The Impact Of Covid-19 Pandemic On The Evolution Of The Saudi House In Riyadh City, Khaled Alqahtani, Mohammad Alissan
The Impact Of Covid-19 Pandemic On The Evolution Of The Saudi House In Riyadh City, Khaled Alqahtani, Mohammad Alissan
Emirates Journal for Engineering Research
Over the past 100 years, the Saudi dwelling has undergone a series of transformations in its form, design, and function. These evolutions were the result of economic, regulatory, intellectual, and many other influences (Bahammam, 2018). During COVID-19 lockdown, people had to live a new lifestyle, practiced learning and working remotely, and had to stay longer hours at home and keep social distance apart. Daily prayers and outdoor leisure were only limited to the confines of the household. Residents had to consider preventive health precautions such as the use of sterilizing tools and allowing for natural ventilation and daylight.

Assessment Of Deep Façade Retrofit Solutions For Housing, Ming Hu
Assessment Of Deep Façade Retrofit Solutions For Housing, Ming Hu
Building Technology Educator's Society
Knowledge and research tying the environmental impact to operating energy efficiency improvement is a largely unexplored area in higher performance retrofit projects. It is a challenge to choose the façade renovation option that represents the optimal trade-offs among different performance objectives. This paper aims to test a multi-objective envelope optimization method to quantify and compare the deep retrofit façade techniques and their induced environmental impact. An integrated life cycle energy (LCE), life cycle assessment (LCA) and thermal comfort model (TCM) framework is proposed and used. Seven building façade retrofit options were studied to evaluate the operating energy saving, embodied energy …
Modding Suburbia - Guided Principles To Challenge The Established Social And Political Norms Of The American Midwestern Suburbs., Brenton Rahn
Theses from the M. Arch. Program
Responding to the unchallenged sprawl of suburban cities in the Midwest, the proposed principles seek to densify and further diversify the established social and political norms which currently still stagnate progress toward more autonomous neighborhoods. Through application of a specific set of principles that serve as guidelines, Modding Suburbia seeks to create dense, usable space from previously unused and forgotten interstitial areas hiding in the suburban landscape surrounding the socially and politically protected single-family home.
This project focuses on the transformation of the immediate context surrounding the single family home to promote density and diversification of housing and community. Through …
Engendering Houses: The Topological Conception Of Gender Pioneered By Stephen And Christine Hugh-Jones, Klaus Hamberger
Engendering Houses: The Topological Conception Of Gender Pioneered By Stephen And Christine Hugh-Jones, Klaus Hamberger
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
Stephen and Christine Hugh-Jones were the first anthropologists not only to demonstrate that the gender value of places and directions depends on the frame of reference and the point of view but to turn this insight into a fruitful principle on which to base transformational analysis. By analyzing the metamorphoses of gender brought about by changes of perspective or scale, they have brought to light the spatial character of the gender concept. As their examinations of Barasana architecture, ritual performance, and domestic work have shown, the relativity of gender is at its core an aspect of the relativity of space. …
Hacking Suburbia: An Architect's Reconsideration Of The Home, Lillian Candela
Hacking Suburbia: An Architect's Reconsideration Of The Home, Lillian Candela
Theses (Historic Preservation)
Beginning with the development of pattern books and their popularization in the 19th century, architects have struggled to determine their role in the homebuilding industry and contributing to a tension between architects, homebuilders and consumers. During the rise of pattern books, architects originally marketed themselves as ‘tastemakers’, but through the provision of patterns they became further circumscribed from the mass-produced housing market. Taste was no longer something that could be exclusively bought from an architect and in the last decade of the 20th century, mass-produced suburbs transitioned to being designed via online design tools offered by large homebuilder companies. Hacking …

Life As A House: A Manifesto For The New Iconic House, Ana Paola Hernandez Derbez, Domenica Velasco
Life As A House: A Manifesto For The New Iconic House, Ana Paola Hernandez Derbez, Domenica Velasco
Architecture Thesis Prep
The house, is one of the most fundamental architectural archetypes, has long been used as unbuilt or built manifestos to declare the avant garde of the discipline. As designers, we need to re-visualize design concepts to create architecture that integrates and corresponds to the way we dwell. Innovating design in the same way technology and digitalization have been innovating production and the way we live. This thesis investigates a return to the design of a house as a manifesto, focusing on today’s advanced modes of fabrication and evolving ways of living to challenge the current design mindset.
Hidden In Plain Sight: Tehran's Empowering Protean Spaces, Sara Khorshidifard
Hidden In Plain Sight: Tehran's Empowering Protean Spaces, Sara Khorshidifard
Sara Khorshidifard
As a recent citizen I noticed Tehran's urge for new kinds of public spaces. So, I initiated a dissertation that outlined a call for "protean space." Cities need protean spaces as a means to empower people, places that offer social interaction and support--spaces that are safe, accessible, and intriguing. Protean spaces empower people to create places for personal and interpersonal relationships, make social connections, gain information, and build trust across varied networks. My dissertation examined how planning and design practices can enhance the possibility of protean spaces and therefore increase their number. While my research concerns Tehran, all cities benefit …

Conformity Of House Physical Condition And Socio-Economic Mobility In Post Disaster Resettlement, Anggraeni Puspitaningtyas, Happy R. Santosa, V. Totok Noerwasito
Innovative Research Publications IRP India
Mudflow disaster damage job opportunity, disrupt social life and settlement, thus requiring resettlement. Need to understand whether physical condition of resettlement is in accordance with background and housing preference of victim, due to significant differences of housing design. Aspects studied were characteristic of resettlement, physical condition of house and socio-economic mobility. Research was done using qualitative method. Technique of data collection was used retrospective interviews and observation. This research result indicates that most participants experienced conformity in house physical condition and socioeconomic mobility. Reason of unconformity condition is housing facility which has not meet housing standard.
Affect Of Space: Nature Connectedness, Christian Lee
Affect Of Space: Nature Connectedness, Christian Lee
Architecture Senior Theses
This research will be mainly focused in promoting connectedness with nature through control of light. The “house” will be used as a connector in restoring the relationship. It is because the “house” is not just a shelter, but something more. It is the place where people, consciously and unconsciously, engages with one’s inner mind. It is not only “a machine for living in”, but also a connector linking between the inner world and nature. It is full of sensual quality which could mentally affect dwellers. However, the consequences of modernization are driving people’s focus away from material object of aesthetic …

Architecture Thesis Prep
Upon completion of my research I will design a system that allows the
flexibility needed by the people as well as the control the government
and NGO’s are responsible for providing. I will focus on the way playing
with the relevant scale can help to bridge the gap between indi
vidual
and group. Special configuration is a key component in forming
communal spaces. The integration of these spaces on every scale is
fundamental to achieving success. Issues of permanence can be addressed
though alternative building methodologies, and the lessons
learned from indigenous people.

[Excerpt] “As the Supreme Court recently confirmed in Quanta Computer, Inc. v. LG Electronics, Inc., patent and copyright owners have limited rights following voluntary transfers of protected goods. Moreover, as discussed at length by the Second Circuit in Platt & Munk Co. v. Republic Graphics, Inc., patent owners‟ rights have long been similarly affected by involuntary transfers. Platt & Munk finds the lack of equivalent copyright rulings remarkable, but does not allow lack of direct precedent to stand in the way of finding that involuntary transferees of copyright-protected goods have the same rights as voluntary transferees.
