The Role Of The Greenways In The Harmonization Of Urban-Rural Relation In Hungary, Edina Dancsokné Fóris, Ágnes Sallay
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The decrease in the population of villages and the growth of cities is a global phenomenon, also present in Hungary. In inner peripheries, regions that most often lack cities, the ageing of the population and the emptying of the villages has begun. These regions are uniquely affected by regional development and rural development in terms of both economics and demographics. A significant step in creating cohesion between the advanced urban areas and the declining rural areas is the improvement of infrastructure (Csatári). We believe that greenways, as parts of the networks of infrastructure and green infrastructure, may play a significant …
Riverfront Planning Initiatives In Upstate New York: The Cases Of Kingston, Albany And Schenectady, Carlos Balsas
Riverfront Planning Initiatives In Upstate New York: The Cases Of Kingston, Albany And Schenectady, Carlos Balsas
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Waterfront locations have traditionally been perceived as possessing special qualities from real estate, urbanity and tourism perspectives. Many cities have developed on waterfronts and some of their most notable urban fabrics face waterbodies – rivers, canals, creeks, lakes or seas. Some small and mediumsized riverfront cities have been able to conserve or adapt their industrial era cultural heritage to new uses. In many cases, tourism has taken advantage of those locations for recreation, sports and community-oriented open-air events on the land-water interface (Bray, 1993; Kostopoulou, 2013). This paper provides a brief analysis of how three cities in upstate New York …

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Gorce are part of Carpathians – Western Beskidy, Mountains. They are located in Southern Poland, ca. 25km north of High Tatra Mountains. They stretch on approximately 550km². Gorce attract tourists with varying terrain and, most of all, some of the most beautiful open wide views of surrounding mountain chains. The relics of the original Carpathian Forest and the landscape of deeply cut mountain streams are also very valuable. Impressive rock outcroppings and not-yet-explored, numerous caves can also be found here.
The phenomenon of Gorce comes from the unique landscape, shaped by both nature and by man, originally for shepherding, then …
Landscape Education For Democracy: A Proposal For Building Inclusive Processes Into Spatial Planning Education, Kristin Faurest, Deni Ruggeri
Landscape Education For Democracy: A Proposal For Building Inclusive Processes Into Spatial Planning Education, Kristin Faurest, Deni Ruggeri
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The landscape belongs to everyone. We should all participate in deciding how it is used, and landscape resources should serve all populations regardless of social or economic status. But spatial planning education rarely includes topics such as democratic processes, participatory planning, community-based planning or other topics, and does not fully prepare designers and planners to effectively work in partnership with the communities they serve.
This problem was the inspiration for LED – Landscape Education for Democracy, a new three-year educational programme created and implemented by a consortium and funded by the Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership Programme of the European Commission. The …

Sustainable Urban Planning And Climate Change Scenarios: An Investigation Of Staten Island's Urban Planning, Melissa Wagner, Lauren E. Gentile, Joanna Merson, Elizabeth Wentz
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Recent events like Hurricane Sandy, which struck Staten Island, NY on October 29, 2012, serve as a costly reminder of how unsustainable designs and mounting social pressures can contribute to extensive structural damage and subsequent financial cost, from storm surge inundation and coastal flooding. It is unlikely that Hurricane Sandy was a one-time event but rather a warning of what can occur over the next century without proper mitigation strategies. Based on climate change projections, such extreme events are expected to become more frequent and intense due to warmer sea surface temperatures and rising sea levels (Emmanual, 2005; Kirtman et. …

Art In Parks: Seeing With Fresh Eyes, Charles L. Tracy
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
As the U.S. National Park Service (NPS) celebrates its centennial in 2016, it has been challenged anew to respond to changing demographics and to stay relevant to the changing needs of 21st century park visitors. How can parks, trails and other protected public spaces continue to serve as places of sanctuary and recreation while providing opportunities for reflecting on and even encouraging dialogue on issues that hold relevance to Americans? There is a growing realization within NPS and other federal land managing agencies of the need to be more proactive and creative in their community outreach and in addressing relevant …

