The spatial trends in wilderness character in Adams County, Pennsylvania were examined to evaluate how influenced specific areas are impacted by human activity and development. Indicators of wilderness character were selected as natural, untrammelled, undeveloped, along with solitude and unconfined recreation by the Death Valley National Park staff in which a 0-4 ranking system was based upon to portray a range of most degraded to optimal land. Anthropogenic alterations of hydro geomorphological conditions of the Rio Grande River have changed the processes that have created the mosaic of riparian habitats valuable for ecosystem functioning, wildlife, and enjoyment by residents. These changes have created conditions that have increased the frequency of historically unprecedented disturbances such as fire and aggressive invasion of exotic species. In both the Geographic Information (Geo) and Building Information Modelling (BIM) domains, it is widely acknowledged that the integration of data from both domains is beneficial and a crucial step in facing the multi-disciplinary challenges of our built environment. The creation of digital 3D models for cultural heritage is commonplace. With the advent of efficient and cost effective technologies archaeologists are making a plethora of digital assets. This paper evaluates the identity of 3D digital assets and explores how to enhance or expand that identity by integrating photogrammetric models into VR. We propose that when a digital object acquires spatial context from its virtual surroundings, it gains an identity in relation to that virtual space, the same way that embedding the object with metadata gives it a specific identity through its relationship to other information. The John Moulton homestead, constructed in 1938, is one of four intact homesteads in the Mormon Row Historic District within Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The homestead is a vernacular, two story wood frame structure finished with pink-painted cementitious stucco. The National Park Service (NPS) has passively preserved the structure since 1990 and it still maintains a high degree of integrity. In response to the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority’s Lower 9th Ward Development Initiative Request for Proposals, Habitat for Humanity (HFH), Inc. was awarded 48 vacant lots to construct single and two-family homes in the Lower 9th Ward. I provided a scope of services for HFH which included: converting the property data provided by HFH into a GIS-ready format (cleaning of data), converting the data into vector features in GIS, and creating maps displaying reported vacant lots within the neighborhood boundaries. These maps continue to support the organization as they move forward with their community outreach endeavors.

Architectural reconstructions are the centerpieces of ancient landscape visualization. When present, vegetation is relegated to the background, resulting in underutilized plant data—an integral data source for archaeological interpretation—thus limiting the capacity to take advantage of 3D visualization for studying ancient socio-environmental dynamics. This dissertation evaluates the effects of relaxing the growth management tool known as the greenbelt policy in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) of South Korea. The policy effect is measured by employing a series of spatial and statistical analyses on four urban sprawl measurement criteria: 1) physical containment, 2) housing affordability, 3) community service provision costs, and 4) commuting costs. Based on the analyses, I concluded that as a result of the greenbelt relaxation, the SMA has lost substantial amounts of farmland, forestland, pastureland, and wetlands to development between 1990 and 2010. It is always challenging for decision makers to prioritize wetland conservation programs at the landscape scale. This study employed a GIS-based multi-criteria spatial decision support tool that identified locations with the highest restoration potential for wetland conservation programs in the Rainwater Basin in south-central Nebraska. Five indicators were considered to assess wetland restoration potential: (1) Vegetation characteristics; (2) Soil characteristics; (3) Water volume released from hydrological modification of agricultural irrigation pits; (4) Topographical depression status; and (5) Habitat condition. In this article, I employ least cost paths using GIS to measure the relationship between site configuration and social connectivity at the ancient Maya site of Copan, Honduras. I investigate two questions. First, did people of different social classes experience varying degrees of social connectivity? Second, did people living in different parts of the city experience difference degrees of social connectivity? Ultimately, the goal is modify traditional configurational analysis using least cost analysis (LCA) to identify how social hierarchy was embedded in landscapes and how ancient people may have strategically manipulated landscapes to structure social interaction and community organization.
