Improving The Active Green Space Ratio In Coastal Cities In Turkey, Zerrin Sogut, Sibel Mansuroglu, Tanay Birisci, Ayse K. Onac

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The active green space ratio in urban areas in Turkey has been determined as 10 m2 per capita in accordance with the Construction Law no. 3194. However, this ratio couldn’t be reached in most of the cities on the country scale in Turkey. This ratio of green space in urban areas per capita has been determined as 12,68 m2 for Izmir, and 11,52 m2 for Adana which are the two of the case cities of this study. One of the major factors that effect to reach this standard is the extension of the master plan boundaries. In spite of this, …

Revitalizing Urban Waterways: Streams Of Environmental Justice, Richard Smardon, Sharon Moran Jan 2016

Revitalizing Urban Waterways: Streams Of Environmental Justice, Richard Smardon, Sharon Moran

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

This paper explores how a specific project (creek restoration planning) in a particular place (Syracuse, NY) challenged its proponents to identify best practices for community outreach. Within this watershed, several kinds of social and biophysical problems converged with two environmental justice (EJ) challenges, making for a complex project. We will review how the project proponents planned the project, especially the public participation, in the context of minimal guidance in terms of agreed-upon best practices, and the EJ issues. The outline the project’s impacts, arguing that the highly interactive, process-intensive approach that the proponents adapted was in part, necessitated by the …

The Historical Elements Of Kraków’S Green System - Protection Challenges For Landscape Planning In The 21st Century, Jadwiga Środulska-Wielgus, Anna Staniewska, Katarzyna Łakomy, Krzysztof Wielgus Jan 2016

The Historical Elements Of Kraków’S Green System - Protection Challenges For Landscape Planning In The 21st Century, Jadwiga Środulska-Wielgus, Anna Staniewska, Katarzyna Łakomy, Krzysztof Wielgus

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Krakow was referred by Ebenezer Howard as a natural garden city (Bogdanowski 1979). This flattering opinion emphasized the purposefulness of the green system – the result of evolutionary development of the city since the Middle Ages, supported by fortification and communication factors of the Second Industrial Revolution. Kraków of today, a many times greater size, has lost its harmony. On the one hand an uncontrollable growth, low availability of the significant of green (Staniewska 2014). On the other hand, both touristic and settlement attractiveness historical centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. Low degree of synergistic use of valuable …

Rejuvenation Of A Once Beautiful Greenway: Beijing Tongzhou Grand Canal, Yanhong Tang, Yuezhong Chen Jan 2016

Rejuvenation Of A Once Beautiful Greenway: Beijing Tongzhou Grand Canal, Yanhong Tang, Yuezhong Chen

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Many years ago, the Beijing Tongzhou Grand Canal was the northern destination point of the journey along the Jing-Hang Grand Canal in China. It once operated as a shipping gateway through the country to Beijing y, and was a historicly significant greenway of China. Now, the Grand Canal is an important urban district for modern Beijing and requires greater attention to strategic planning. Our design team was hired by the municipal park department to produce a new master plan for a total area of 120 hectares along the waterway which had fallen into decay through the compounding consequences of a …

Greenways To Health: The Links Between Access To Green Space And Healthy Communities, Catharine Ward Thompson Jan 2016

Greenways To Health: The Links Between Access To Green Space And Healthy Communities, Catharine Ward Thompson

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The European Landscape Convention stresses the significance of “everyday” landscapes in which people live and go about their daily activities; it identifies such landscapes as important for people’s quality of life, their wellbeing and their individual and cultural identity (Council of Europe, 2000, pp 8-11, 23). As we reach the point, globally, where more people live in towns and cities than in rural locations, new questions are being raised about how well such environments serve as human habitat. There is a new impetus to interest in links between environment, health and quality of life, and greenways and green spaces have …

Green Infrastructure In Growing Station Towns. Two Case Studies From Norway, Kine Halvorsen Thorén, Inger-Lise Saglie Jan 2016

Green Infrastructure In Growing Station Towns. Two Case Studies From Norway, Kine Halvorsen Thorén, Inger-Lise Saglie