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
This paper is written about a method of developing bicycle tourism and one day circular cycle routes between Budapest and Lake Balaton, between the two main tourist destinations in Hungary. There is a significant interest in that topic because of the 1364/2011. (XI. 8.) Governmental Decision about the need to develop bike routes, which says that the Budapest–Balaton path has the priority in governmental development. My study area is assigned by the proposed Budapest–Balaton cycle path of the National Spatial Plan (Országos Területrendezési Terv) and its surroundings which is enclosed by the boundaries of the settlements within 10 kilometers (6,2 …
Contemplative Greenway Design For The Health And Well-Being Of City Inhabitants, Agnieszka Olszewska
Contemplative Greenway Design For The Health And Well-Being Of City Inhabitants, Agnieszka Olszewska
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
This paper presents the findings of the PhD research titled Contemplative Values of Urban Parks and Gardens, which can be applied to urban greenway design. We consider the network of urban green spaces a multifunctional structure that can not only serve environmental and aesthetical values, but also directly influence people´s mental health and well-being. Urban green infrastructure has a significant potential to serve as a place for the passive recreation that involves re-connecting with nature through contemplation. We made the concept of contemplative landscapes operational by identifying physical attributes of such spaces.
The study revealed seven key-categories of landscape design …
Ecological Networks And Ecosystem Services In Urban Regions Implementation And Planning Practices, Mina Di Marino
Ecological Networks And Ecosystem Services In Urban Regions Implementation And Planning Practices, Mina Di Marino
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
In recent decades, urban developments, agriculture and growth of grey infrastructures have affected urban landscapes. The rapid expansions of cities have increasingly caused loss of biodiversity, degradation and fragmentation of habitats. In this context, Ecological Network (EN) and more recently Ecosystem Services (ES) have been the subject of increasing attention among academics and in global and European policies. EN has represented a concept to consider and plan for preserving biodiversity and sustainable use of resources. EN also provides ES, for instance, recreational services (such as the access to green space, recreation, and educational resources) and supporting services (such as safeguarding …

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The green infrastructure idea has getting more and more importance in the last years research papers and planning guidelines (Rouse & Bunster-Ossa, 2013) (EEA, 2011). According to one of the first definition green infrastructure (GI) is an interconnected network of waterways, wetlands, woodlands, wildlife habitats, and other natural areas, greenways, parks and other conservation lands, farms, ranches and forests, wilderness areas and other open spaces that support native species, maintain natural ecological processes, sustain air and water resources and contribute to the health and quality of life (Benedict & McMahon, 2000). According to the European Union’s approach green infrastructure is …
Historic Roads Of Asia Minor And Greenway Potential For Ankara, Nedim Kemer
Historic Roads Of Asia Minor And Greenway Potential For Ankara, Nedim Kemer
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Roads of the ancient era universally present valuable cultural and geographical assets on their courses. The routes of historic roads are generally determined by means of connecting settlements and important locations while providing safe, fast, and easy access through challenging geographies. Lush valleys and waterways with provision of food and water, scenic ridgelines, passageways through mountain ranges, and in some cases straight shortcuts in open plains are the usual access paths connecting cultural and economic terminal points. Critical geomorphologic, climatologic, and environmental factors play important role in determining the courses. Year round accessibility in climate dependent harsh conditions and anthropocentric …

Designation Of Potential Excavation Zones Suitable For Mining - Modelling Different Types Of Land Uses; Minatura2020 Hungarian Case Study (Tállya Region), Zoltán Horváth, Rita Szeiler, Anouk Cormont, Michiel Van Eupen
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The exploitation of minerals in Europe is an indispensable activity to ensure that the present and future needs of the European society can be met. This means that sufficient access is required to explore and exploit minerals. At the same time the mineral requirements of our society must be met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Accordingly, potentially exploitable mineral deposits (known deposits, abandoned mines and historical mining sites) need to be assessed against other land uses, taking into account criteria such as habitats, other environmental concerns, priorities for settlements, etc. Decisions on the …

