Architecture In Anime: Miyazaki's Motifs, Jack Collins
Architecture In Anime: Miyazaki's Motifs, Jack Collins
Honors Projects
Internationally known, celebrated, and respected, director Hayao Miyazaki has become a household name by transforming an industry through his films. This research focuses on Miyazaki’s process and the similarities he shares with architects, both in and out of his works. By initially examining his background, the three motifs of architecture, inspiration, and sustainability are explored through works like Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and more. The results of this research are to inform fans of both architecture and anime about the connection between someone who designs and builds the world, and one who designs and builds …
Challenging The Pattern, Gary Thurston
Challenging The Pattern, Gary Thurston
Architecture Thesis Prep
Christopher Alexander and Yona Friedman suggest the architect is necessarily limited in his or her ability to construct the built environment for all people, or should be limited in favor of participation of the non-architect. While I agree that all parties of the world should take part in design and construction, I assert that architects through their training are better equipped to design and construct our built environment and in this sense, I am directly challenging the claims made by Alexander, et al.

ABSTRACT
THROUGH THESE GATES: Buffalo’s First African American Architect
John Edmonston Brent
The purpose of this research is to reintroduce the architectural and historic cultural contributions that John Edmonston Brent (1889-1962) made to the city of Buffalo, Western New York and beyond. A significant number of renderings, artifacts and photos from Mr. Brent’s forty-seven year architectural career were unearthed. This cache of rediscovered forgotten contributions made by John Brent would align him with other African American architectural pioneers during the mid-20th century.
John Brent was educated by the first class of professionally educated and trained African American architects of …

The Role Of The Contract Administrator Under The Principal Irish Standard Forms Of Building Contract, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
Construction contract administration concerns the effective execution of construction contracts. The primary objectives of the individual appointed to administer a building contract typically include delivering the project safely, to the specified quality standards, on time, and within the employer’s budgetary constraints. The administrator’s task is to orchestrate and motivate the various designers and constructors to deliver the best possible performance both individually and as members of the team. This study has investigates the contribution made by the contract administrator in administering construction projects and outlines the decision-making, advisory and information roles undertaken by the contract administrator in the context of …

UCARE Research Products
Architecture In The Humanities is an online database through University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s website. It strives to connect architecture to works of literature, film, theatre and art either through a historical or fictional event that is portrayed as having taken place in or around the architecture. Every year a UCARE student picks an area of interest to research. This year I have chosen to focus on modern architecture specifically designed by Irish architects or Irish architecture firms.
Reconsidering The User, Nathan M. Aleskovsky
Reconsidering The User, Nathan M. Aleskovsky
Architecture Senior Theses
My thesis, Reconsidering The User, is a proposal for a digital application that unites the architect and the occupant in the design process of a home by transforming how design criteria are obtained and controlled.
Within the scope of the detached single-family house, my thesis argues that a design process that engages the expertise of both the architect and the occupant has the potential to create a design solution that is more accurately tailored to the preferences of the occupant. This is possible through reconfiguring the information phase of architectural design. Given my background and current entrepreneurial pursuit, best way …

Hidden in Plain Sight Projects
On November 16th, 1926 George Croll Baum died. In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania the local newspaper covered his death. The Gettysburgian, the paper for Gettysburg College reported that Henry W.A. Hanson, the college president, was “deeply distressed and further noted that Baum's death 'touched the hearts of all that knew him with deep regret.'" Within a month Dr. Hanson had already ordered three memorial plaques to be placed on the campus. Baum's family tried to help pay for them. Hanson refused the money. In a correspondence with Baum‟s brother about the plaques, Hanson told him, “What I did for your brother …