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Experiences from the past 25 years have shown that there are some major conflicts between the densification policy that has been predominant in Norway and the desire to preserve urban green spaces. Auditor General expressed e.g. 2007, concern for downsizing of urban nature. According to Statistics Norway, the proportion of the population with acceptable access to recreational areas has dropped by 3% in the period 1999- 2009. Today, also smaller municipalities in metropolitan regions in our country are growing in population and some are pointed out as centers for growth in regional plans. Thus, there is also a huge pressure …

Spreading Of Invasive Species In Greenways: A Gis-Based Case Study In Hungary, Peter Szilassi, Dorottya Kitka Jan 2016

Spreading Of Invasive Species In Greenways: A Gis-Based Case Study In Hungary, Peter Szilassi, Dorottya Kitka

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The fast spread of invasive species is leading to a reduction in biodiversity and habitat loss for native species. It is especially important to consider the environmental aspects during greenway planning. Ecological corridors are designed to assure the migration of species between the valuable conservation areas and to reduce the spreading ability of invasive species.

This paper analyses the proportion invasive species on the greenways (ecological corridors) of the Southern Hungarian Great Plain NUTS 2 statistical region, in Hungary. The spreading conditions and dynamics of invasive species were compared inside and outside greenways. The study aims to define the ecological …

Highway Transformation As An Opportunity For Landscape Restoration In The Netherlands, Mascha M. Visser Jan 2016

Highway Transformation As An Opportunity For Landscape Restoration In The Netherlands, Mascha M. Visser

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The traffic and waterways infrastructure of the Netherlands dates mostly from the middle part of the 20th century. At this time the primary focus was, as in many countries, on facilitating transport. As a consequence, many historical agricultural landscapes were subject to fragmentation, which also reduced their ecological value. During the last 20 years, more attention has been given to the mitigation of the negative effects caused by linear infrastructure. Regulation has helped stimulate this, although regulations for landscape development were, and still are, less strict than those affecting nature.

This overview covers 20 years of landscape planning in relation …

Landscape Indicators In Rural Development, István Valánszki, Ágnes Sallay, Krisztina Filep-Kovács, Sándor Jombach Jan 2016

Landscape Indicators In Rural Development, István Valánszki, Ágnes Sallay, Krisztina Filep-Kovács, Sándor Jombach

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Landscape values and landscape potential are the base of rural development. Long-term and balanced utilization of these is possible through sustainable landscape management. The Hungarian rural regions have very diverse characteristics, that is why properly targeted and specified programs, strategies are needed to develop them in an appropriate way.

Several planners, researchers and authors emphasized that the first step of sustainable landscape management is landscape-function analysis (De Groot et al., 2010; Herman et al., 2014). Before clustering and typification of rural regions based on the levels of the different landscape functions, it is very important to explore the potential relationships, …

Landscape Planning And Green Infrastructure In Serbia: From National To Belgrade City Planning, Nevena Vasiljević, Boris Radić, Biljana Šljukić, Ratko Ristić Jan 2016

Landscape Planning And Green Infrastructure In Serbia: From National To Belgrade City Planning, Nevena Vasiljević, Boris Radić, Biljana Šljukić, Ratko Ristić

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The development of landscape planning in Serbia began in the middle of the last century. The principles and objectives of landscape planning were modeled on European trends and developed within the academic framework of the School of landscape architecture at the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade.

The General Plan of Landscapes (1995) was a failed attempt to "introduce" landscape planning from the framework of academic and scientific debate to institutional spatial planning in Serbia (Vasiljević, 2008). After the ratification of the European Landscape Convention in 2011, a more favorable climate for landscape planning was created in Serbia. …

The Role Of Green Urban Wastelands In 3rd Place Creation. Challenge For Urban Policy In Poland, Anna Wilczyńska, Maciej Łepkowski, Ryszard Nejman Jan 2016

The Role Of Green Urban Wastelands In 3rd Place Creation. Challenge For Urban Policy In Poland, Anna Wilczyńska, Maciej Łepkowski, Ryszard Nejman

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

An Urban area is a complex system that constantly changes, forms dynamically and functionsindependently. Despite of huge development pressure coming from the fast urban growth there are still many neglected areas or so-called urban wastelands. These zones seem to be commonly considered (also by local governments and city planners) as worthless and unproductive critical spaces that need to be invested in and returned to the city. On the other hand, we ahould point out a growing conviction among scientists about the importance of wastelands in context of their strong impact on the urban ecosystem and some social aspects of urban …