The Tree Valuation Method As A Tool For Supporting Greenway Planning And Development. Case Study: Section Of Central Highway In Gliwice, Poland, Magdalena Błaszczyk, Marzena Suchocka
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Tree valuation is a tool determining proper and sustainable urban forest management. The valuation is also important for roads and highways planning, especially those functioning as greenways and greenbelts. In Poland, tree valuation is particularly important because of an intensive development of road network. In the last decade 2000 km of motorways and expressways and 1400 km of national roads were built. Rapid development, urban sprawl and autodependent housing in urban and suburban areas have been affecting the city of Gliwice. In general, urban development has taken precedence over land-use planning because natural capital and its ecosystem services in Poland …

The Role Of Culture In Greenway Planning: Focus On Islamic-Persian Garden Characteristics In The Uk And The Usa, Fatemeh Shahani, Julie Rudner
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
For more than a decade, planners have been concerned about green spaces to achieve sustainability in both environmental/ecological and cultural/social issues. Urban planning processes provide methods of consultation that incorporate community views to create complex built forms in urban environment for diverse cultures, needs and values. The use of multicultural ideas in planning or decision-making can change the nature of city life (Fincher, Iveson, Leitner, & Preston, 2014). In a multicultural society, greenways have great potential for providing a social and cultural network, which integrate people with diverse ethnics and perspectives when they are developed in partnership with different groups …

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The Atlanta BeltLine is a 22-mile transformative corridor project that will connect 45 neighborhoods through transit, open space and trails. As a repurposed series of abandoned railroad segments that run across the valleys and ridges of the Piedmont plateau region, the physical design of the corridor actively responds to both the physiographic and cultural diversity of its context. It is a comprehensive example of landscape infrastructure that will serve to organize, engage and guide future development in one of America’s fastest growing metropolitan areas (Figure 1).

The Historical Elements Of Kraków’S Green System - Protection Challenges For Landscape Planning In The 21st Century, Jadwiga Środulska-Wielgus, Anna Staniewska, Katarzyna Łakomy, Krzysztof Wielgus
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Krakow was referred by Ebenezer Howard as a natural garden city (Bogdanowski 1979). This flattering opinion emphasized the purposefulness of the green system – the result of evolutionary development of the city since the Middle Ages, supported by fortification and communication factors of the Second Industrial Revolution. Kraków of today, a many times greater size, has lost its harmony. On the one hand an uncontrollable growth, low availability of the significant of green (Staniewska 2014). On the other hand, both touristic and settlement attractiveness historical centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. Low degree of synergistic use of valuable …

