The Impact Of Building Form On Energy Consumption In New School Models Of Abu Dhabi, Meriem Rahmani
The Impact Of Building Form On Energy Consumption In New School Models Of Abu Dhabi, Meriem Rahmani
Architectural Engineering Theses
The high rates of energy consumption by schools are mainly caused by inappropriate designs of architectural forms and limited access to free energy resources that can be provided by natural lighting and ventilation. Optimizing the architectural form with regards to its geometry, aspect ratio, spatial height to depth proportion, form direction, spacing between building masses can help to improve connection to the outdoor environment including daylight, air and outdoor greenery. The optimized form can help not only to save energy but also to create educational environments that are more lively and cheerful; and hence improve students’ performance, health and attitude. …

Educational Buildings In Albania: Typologies Based On Morphological Developmen, Ledita Mezini, Ani Tola
UBT International Conference
There are about 3400 school buildings in Albania and constantly new schools are being renovated and built. It is widely known that the educational sector and the built environment contributes to the achievements of learning and teaching, and causes many effects in the learning process. The importance of the educational infrastructures, is the main purpose of this study, which tries to categorize the typologies, morphology, and space distribution of schools, designed in the years 1945-1990. This period corresponds to the largest number of school’s constructions of ‘type models’ in Albania. The study is focused on the analysis of 150 different …

Shifting School Design To The 21st Century: Challenges With Alternative Learning Environments, Bryan H. Perez
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
There is a need for major change in our educational system and in particular the design of schools. Our existing school model was defined in the mid- to late-1800s, as a response to the Industrial Revolution, and does not reflect the needs of the next generation of 21st century students. One of the key elements of change in schools is the shift from confined classrooms towards alternative learning environments – spaces that are designed for a specific learning type or activity.
This thesis focuses on secondary education and examines three schools identified as having innovative school designs. While all three …