Implementing The Vision: The Atlanta Beltline Corridor, Georgia, Usa, Valdis D. Zusmanis, Leonardo Alvarez, Micah Lipscomb, Ryan Gravel

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The Atlanta BeltLine is a 22-mile transformative corridor project that will connect 45 neighborhoods through transit, open space and trails. As a repurposed series of abandoned railroad segments that run across the valleys and ridges of the Piedmont plateau region, the physical design of the corridor actively responds to both the physiographic and cultural diversity of its context. It is a comprehensive example of landscape infrastructure that will serve to organize, engage and guide future development in one of America’s fastest growing metropolitan areas (Figure 1).

The Agia Sofia’S Axis. A Corridor Of Change And Resilience For Thessaloniki, Maria Ananiadou-Tzimopoulou, Sofia Tzimopoulou, Panagiota Mouratidou

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

The paper dwells on greenways as natural and cultural corridors, and their value for the contemporary city change and resilience. Just after a short theoretical approach on urban landscape architecture related to the sustainability and urban resilience, we intend to present our project that won the second prize in the Panhellenic competition, organized by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, for the redesign of Agia Sofia’ s axis, one of the main historical traces of Thessaloniki’ s urban landscape. This example supports our design approach, socio-ecological and perceptual, for landscape architectural projects, in both planning and design.

Designing The Network Of Ecological Corridors Among Organic Farms In South Bačka District Of Vojvodina Province, Brankica Babec, Srđan Šeremešić, Ljiljana Nikolić, Ksenija Hiel Jan 2016

Designing The Network Of Ecological Corridors Among Organic Farms In South Bačka District Of Vojvodina Province, Brankica Babec, Srđan Šeremešić, Ljiljana Nikolić, Ksenija Hiel

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

In the predominant agricultural area such as Vojvodina Province the main threat to biodiversity is the fragmentation of nature habitats. Biodiversity decline started with the large scale clearing of forest and wetlands and expansion of the agricultural. Recent biodiversity deterioration is linked with the intensive management used in conventional agriculture. Protected areas, as main source of biodiversity, covers approximately 5,5% of total of 2.150.600ha land in Vojvodina Province that is considered as insufficient for species expansion. Under the artificial cropping systems cultivated and weed species suppress native vegetation and inhibit its proliferation.

Sufficient number of terms are associated with eco …

The Tree Valuation Method As A Tool For Supporting Greenway Planning And Development. Case Study: Section Of Central Highway In Gliwice, Poland, Magdalena Błaszczyk, Marzena Suchocka Jan 2016

The Tree Valuation Method As A Tool For Supporting Greenway Planning And Development. Case Study: Section Of Central Highway In Gliwice, Poland, Magdalena Błaszczyk, Marzena Suchocka

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Tree valuation is a tool determining proper and sustainable urban forest management. The valuation is also important for roads and highways planning, especially those functioning as greenways and greenbelts. In Poland, tree valuation is particularly important because of an intensive development of road network. In the last decade 2000 km of motorways and expressways and 1400 km of national roads were built. Rapid development, urban sprawl and autodependent housing in urban and suburban areas have been affecting the city of Gliwice. In general, urban development has taken precedence over land-use planning because natural capital and its ecosystem services in Poland …

The “Trame Verte Et Bleue” French Policy: What Territorial Coherence Does It Offer?, Julie Chaurand, Jean-Philippe Tonneau, Jacques Baudry

Proceedings of the Fábos Conference on Landscape and Greenway Planning

Can the territorial coherence concept facilitate the implementation and the assessment of the French public policy called “Trame verte et bleue” (TVB)?

Coherence is inherent to TVB and is expressly noted in French law. The TVB policy has to be coherent at different territorial levels, from national to local and between adjacent territories. Policy goals linked to landscape ecology concepts have to provide synergies with other territory goals: economic activity, housing, tourism...

How can TVB project coherence be supported? In our work, we rely on the territorial coherence concept which we believe, has yet to be studied in the inter-scale …