Improving The Active Green Space Ratio In Coastal Cities In Turkey, Zerrin Sogut, Sibel Mansuroglu, Tanay Birisci, Ayse K. Onac
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
The active green space ratio in urban areas in Turkey has been determined as 10 m2 per capita in accordance with the Construction Law no. 3194. However, this ratio couldn’t be reached in most of the cities on the country scale in Turkey. This ratio of green space in urban areas per capita has been determined as 12,68 m2 for Izmir, and 11,52 m2 for Adana which are the two of the case cities of this study. One of the major factors that effect to reach this standard is the extension of the master plan boundaries. In spite of this, …
Engaging Green Infrastructure Scheme Into Watershed- And Urban-Based Planning And Design Realms, Serdar Selim, Adnan Kaplan
Engaging Green Infrastructure Scheme Into Watershed- And Urban-Based Planning And Design Realms, Serdar Selim, Adnan Kaplan
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Watershed planning realm has predominantly been posed by human/urbancentric planning practice solely based on socio-economic dynamics, rather than physical and ecological thresholds at regional level. Thus planning, conservation and management efforts in an individualistic way lack of elaborating natural and cultural landscapes in a holistic way and introducing a monolithic planning and management discourse. This inevitably results in a gap between large scale planning scheme and local plans and, consecutively conservation pursuits both in judicial and administrative spheres remained behind the reach of delivering a comprehensive (conservation) framework.
Based on the aforementioned problematic aspect, the hypothesis that this paper suggests …
Concrete Versus Green Corridors In Road Planning. Gdansk Case, Aleksandra Sas-Bojarska, Magdalena Rembeza
Concrete Versus Green Corridors In Road Planning. Gdansk Case, Aleksandra Sas-Bojarska, Magdalena Rembeza
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Urban structures are being increasingly cut by various technical barriers, in particular by the new or modernized roads connections. Their sizes are growing; accompanying infrastructure such as acoustic screens appear. This leads to the disadvantageous fragmentation of the urban tissue. Therefore urban landscape is being deformed. The separated parts of cities are becoming less accessible for residents. The functional, visual, environmental and social problems are growing and the need for solving them becomes essential. The presented article shows the threats and conflicts caused by new traffic systems forming concrete corridors. The possible mitigation methods such as the use of landscape …

Hybrid Green Corridors In Arid Northern Mexico: Design For A Balance Between Ecological And Non-Motorized Mobility Networks, Gabriel Díaz Montemayor
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Urban planning in Mexico has been going through intensive updating by the hand of the recently created Municipal Planning Institutes (IMPLANES). These institutes have emerged in the XXI century as a response to the inability to implement medium to long term planning efforts derived from an urban administration model determined by three year municipal government terms with no reelection as an option. Before the emergence of IMPLANES, decisions pertaining urban infrastructure were determined by mayors trying to leverage brief periods of time in the scale of urban administration and planning. IMPLANES have spent a significant part of their efforts updating …

Is Liverpool (Uk) Ready To Embrace Green Infirastructure And Greenway Practices? Rethinking The Funding, Management And Spatial Distribution Of City’S Greenspace Network In An Era Of Austerity., Ian C. Mell
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
Changes in government in 2010 placed additional economic pressures on the funding of urban greenspaces. These changes have led Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) to make difficult choices over what services they are legally required to provide. Potentially the biggest loser in this process has been the funding for greenspaces. Although many cities have felt the impacts of fiscal austerity, Liverpool has been one of the city’s hardest hit. As a consequence, Liverpool City Council (LCC) is being forced to make decisions over how it will maintain the city’s landscape post 2016/17. Partially this reflects the fragmented nature and historical distribution …
Cities Of The Future: Synergies Between Smart Energy And Greenways, Elizabeth Kocs
Cities Of The Future: Synergies Between Smart Energy And Greenways, Elizabeth Kocs
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
We are well on the way to becoming an urban world. According to the United Nations World Economic and Social Survey (UN, 2013), at least half the world’s population has been living in cities since 2007, a figure that is projected to rise to more than 70 percent by 2050. This poses unprecedented challenges in light of increasing pressures on world energy reserves, the uncertain and potentially devastating effects of climate change, other forms of environmental degradation, and a range of problems related to urban living such as overcrowding in city centers and sprawl in suburban areas and beyond.

Experimenting Regional River Pattern As Landscape Corridors In Urban Transformation, Adnan Kaplan
Experimenting Regional River Pattern As Landscape Corridors In Urban Transformation, Adnan Kaplan
Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning
It is widely acknowledged that today’s state-of-art cities are capable of acting as landscape systems within and beyond urban domain. In this context, river systems provide urban fabric with physical, ecological and social advocacy while addressing multiple challenges of rapid urbanization and its resultant effects such as dense and uncontrolled urban development.
Based on the aforementioned statement, this paper enunciates the attachment of regional river pattern (particularly composed of Meles Delta and Bornova Rivers, and their association with natural and urban patches) with centrally located, yet large tract of İzmir metropolitan city (Fig. 1).
