul 2016

Innovation Of The Residential Buildings And Community In The Emerging City Rongcheng, Xing Yu

Masters Theses

Nowadays in China, every province is implementing urbanization, which is a national policy goal. In this process, Copinism is very obvious. Almost everything is being done by Western World rules, from buildings to lifestyles; apparently, China needs to learn a lot from the western world. However, with the development of urbanization, the inadequacy of this approach becomes more and more evident, especially in old cities with rich culture heritages. The overly rapid development speed even sharpens the resulted contradictions when it brings chances. With decades of “copying”, it’s time for China, a country with such a different culture system from …

A City Winery - Revealing Process + Promoting Interaction, Eline Warren Jan 2016

A City Winery - Revealing Process + Promoting Interaction, Eline Warren

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis project is an exploration of process in both design and winemaking. Wine has long been a part of Virginia’s history and culture and in recent years has influenced architecture and design that is specific to winemaking and hospitality. Through an interior intervention, this project addresses the many challenges of marrying production and hospitality design criteria under one roof. The final design encourages understanding of process through links between production and consumption with both a winemaking facility and laboratory that are integrated into the surrounding hospitality-oriented spaces. This visual exposure to the facility stimulates patron interest and intuitive knowledge …

The Synchronous City, Patricia Olivera Dec 2015

The Synchronous City, Patricia Olivera

Architecture Thesis Prep

Architects’ conceptualizations of cities reference and reflect trends in their societies at their time of conception. During the early 1900's architects speculated on modernist visions of cities, during the mid-late 1900's radical visions of cities emerged, and now, this project will operate among the framework of previous visions of cities by architects and envision a city based on digital information and communications technologies. We are living a Digital Revolution and exist in the age of Information. This thesis will explore the ways in which a city will be conceptualized if it was based on digital information and communication technologies (ICTs) …

Fixing The Forum: Re-Inventing The Typology That Once Was, Jonathan Bruno Apr 2013

Fixing The Forum: Re-Inventing The Typology That Once Was, Jonathan Bruno

Architecture Senior Theses

With the loss of the public forum, a sense of society, interaction among people, and a public place for everyone has vanished. With that in mind however, the old programmatic planning of the public forum is no longer adequate. I am proposing for the creation of a new typology, a contemporary forum driven by our consumerist culture.

Bookspace: Re-Evaluating How Books Occupy The City, Rhett C. Bruno Apr 2013

Bookspace: Re-Evaluating How Books Occupy The City, Rhett C. Bruno

I contend that a new space for books is required in the city. One which blurs the boundary between public and private - between seclusion and exposure. This space, or “Bookscape,” will integrate those who read books with those who craft him, offering a new level of interaction that benefits all parties involved.

Vertica 'L' Exchange: Public Interaction And Community Identity Along The 'L' In Chicago, Dena M. Wangberg Apr 2007

Vertica 'L' Exchange: Public Interaction And Community Identity Along The 'L' In Chicago, Dena M. Wangberg

Architecture Thesis Prep

"This thesis proposes to counter the 'genericness' of network identity in public transportation through the transformation of two nodes along the network of the 'L' in Chicago, Illinois.... Through this thesis investigation, the larger network of public transportation infrastructure is particularized by the introduction of new urban program that not only reveals the identities of a given place, but also helps to construct a richer identity throughout the entire network."

Social Interaction In The Digitally Networked City., Zachary Goldstein

Architecture Thesis Prep

"There is an underlying digital network that exists in our contemporary cities that affects every aspic of urban life. Technology has changed the way we perceive and activate space, and communicate with one another....

Public space will always be critical in city planning because it fosters human interaction. No matter how advanced our technology becomes, nothing will be able to replace talking to someone in person or participating in live events."

Ephemeral Urbanism: Exploring Impermanence In A Static Environment, Lawrence Salviejo Oct 2006

Ephemeral Urbanism: Exploring Impermanence In A Static Environment, Lawrence Salviejo

Architecture Thesis Prep

"In a city where hyper-density and permanence are established as the norm, its inhabitants are limited in their opportunity to perform acts of spontaneity. Architecture of monumentality within our cities has taken away form our outspoken temperament due to their static and unchanging nature. These buildings contain the desires and pre-occupations of their time and cannot adapt to changing social dynamics. To counter this rooted and presiding environment, I am proposing the introduction of mobile interventions to the urban environment in order to create opportunities for the city's inhabitants to engage in spontaneous discourse."

The Void: Urban By Association, Brian Kessler Oct 2005

The Void: Urban By Association, Brian Kessler

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I contend that a regional and now increasingly global scale dictates the development of the city. At this super-urban scale the specificity of architecture is impractical and too expensive, yet the city adn architecture still persist, because of the fundamental human desire for intimate social interaction. Architecture, stripped of its unobtainable utopian ideals, still maintains its significance as the literal and symbolic framework of the urban condition; the space of intense, physical interaction, leading to the literal procreation of humanity and limitless possibilities for new unforeseen activity."

Methods Of Perception, Caleb Mitchell Oct 2001

Methods Of Perception, Caleb Mitchell

Architecture Thesis Prep

"Architecture can teach an observer about itself both physically and metaphysically; this can be managed though interactive processes which demand haptic experiences.

(Methodoloy:) To investigate the capacities of mechanistic or interactive devices to reveal meaning (physical and metaphysical); and to eventually develop at full (or large) scale an artifact capable of operating through functional and meaningful interactions with a user."
