In an effort to improve food literacy, food security, and food access, concerned

citizens have, over the course of the past several decades, developed new types

of landscapes for urban gleaning. While these design interventions vary in

scope and approach, they share a common fundamental desire: to invite others

to join in a harvest picked from the city. This paper addresses the broad context

Managers of many natural areas are facing challenges in maintaining greenways, given limited human and financial resources to deal with the vast areas of land that they manage. Volunteerism has increasingly been considered key to maintaining trails and other facilities. Organizations have sought ways to incorporate people into trail maintenance practices. For example, the Adirondack Mountain Club in New York provides various volunteer opportunities for members and non-members. Over 300 volunteers participated in the Adirondack Mountain Club’s supervised trail volunteer programs in 2013, providing 3,500 hours of labor. The thesis is a design project with the goal of transforming a decommissioned airfield at Kjeller in Norway to become part of the public green and social infrastructure in the municipality. The State of Rhode Island, the smallest of the fifty states in the United States, is 37 miles wide and 47 miles long, yet has 400 miles of coastline (CRMC, 2012). Twenty-one of its thirty-nine communities have coastal property. Like many coastal communities, this ocean state faces significant ecological, financial and safety issues due to climate change and sea level rise (CRMC, 2015a; Rodin, 2014). Various partnerships between local and federal government agencies and the private sector have arisen to help avert a disaster (Sasaki Associates, 2014).
