Alter[Native] Housing: Prefabricated Homes For Young People, Aayushi Patel May 2023

Alter[Native] Housing: Prefabricated Homes For Young People, Aayushi Patel

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Today young people cannot afford to buy a house that can sustain a lifestyle; one that is near their work, near a community, or near any leisure facilities. If there is housing they can afford, it is more than far removed from the city, where they have to travel over an hour to get to work, or their community, or leisure facilities. This thesis proposes prefabricated homes for young people that will allow them to build and grow a family within and develop long-lasting relationships to create a community for themselves.

Big Problems, Small Solutions A Solution To The Housing Crisis Through Prefabrication., Connor Smith May 2022

Big Problems, Small Solutions A Solution To The Housing Crisis Through Prefabrication., Connor Smith

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Coronavirus has come as America is in the midst of a crisis-level affordable housing issue. In 2019, 37.1 million households were identified as “housing cost-burdened,” spending 30% or more of their income on housing. 63% of Americans have been living pay-check to pay-check since the pandemic. And in addition to that, it has been estimated that we as a country have a deficit of at least 1,000,000 single-family homes. This is affordable housing as it stands today, with a huge percentage of Americans searching for permanent housing and unable to find any, and if they do, unable to afford it …

Insert Community: A Revaluation Of Space, Joshua Ramirez May 2021

Insert Community: A Revaluation Of Space, Joshua Ramirez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis is an attempt to question the way in which we understand and create housing. Currently, there is a growing issue with lack of space within our major and developing cities, creating an increase of demand for higher density buildings, which is especially true for housing. Apartments are typically the answer for higher density, smaller square footage needs, leaving large amounts of uniformly small and repetitive housing units, slowly forcing people to abandon their individuality. The question is, are there no available options for creating more expressive and freeing units for people to be able to live in?

It …

Bio-Symbiosis: Reconnecting To Nature And Each Other Through A Biological Lens, Melissa Holder May 2021

Bio-Symbiosis: Reconnecting To Nature And Each Other Through A Biological Lens, Melissa Holder

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that we spend 93 percent of our time indoors. For decades, the design of space has kept exterior environments separate from the interior conditions we have engineered for ourselves. This design process limits our ability to interact with other forms of life. According to Stephen Kellert’s principles of biophilic design, which defines an innate desire to interact with other forms of life, it is imperative that our spaces be designed to interact with each other and nature on an intimate and spiritual level. As humans have a hard-wired tendency to seek out relationships with other …

State Of Independence: Reinterpreting Senior Living Through Backyard Homes, Trevor Sparrow May 2020

State Of Independence: Reinterpreting Senior Living Through Backyard Homes, Trevor Sparrow

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

If a senior was able to live within a network of family and friends who could ensure a good quality of life was being met, as well as live in a space that was intentionally designed with their accessibility needs in mind, the independence and health of the senior can be well maintained into the final stages of their life. I am proposing the development of premanufactured homes which are designed specifically to address a senior's accessibility and care needs. These homes will be placed on the property of the existing home of the senior, their loved ones, or a …

Mars: Where Humans Become Martians, Briana G. Keith

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

What qualities will influence the culture that a Martian architecture responds to? Soon enough, as dwellers begin to influence this barren habitation, a new and divergent society will soon cultivate in response to the environment of The Red Planet. These changes will bloom in accordance to Mars’ Seeds of Culture- one that reinvents the connection between the inside and outside world. These “seeds” are defined by the atmospheric and geographic conditions that we will be susceptible to everyday: rusty red days and calming blue sunsets, powerful dust storms that encompass the entire planet, no vegetation to speak of, and low …

Re-Hanok-Ization, Joel Lee

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

South Korea is a relatively small country of roughly 38,000 miles^2 which to put it into perspective is about half of the state of Florida, this country has a GDP ranking of 12 worldwide. And South Korean’s have been doing so by modernizing commercial buildings and they have enlisted the services of famous architects from around the world such as Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando, & Richard Meier. What about their most commonly used buildings? Out of the 30% of land that is buildable in South …

City By The Sea, Izuchukwu O. Ojukwu May 2017

City By The Sea, Izuchukwu O. Ojukwu

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

This thesis investigates the current state of slums globally. The thesis argues that many of the hazardous environments of slums established is a product of the negative output devised by the current housing situation in said slum. The living quarters of residents within most slums exemplify how much the citizens are not able/willing to treat the area as a home. The lack of care and devices to help reduce the amount of pollution, resource scarcity, and overall damage to the environment can arguably be solved simply by redesigning the residential units within the region. By designing a new living unit …

Scalar Resiliency In The Age Of Disruption, Brandon Aultman May 2017

Scalar Resiliency In The Age Of Disruption, Brandon Aultman

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Natural storm surges and global sea level rise cause devastating effects, whether it’s leaving over a million of residents homeless or dooming an entire

coastline ecosystem with little to no hopes of recovery. Current responsive methods consist the issue of unequal priortization within coastal resiliency

design because of site scalar characteristics. A design that incorporates an equity of attention towards all elements of resiliency will lead to a responsive

solution that can transcend any scale of site. I will begin to analyze the elements of effective resiliency; adaptation, affordability, community, sustainability

and customization, in order to provide a balanced solution …
